SUPERMARKETS NEED TO CONTACT LOCAL NURSING HOMES & ASSISTED LIVING PLACES TO SEND PERISHABLE FOOD ITEMS LIKE FRUITS & VEGS IN GREAT QUANTITY OR LESS ON A DAILY OR WEEKLY BASIS FOR DISTRIBUTION AT THOSE FACILITIES THAT HIGHLY NEED IT, SINCE THE CHEFS NEED TO COOK LARGE AMOUNTS OF FOOD ON A DAILY BASIS FOR THE RESIDENTS & STAFF AS WELL, & DOING THIS IS A GREAT POSITIVE GOAL FOR EVERYONE !

I work for a food bank and we pick up food from supermarkets, bakeries, butchers. Sadly we see that they bin a whole lot more food than they give us! Lots of the dumpsters are full of still good food!

These videos should be shown at school and in the public...or at least the society should be better inform about food waste..

Awesome talk! I just posted on One of my local grocery stores Facebook homepage is requesting that they watch this Ted talk and asking them if they would be willing to be part of the solution. I used to work in a supermarket in England back in the eighties before Sunday shopping. My boss told me after he signed out at 5pm that I had to mark down the produce that was best before date was out before Monday but to a max of 15%. After a few weeks of then having to put the produce we didn't sell at 15% reduction in the skip (dumpster) after the store closed, I started to mark produce down to the point of half price and beyond. Word soon got around and after a while I was like the pied piper of Hamlyn with a posse of bargin chasing customers behind me, and I realised that this is all about profit because the stores know that customers will wait for someone like me who discounts too much, I carried on regardless and used to sort much of the stuff I should have thrown away to sell it to friends at a quarter of the face price, all the ingredients for full english breakfasts on a Sunday morning, we ate like Kings.

Thanks Rob for keeping the hope alive and showing we can fight for what's right.

Funny, The solution of donating to a non-profit just delays the food waste. One of the dumpsters I dive belongs to a local food-bank. They throw away what they think they can't give away... and they try to scare me away by telling me they will call the police! I feed people then animals with this food!

Shame on us!! We have to change laws so stores Can leave their good food waste out for homeless! Here were I live, it's against the law to dumpster dive. It's considered retail theft. :( Some stores even put a padlock on their dumpsters. There are people who would and should be able to eat it if they need to. This video will not be shown where it needs to be seen because Corporations don't want people to get FREE food!! grrrrr

I used to work at a supermarket for 2 years. They throw out food that is perfectly normal and still good to eat. A perfectly looking banana was thrown out just because "it will have a bit of browning spot by tomorrow, not looking good". They throw out on average 4 full trolleys of food (vegetables, fruits, bread, etc). what is worst is that how the distribution and how they store eggs is very bad. We will have many eggs breaking in the store and what is even worst is that a whole pack of eggs (12-24 packs) will all get throw out if there is 1 egg broken inside the pack. I lose count on how many perfectly good eggs that I have to throw out. we have 200 staff and we're not allowed to take some of them home.

our local SPAR marks down yesterday's rolls less than half price and I always end up buying them. They are still good food and I save a ton. Sometimes they also do that with yesterdays pies and sweet bakes as well. waste not want not....

I live in south africa. One time i went to a grocery store(Pick n Pay) In Fourways at night, they were almost about to close. I went to go get a quick stack at the cooked food section, and when i was done ordering i noticed that there was a lot of cooked food still left over. I asked what they were going to do with it and the lady said, they throw all the left overs away every night. I thought i should have my snack for free since it will be thrown out in a few minutes.

In Europe there is this App called Too Good To Go, which fights food waste and is also a good way for the businesses to turn some losses to revenue. I think they started to launch in New York as well.

I saw that grocery stores lock dumpsters in 2020! I asked if I could have what they are throwing away and the manager said it is a liability to the store!!

This a reality folks, unfortunate but true. I design eco-communities, farms, gardens, food systems, greenhouses, etc. with a team of 8-10, each with degrees from Naturopathic doctor, architect, permaculture farmers, certified food producer, regenerative agriculture, etc. and I have been in this type work for many years. Part of my background was in Oregon and I lived for 6 months on site, working with a non-profit that had 40-60 volunteers (only 2 hr shifts), 2 minivans, a home garage turned into food packaging place (2 refrigerators, freezers, walk-in cooler, etc.) and weekly, 52 weeks per year, we would visit 35-40 places (produce dept. & deli's at groceries, bakeries, farmer's market booths at end of shows, etc.) and pick up food that was set aside, that otherwise would be destined for the dumpsters as this gentlemen is finding. Perfectly good food, maybe a spot on an apple, yogurt approaching "sell by" date but to make room from new stock it was being let go, milk, cheeses, deli dishes, breads with a dimple on top "not perfect" and other foods being discarded as newer stock arrived. Pick-ups were daily and brought back to the house garage. Then re-packaged into custom boxes, tailored each for the group receiving and what they could use....a head-start school, migrant workers camp, couple churches that gave away meals, food pantry (like discounted dented canned goods) and the boxes were delivered with the minivans and all for free. This cycle and flow of food coming in and quickly be custom boxed to go out was 7 days a week year-round. The incoming boxes of food were weighed and this amounted to average 10,000 to 12,000 pounds of food every week being gifted......great food that was destined for the dumpsters like what these people found in this video. I am also keenly aware of this as part of our work is when we design gardens we also teach people how to grow their own food at home. Great work here by Mr. Rob Greenfield to set an example and bring this reality to people's consciousness. BTW, the organization that rescued food I described and lived/worked with, all started by one lady, just seeing a need and acting. She had been doing this 18 years when I was there in 2011 so that is for 29 years now.

Probably easier to get rid of grocery stores and malls. The massive amount of packing that goes into all of these useless things, most of which get thrown out, is far more litter then one person having a moment of weakness. I'm sure you've never had a moment like that even in your worst of moments..... and also the only reason the litter existed in the first place is because people go to them because they feel like they need to to survive.

It disgusts me that so much food is being THROWN AWAY while tons of people are STARVING!! I highly support #DonateNotDump!

Good points. I had some questions. Why were you not going to let people eat the food you sourced from dumpsters? Why not start a homeless food program with all the food you sourced or continue to source?Also why hasn't anyone thought of a liability waiver relieving anyone of the ability to sue if one did get food poisoning? I think you have great points, continue fighting the good fight
