Chris offers a peek inside the mind and world of hackers - people who like to tinker, usually for public benefit. Want to feel more secure? Know what it takes to hack your cell phone? Remember to face the world as a child does - with with the wonder of a child discovering a new thing for the first time.
Chris Nickerson is a professional attacker - a security specialist, he helps corporations and individuals to handle the challenges of physical and digital intrusion. A longtime part of hacker conferences DEFCON, 2600, and others, Chris is currently the CEO of Lares Consulting.

If only this kind of thing wasn't discouraged. I'm a 15yo in school and I've found three bugs in the computer system that allow full administrator access, one that allows you to see any file on any computer IN THE ENTIRE COUNTRY, and I tell the IT department and what happens? I get in trouble, nothing gets fixed.

Tech Enthusiasts: Everything in my house is wired to the internet. I can control every part of my home from my smartphone! My smart house is Bluetooth enabled and i can talk to Alexa from anywhere in the house! Wow, the world is great! Engineer/Programmer: the newest piece of technology in my home is a 2004 printer and i keep a loaded gun on me at all times in case it makes a noise I wasn't expecting.

I've seen a guy giving a talk at a security conference on how he has his whole home office wired for automation (mostly through Alexa), so that it says "Good Morning" to everyone in the room by checking which phones are on the wifi, and when he says "Red Alert" it turns all the lights red and plays a siren. He's just aware that it all could be compromised. For example, the tesla coil has a physical switch in addition to the one Alexa controls, because it could be dangerous so he needs to be sure it is turned off. The engineer/programmer/hacker doesn't refuse to carry a smartphone, he just knows to turn off the wifi when he isn't using it so it isn't constantly broadcasting the names of networks it regularly connects to, for example.

Thanks for the talk. This made me think. Secrets and hoarding. This is what you get. Racketeering until your devices will be too slow to use. Endless vulberability hackers and security patches and obsolete devices. Consumerism in its prime. It's cool ....just give my new toys. Because pollution isn't even real society isn't a thing anymore. Keep each other busy so we don't really need to deal with each others trust issues.

Be more careful, remember that everything is hackable in some way. Don't trust computers and don't trust organizations - they all are designed by humans and all have vulnerabilities. Nothing is perfect, nothing is safe, go live in a cave and destroy the entrance to make it very hard to find from above and maybe, just maybe, no one will find you and extract your secrets from you before you die. And of course no internet, no computers, no external power, food and water supply - only stuff you can securely provide to yourself. If you can trust yourself, of course, which I doubt. If not - that means that even stuff you provide yourself is not fully secure. The only way to be absolutely secure is to die right now, immediately, so even if you will be hacked, you won't care anymore. What else you want to hear from them? There's no silver bullet.
