This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences.
For leaders in a democracy like ours to tackle the big problems we face today, they need three things: a coherent ideology or vision of what is and should be; an ability to move people with a compelling message; and clean, fair elections. Our democracy today has none of those things -but it doesn't have to be that way
Professor Westen received his B.A. at Harvard University, an M.A. in Social and Political Thought at the University of Sussex (England), and his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at the University of Michigan, where he subsequently taught for six years. For several years he was Chief Psychologist at Cambridge Hospital and Associate Professor at Harvard Medical School. His major areas of research are personality disorders, adolescent psychopathology, political psychology, psychotherapy effectiveness, and the interface of psychodynamics and neuroscience. An active clinician, researcher, and political consultant, Dr. Westen is the Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator for two grants from NIMH. His book, The Political Brain: The Role of Emotion in Deciding the Fate of the Nation, has had a wide influence on elections internationally. He has advised a wide range of candidates and organizations, from presidential campaigns to the U.S. House and Senate Caucuses, and has written for the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Huffington Post, and a range of other publications.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

In Reagan's presidency, he also enhanced the war on drugs and created laws whose effects can still be felt today. These laws have sent people to jail/prison for multiple years over grams of marijuana and 25 years+ for selling cocaine. He also helped to close down mental institutions that help those with mental illnesses. Many of those began to self-medicate with drugs and ended up becoming criminals for simply using drugs.

Reagan was the worst president of the 20th century. Many of his disastrous policies and ideas are still plaguing us, to various degrees.

Great talk, but just a tiny correction, although Brazil is very mixed, race is just as much an issue, as it is in America. Perhaps even more so.

I am not so sure about the comment of mixing of races will be a great day in America. In my experience, this is not the case. Racial discrimination exists in places were there are no white people, however there is a preference for light or fair skin.

This felt like a sermon from the Progressive Church--the ultimate authority on leftist mythology. He even blames conservatives for trashing the term 'liberal'.

Two things if you are against unions, collective bargaining, and a 15 dollar minimum wage, and a pension of which workers worked for and negotiated for, you are a fascist. Second, thing, if you don't want to pay taxes for unemployment insurance, Medicaid, Medicare, and food stamps, and higher education, you will not be able to profit from it from the rest of us who are paying taxes on it. You get nothing. Understand? Nothing. Starve for all I care. In fact, if I had my way you would be forbidden from entering a library because you paid no taxes. You will not profit from public goods. Is that clear?

Mr. Zinna, with many "public goods" if we weren't taxed to pay for them, we would have enough money that we wouldn't need them in the first place.
