I’m a percussionist, but tuba was always my favorite brass instrument. When the Tuba line hits a chord and it’s loud and strong... man it hits your heart. The most beautiful sound in any band or orchestra

Timpani and low brass are often (but not always) paired. Brass and percussion were later added to symphonic orchestral arrangements. Lower woodwind and cello pairings are common for the same reason. Oystein B glosses over the hilarious missteps in bass brass instrument history. Cimbasso, Serpent, Ophicleide, etc are delightful precursors to the modern tuba. He had limited time, and didn't bore the audience with the precursors.

As a 20 year tuba player I must say that man is not just a virtuoso, he's the Tuba Sage at the top of the mountain. "It's not about the limitations of the instrument, It's about the player." That is tuba-depth profundity.

In a "classic" concert you do NOT cheer within, you applaud at the end and if you are REALLY exited you get up and give "standing ovations". And in symphonies with more than one part you only applaud at the very end and NOT in between!😉

I live in Friesland. Similar 'intense' emotions... but some 50 years ago there was a blues performance of Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee and to my utter exaltation there was some movement in the crowd: like the upcoming tide at a moonlit dawn. Of course they were cold, the performance was in Norway! Most people in Northern Europe don't squeal and whoop at performers in the way that many audiences do in the U/S. That sort of histrionic reaction to an interesting demonstration of skills is often viewed as being ridiculous; inappropriate.

I had the honour of working for Harvey Phillips in the 80's and 90's. Thank you so much Oystein Baadsvik for taking up the flag (and the instrument) and driving it to new heights of exploration and expression. I have heard a lot of tubas in my life (I am not a player, was just an organiser and support worker for TubaChristmas events) - and the expression, range, and subtleties - and flexibility - of this performance is right in keeping with Dr. Phillip's philosophies of Tuba. Thank you. I am thrilled to hear your work.

I had a private lesson from this man back at itech 2002. I helped out getting musicians where they needed to be at the conference and for this my private lessons instructor David Palmer got me a lesson with him for a half hour he’s absolutely the most phenomenal to the player there has ever been or likely will ever be

I live on a short cul-de-sac street and there are 4 houses on the north side. The name of the street is Primrose Lane. Totally by chance, 4 tuba players have lived in those houses. One person has now passed away and one went away to college. Also, the street was named after the song, “Life is as Holliidayy in Primrose Lane” written by Red Callender, a now-deceased professional jazz tuba/bass player. I was born in 1947, almost the same day as Miraphone Tuba Company (which we all play. )

Well, forgive me for assuming that you mean it didn’t lead to much. If so, that’s your fault. If you didn’t get a free college education out of it, that’s a complete waste and shame. There are tons of college bands and not a “ton” of players for certain instruments.....I was an “average” tuba player and received my degree for free🤷🏻‍♂️

Very cool performance. I played myself for several years a trombone and my dad played at the same time didgeridoo. This made me experiment with playing techniques and your performance reminded me about these times in my childhood. I really understand how complex it is what you just showed. Very impressive, I take a deep bow. Your techniques seem to have quite some similarities with how people play didgeridoo.

What an amazing performance. At the end, it sounded very reminiscent of a digeridoo. I wonder if it is possible to do circulatory breathing while playing the tube to keep that droning noise going without the pauses for breath.

c31979839 it would be pointless. no music on tuba needs to hold a note that long. if you wanted to play an entire song as a long, giant slur then maybe?

You can in fact circular breathe on on a tuba. I can do it myself, takes a lot of practice to get it though.

Aidan Edwards it’s basically the exact same as doing it on a didjeridoo. i’m not saying it’s hard or impressive. i’m saying it’s pointless because the music never calls for a 5minute sustained note.

Andy ok. 1 songs does. you got me. stuff like that is written for a lot of bass instruments but generally they either subtly drop out and back in to breathe or stagger breathing with others in their section. you can’t maintain intonation and a bold sound with circular breathing.

I had the pleasure to see him in concert some years ago in Luxembourg. This was one of the most enterteining concerts which I have seen in my life. Hope he is doing well. Will look him uo. 4 minutes into the vid I hear myelf shouting d'acappo!

YO when I played Tuba I would ALWAYS want to mess around like this when I could!!! It's soooo amazing to see someone who perfected the art of Tuba beatboxing!!!!!
