Andrew Hessel designs synthetic viruses and uses the latest 3D printing technology to create medicine that is designed individually for a single patient. The promise here is that once he succeeds to design a synthetic virus that is able to penetrate the medicine throughout the body of the patient, he can scale the solution and present the world an almost free and much more capable medicine against cancer.

I only comment on KZfaq few times since using internet, and I'm in my mid-20s. But I have to comment now to point out that this got to be the most interesting and most important TEDTalk video, ever.

i also had this idea a few years ago (like, a decade after craig venter et al, of course, lol) but he is not really mentioning the missing link; the difficult bit that makes this technology hard to pull off: knowing what to print. he makes it sound easy, but science/genetics has a long way to go and he downplays this. there are similar strategies involving synthetic antibodies, but in both cases, antibodies, viruses or otherwise, we're not quite at the stage of being able to manipulate DNA and the host cell used for protein expression well enough to perfectly code for the necessary protein shape. there are so many complexities involving protein folding, post-translational modification, getting the chosen particle into a state that can be harvested correctly. not everything can be made in bacteria, let alone a single strain of E coli. Of course the speaker knows this, is aware of the problems and presumably expects other technologies to come in and solve some of these problems as time goes by and that as those barriers fall, this dream (and his company) will take steps towards becoming reality, but we have a long way to go to cover all he is promising and he does not address this at all coz it's a TED talk and it's supposed to sound like the greatest thing ever. i would argue that bacteriophage therapies will come first as an alternative to antibiotics, then proper availability of oncolytic viruses may come later, followed by antibodies and eventually the imagination is the limit (both for better and for worse).

@@medichain I haven't heard of any major breakthroughs. This guy is still pedlling the same talk. What he is suggesting requires the confluence of many different fields of molecular/synthetic biology.

The greatest fear I have with this is ambition overtaking caution when developing new treatments. The idea for the wifi-capable DNA synthesizer in a pen is a perfect example, just imagine malware being put out there for the things & sick people inject themselves with them. Nothing is a magical pill and Murphy's Law should always be considered when coming up with new designs. You can't just "Go back to the design table" as Hessel called it if there are several bodies left in your wake.

Yes, easy. But a handy molecular biologist could already do that today with current bio technology.

I'm a sophmore undergrad in cell & mollecular biology. I am currently doing research genetically engineering viruses (in my case human Cytomegalovirus virus). We are knocking out genes in the virus and infecting cells in order to identify which genes are most critical to virulence for targeted therapies. This virus kills 60k people per year. So yeah, it's pretty easy, but I promise I want to help people not kill them.
