Amira Elghawaby, a human rights advocate and journalist, shares her experiences growing up in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada and drinking the multicultural kool-aid. While she found it in abundant supply in her youth, she finds its running dry now. She argues that each of us should become diversity champions and help renew the supply. The goal? Promoting inclusive communities for all. Follow Amira on Twitter @AmiraElghawaby Amira Elghawaby is an award-winning journalist and human rights advocate. Along with frequent appearances on Canadian and international news networks, Amira has written and produced stories and commentary for CBC Radio, the Ottawa Citizen, the Toronto Star, the Literary Review of Canada, and the Globe and Mail. The last time I was in Toronto, it didn't feel like a vibrant melting pot of cultures. It felt more like an international economic zone. The Indians, Pakistanis, Jamaicans, Africans, Whites and Chinese pretty much stick to their own enclaves. I didn't get a sense of shared Canadian-ness.

Canada is NOT a land of immigrants. The more apt description would be to say that It is a land of extended-stay expats, at this point. Honestly, as an immigrant, acquiring Canadian citizenship felt just like getting a Costco Membership. I think that there is something missing when I think about a sense of Canadian national identity. What is it? What makes people feel Canadian? If you want to experience Canadian multiculturalism, just visit any major international airport around the world and that about sums it up. There is nothing that allows to me "feel Canadian". It is a franchise model of multiculturalism. Domino's Pizza pretty much. There is no real mixing between groups. The European-descent are doing their own thing. The Quebecois have their own little ethno-nationalist state. Indo-Canadians doing their own thing. The Chinese doing their own thing. And so on. There may be some intermingling but honestly minimal, even in cities like Toronto or Montreal. The whole immigration/multiculturalism has been promoted, branded, marketed, etc because the capitalist class of Canada - the ones that are really running the gig - need new people as if they were running human farm.

In 2004 I wrote a somewhat famous article called 'Top 8 reasons not to immigrate to Canada'. In short, the Canadian authorities tried to destroy my life. They made it so that I could not be employable in Canada. So I moved to the U.S. in 2005 and then some years later I moved permanently to the Philippines. I am happy that so many years later videos like yours are saying essentially the same things that I did. I was ahead of my time. I will never go back to Canada. Not to live, not to visit, not even a connecting flight. Too cold, too expensive, taxes are astronomical, no culture, no freedom, no jobs, no opportunities, only modern slavery, worst healthcare system, unbearable political correctness, crime infested/drug infested, xenophobic people, too depressing. It has become a North Korea style dictatorship in the western world. Their are many reasons why Canada has fallen apart. But the number one reason is ‘multiculturalism’. My friends, multiculturalism simply does not work. Different cultures do not come together and mix, different cultures come together and clash. The world is divided into different countries for a reason: because people hate each other and only want to be with their own kind. The number two reason for Canada’s demise is ‘socialism’. In this modern era of aging populations, it is mathematically impossible for socialism to continue. The government does not have the money to take care of old people and provide healthcare, pensions and the various other benefits, even with the astronomical taxation that burdens hard working Canucks. Well Canada, you had a good run. Time for Canucks to move to an emerging country. We welcome you here in Southeast Asia.

Mulitculturalism in Canada is a sham and has FAILED. I am a mixed race person, born and raised in Canada, who has come to realize over the years through experiences at work and (and out of work-) socializing that, Multiculturalism has NOT created a pluralistic democratic minded society open to change and adaption, but one that still revers - celebrates each singular ethnic identity above else . Look at vast majority of Whites, Asians, Blacks, Latinos in urban centres here they are " really happy and thrilled " to just to "survive" and live - exist next ( or as far apart if you will from) to each other and pretend this is multiculturalism. Most have Zero Interest in Learning anything about Canada anything let alone have any curiousity to learn something about another ethnic group's history, cultural background and values. Immigration is making this worse, and people are willingly retreating into this shell of unwritten segregation. To be more blunt, for a so called "multicultural;" city like Toronto, you hardly ever see inter-racial couples / marriages or gatherings, it is almost as if every racial group ( imbued also with their own prejudices and feelings of superiority ) prefers and wants to NOT "mix" or "mingle". Their mentality is inherently CONSERVATIVE. Many immigrants might vote Liberal NOT because they personally identify with liberal values, but because Liberal Politics is nothing more to them than a vehicle to get their own perks for themselves or family. Another example are many people from China who come to Canada just to exploit and milk it for their own benefits ( passports and making $$$$), they bring in lotta $$ in buy various homes and rent them out for tax free profit without even properly learning either any or properly English Language along the way ( even if they live here long enough) Divisions are already in Canada, lets not kid ourselves, but polite Canadians are much better than their American cousins at pretending there is NO problem in Canada, and saying "look at US . They are so so terrible". Too many double standards and hollow rhetoric going round these days. So you don't have be a Populist to see whats wrong.

I think the problem is the way almost every developped country are dealing with its immigration system. Nowadays it seems like country are taking immigrants for the sake of making money (off rich foreigners) or taking cheap labors (from poor immigrants, illegals, asylum seekers...) The gouvernement don't really care about assimilation, integration, social equality....they care about the economic impact $$$ or staying in powers.
@LevisH21
@LevisH21 3 жыл бұрын
@@YouYou-sm8tf true but also, let's just be honest and straightforward. there are no net benefits to immigration in the first place besides some ethic restaurant around the corner of the street. some Japanese Sushi restaurant or a Turkish kebab shop. in the West young people might even enjoy watching some foreign type of media like anime bit that wouldn't really mean much because the Japanese would still prefere to live within their own gated community just like anyone else. and immigration is good for the economy? not really. Japan and South Korea are extremely well developed and rich countries. both countries are almost ethnically homogenous. they bacame rich without the help of foreigner workers or immigrants. they became rich because they had something to export to the rest of the world. their products and services. so yes. multiculturalism, diversity and immigration are just an illusion that only serve multinational corporations. just cheap labour.

Excellent post. Canada is not a land of immigrants. It's basically a good place for extended-stay expats. International airport. Canadian citizenship = Costco Membership. The Canadian identity is no more than a franchise brand. Domino's Pizza. Also, as a colored immigrant, let me tell you that a lot of immigrants do try to integrate but they realize that they can't penetrate through the Canadian mainstream. We do not really live in a completely color-blind society. Canada maintains decency but a totally color-blind utopic level of integration is impossible. In the end, immigrants revert back to their own ethnic bloc, especially as people have children etc. A lot of Chinese-Canadians or Indo-Canadians born in Canada are super westernized and yet they prefer to hang out by themselves. Why do you think that is?

She's right when she says that hate crime come from fear and ignorance. But people like her rarely have the courage to ask this simple question: Why do so many people fear Islam? I can't recall how many attacks happened in mosques in Pakistan and Afganistan because there are so many. How many Shiites and Sunnites kill each other in Irak and elsewhere? What Islamists say about homosexuality? What do Fundamentalist say to woman when thay wear a mini-kirt in the street? So, I'm not surprise if some people have harsh words for islamic veil because they associate the veil with fundamentalism and his bad sides. In the same way I would understand if some Africans have bad words for me in Africa as a white person because of the colonial past, I would understand if some Canadian have bad words for me if I wear the hijab or the islamic beard. By the way, I spent few months in Morroco, and my Marrocan friends were scared of fundamentalists there. So, no surprise if Canadians are also scared.
