The Conductor of the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra talks about the importance of silence - in music, as well as in our lives.
Neal Gittleman has been a professional conductor for 35 years. This is his 23rd season as conductor of the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra. His passion is music and bringing that music to life through history as well as sound. For decades, he has been talking to his concert audiences to give greater understanding of the music he loves. Speaking in front of an audience at TEDxDayton, however, is a first for Neal! Hopefully, the music will carry him along. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

WHEN TO BE SILENT 1. Be silent - in the heat of anger. 2. Be silent - when you don't have all the facts. 3. Be silent - when you haven't verified the story. 4. Be silent - if your words will offend a weaker person. 5. Be silent - when it is time to listen. 6. Be silent - when you are tempted to make light of holy things. 7. Be silent - when you are tempted to joke about sin. 8. Be silent - if you would be ashamed of your words later. 9. Be silent - if your words would convey the wrong impression. 10. Be silent - if the issue is none of your business. 11. Be silent - when you are tempted to tell an outright lie. 12. Be silent - if your words will damage someone else's reputation. 13. Be silent - if your words will damage a friendship. 14. Be silent - when you are feeling critical. 15. Be silent - if you can't say it without screaming. 16. Be silent - if your words will be a poor reflection of your friends and family. 17. Be silent - if you may have to eat your words later. 18. Be silent - if you have already said it more than one time. 19. Be silent - when you are tempted to flatter a wicked person. 20. Be silent - when you are supposed to be working instead. *"WHOEVER GUARDS HIS MOUTH AND TONGUE KEEPS HIM SELF OFF TROUBLE Get more on my channel

Every generation is becoming more talkative. My grandparents were more silent than my parents. My parents are more silent than me. I am more silent than my kids. My kids are non-stop talkative. We are losing the power of silence. People who live in the villages and rural areas are more silent than those who live in towns.

Ramana responded: “Contact with them is good. They will work through silence. By speaking, their power is reduced. Silence is most powerful. Speech is always less powerful than silence. So mental contact is the best.” Silence is the Eternal Stream of Speech In “Talks” many quotes of the Maharshi can be found, which make clear, that silence is the actual, direct and eternal speech, which flows heart to heart. “Silence is ever-speaking; it is a perennial flow of language; it is interrupted by speaking. These words obstruct that mute language. There is electricity flowing in a wire. With resistance to its passage, it glows as a lamp or revolves as a fan. In the wire it remains as electric energy. Similarly also, silence is the eternal flow of language, obstructed by words. What one fails to know by conversation extending to several years can be known in a trice in Silence, or in front of Silence - e.g., Dakshinamurti, and his four disciples. That is the highest and most effective language.” ) -- Miss Margaret Woodrow Wilson, daughter of the late President, told this correspondent today that she was happier than ever before and did not want to return to the United States. For four years she had been a sadhak or follower of Sri Aurobindo, India's most prominent mystic, in his asram here.

“True silence” is a quantum state of consciousness, not just “thinking” about what you are doing. Consciousness is kept in the “thinking mode” forcibly, just like that, it is not possible to get out of the Matrix of the “internal dialogue” (Collective Unconsciousness) and for 98% forever in this life.

Thé animal kingdom have a good mastery in just sitting just observing just being present. My cats are good at just sitting but I really find powerful animals sitting in silence really majestic. Silverback gorillas spend a lot of time in silence in observation in stillness for such a powerful animal. But equally silence doesn’t mean that a fast action can’t come from a calm moment. Certainly a silverback can become a fast mover from a place of stillness. Thoughts that have invention creativity and problem solving can arrive out of the blue like a flash of lightening out of deep dark stillness. The flash is all the brighter for the silky darkness of the sky. The mind can be limitless expanse of no thought like an expanse of dark sky and without expectation our mind can work so fast to give us an answer or a direction. They say Silence is golden makes it precious but maybe also gives a chance for our halos to shine.

I traveled a lot - learned that hotels and hallways with kids running in them and louder ambient noises not like home were messing with a good nights sleep. I experimented with different ear plugs and found that Flents "Quiet Please" use once or twice and toss works wonders all night long. Had a sump pump in the basement at home directly under the master bedroom. The pump back-check valve thump when it rained annoyed me as it was different. I started using the ear plugs at home. Now decades later, I wont sleep without them - anywhere. I buy these in a bulk container. The Bose noise canceling headphones were perfect for flight (I began to loathe the open cabin sound of airplanes and airports have little noise of need - I set alarms on my phone for flights so I know when to check flight display monitors). I use these for hours daily with my Ipad and listen to Channels of interest - even in the car. Its like finding out that silence or good control of sound is preferential almost always. I also find that there is a slowing down effect - so focus is intentional. I can listen to concentration music specifically on yourtube that permit me full simple and deliberate focus on the issue at hand and I deal with things on time and efficiently. Its literally like finding a vane of pure gold. A few hints... Quiet please by Flents are good for one or two uses - I buy in a large container very cost effectively. Buy a small supply at first form the drug store. Only the Bose has an elastomer oval pod that fits my ear better than the common circle buds. I find circular buds to hurt when wearing over an hour. Keep them clean daily with ZEISS Wipes (used for eye glasses) - buy in bulk. They don't scratch glasses either.
