This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Enjoy a series of short performances and stories from Robert Cazimero, legendary and award-winning Hawaiian singer, songwriter, pianist, kumu hula and contributor to the Hawaiian cultural renaissance. Featuring hula dancers Alaka‘i Christopher Lastimado and Hinaleimoana Wong-Kalu.
Legendary and award-winning Hawaiian singer, songwriter, pianist, kumu hula and contributor to the Hawaiian cultural renaissance.
Coming of age in the 1970s was a turbulent time, but for Robert Cazimero, it was the time when he discovered himself and his life’s purpose: Hawaiian music and the art of hula. While it was not without turbulence, Robert’s path became clear and he followed it to where he is today-at the top of his game in his music and the art of hula.
Robert’s musical talent was recognized at a young age by his kumu hula (hula teacher), Ma‘iki Aiu Lake, and he soon began to learn the art of hula from one of the most respected masters of the dance form during the Hawaiian cultural renaissance.
Known for changing the familiar sound of Hawaiian music, Ma‘iki infused Robert with her vision of an all-male halau (hula school). Over the ensuing decades, he has realized Ma‘iki’s dream again and again, dedicating his energy to the once-vanishing tradition of male hula.
Robert’s elegant voice is so distinctive, that when he performs solo on piano (or with his brother Roland as the Brothers Cazimero), people are compelled to listen. During his musical journey, he has contributed to 40 full album projects, many of which are considered classics in the history of Hawaiian music.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

absolutely wonderful. So very true and I'm grateful to be able to have had the opportunity to hear your story. The very first time I heard you, I was mesmerized by your unique, soothing voice. At one very bad time in my life, you were with me in spirit. I would put my headphones on and became part of your peaceful, healing world. I feel very deeply that you pulled me out of the darkness and saved me and for that I give you my mahalo and aloha. You are the culture, the islands, the people.......passing that along to our younger generations in teachings is truly gracious. Your teachings will pass through many generations. I hope they realize how important that is...............

I can only imagine what it would be like to have so much creative energy and talent . I dont believe there is one quite like you that can take a Mele and breathe such life into each. As a Dancer , as so many do selecting one of Your Seasoned Signature pieces I would become lost in the rapture of the lyrics, the leo, the ha. E kala mai , I've always wanted to Express how you moved me the moment the Mele begins. Mahalo nui nui . Dear Exquisetly Talented Sir.

Can someone put English subtitles to all the Hawaiian lines? Otherwise, it really means nothing but GIBBERISH to non-Hawaiian language speakers. Too bad it's a beautiful language but means nothing to the non-speakers.
