Great speaker. Great talk!. Canada would definitely be a more interesting place with thriving indigenous languages.

In 2018, the BC provincial government invested $50 million over three years for Indigenous language revitalization for the nearly 200 First Nation communities.

That's because he's speaking to an English audience. People from France will speak English for TED despite it being a well established language.

That's such a goddang shame these little kids weren't allowed to share their culture with the other kids. Were so prohibited. Awful history. I really enjoyed learning French but I wanted to learn more languages closer to home! Languages more useful for exploring Ontario, where I live, not Quebec or France!!

Justin Trudeau said "Canada has no core identity." Therefore no language or culture is truly "needed". Also, why is your indigenous name still spelled in English?

Because indigenous languages were not written. There are two methods of writing them today, syllabics or roman orthography like he did, he did not write it in english

mhtinla so why does Trudeau continue to bend over for Quebec? Hypocrisy.

He wrote it in Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, not English. Yes, the writing system was based on the Latin alphabet, but it is not written in English. That's like saying Spanish is written in English.

If his indigenous name cannot be written down, don't write it then. By using the Western alphabets (Latin, Roman, whatever you call it) he continues to honor his oppressors. Also, why does he stop at languages? Canada needs thriving indigenous civilizations -- no electricity, no internet, no cell phone. Any indigenous takers?

Disagree, but not because I speak english. I understand that it is hard to lose one's culture and language, however, as humanity comes together, we need to be flexible and merge with whatever keeps driving us forward. Because of this, I choose to learn a language based on the economics. (and no, I'm learning Japanese right now, and perhaps Korean in the future)

English is not a language that “drove us forward” to begin with. So learning Korean has nothing to do with the point of this video. My opinion. Nonetheless I see you just aren’t able to appreciate a culture you weren’t raised in. Learning our language is more about recognizing history. After all an elder once told me that you can’t eat a dollar.

So are u saying that because japanse and Korean languages are more dominant and indigenous languages need not be learned as its looking backwards and not forwards ???!!!! History is history and if you knew a thing about not knowing your culture and language and the heart ache it brings and missing something you didn’t know was missing you wouldn’t say that so plause

So learn Mandarin and Spanish

Felix Thunderbird - actually, English is used widely because it has many, many more descriptive words for things which makes it a very flexible and efficient language. This does not mean other languages have do not have value. For example, we should be learning to speak Spanish more than French. Even Mandarin has more future value than French. Indigenous languages have a right to exist and have as much value as English, French or any other language. $ is the language that everyone understands and some are devoted to it. $ drives business, mostly in English and now Mandarin. This is precisely why other languages are needed. Maybe through culture we can find more value in our lives than earth killing products we don’t need.

How much money would it take to educate people in all of those different languages? Who is going to pay for that? The majority paying for the minority? It sounds so selfish to want that, especially when homeschooling is still a viable option.

So selfish of those who were subjected to genocide want the society which engineered that genocide to actually make the bare minimum of effort to reverse it. You are despicable.
