What do whales have to do with pollution? How is pouring DDT down your sink connected to pollution in the ocean and in your body? In this talk from TEDxBeaconStreet Roger Payne, the co-discoverer of the whale song and MacArthur genius award winner, tells how pollution transfers through mammals, from generation to generation. Having led over 100 expeditions to every ocean and studied every species of large whale in the wild, Payne tells us that pollution is the biggest problem faced by whales. With more than one billion people depending on seafood as their primary source of animal protein, it's very much our problem too. Do you consider yourself an apex predator? You may after hearing this talk.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Only 225 likes at this time. Please understand that this is the most important message you will ever hear about how you can positively affect your plant. We are all on the same earth and you know what, most of the humans right now are self righteous and uninspired and it is every individuals own fault for leading an uneventful life. Change the world while we still can. If you don’t try then you are part of the problem. Please be encouraged by this

I clicked on this to hear the man talk who brought whale song to us. I was hoping to hear him talk about what a lovely species whales are and what emotional encounters he has had with them. What I got is somewhat more than I bargained for - but which is going to be food for thought! He took me on a rollercoaster tour from whale song to pollution, to oil companies and finally to politics. I feel winded now. I wanted to hear whale song (which I did), but now I am not sure I will be able to enjoy my dinner or look at "my kids" the same way (I work with toddlers). I feel wide-eyed aware of my environment right now. It's creepy.

"Think of it this way: Because the stakes are now now so high - higher than they have ever been - our present predicament is, actually, the most singular opportunity for greatness ever offered to any generation in any civilization. If we seize that opportunity, our descendants will judge us the most far-seeing and generous of ancestors." -- Roger Payne

So pleased to see that Roger Payne is till active and in good health. He's done so ,much to help to protect these beautiful creatures. The idea of killing them for any reason is beyond my understanding and is unforgivably irresponsible as well as cruel. The fact is that they are of vital importance to the planet and the oceanic ecosystem. Its an irresponsible and wicked minority that kill whales but all of us will pay a price for it.

Has a musician ever taken the notes of the song of a whale and made it into human music? Also DDT- Silent Spring by Rachel Carson. Silent Spring was first publised in the early 1960's and it forewarned and is well worth reading now.

Someone should write a whale song and play it to whales. It would probably be complete gibberish to them but it would nonetheless still be interesting to gauge their reaction.

See the recent book, ‘How to Speak Whale’ by Tom Mustill. I read it last weekend. It is fantastic. Roger is mentioned a number of times. He is still involved.

Interesting, and whales don't die of cancer. When we be able to communicate with whales in the future we will have a lot to learn. In my observation until we learn how to listen in a 3 democracy
