TEDx Talks

6 жыл бұрын

NOTE FROM TED: Please do not look to this talk for medical advice. The speaker makes strong assertions about a specific diet that lack sufficient scientific evidence for general prescription. TEDx events are independently organized by volunteers. The guidelines we give TEDx organizers are described in more detail here: storage.ted.com/tedx/manuals/t...
According to the Global Burden of Disease study (the largest study of disease risk factors in history; funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation) the #1 cause of both death and disability in the United States is our diet. Cigarettes now only kill about a half million Americans every year, whereas our diet appears to kill hundreds of thousands more. The good news is that means we have tremendous power over our health destiny and longevity. Healthy eating has the potential to not only prevent, but reverse some of our leading causes of death including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and high blood pressure. Why, then, is nutrition not the #1 thing taught in medical school? American physician, author, and speaker on public health issues, particularly the benefits of a whole foods, plant-based diet and the harms of eating animal products. He is a vegan and the creator of NutritionFacts.org. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Excellent presentation. The facts are conclusive. We need to learn with history: In a few years we will be disgusted by the food industry manipulative tactics like we are today by the 1950's tobacco industry tactics. People have the power to change right way what are they eating and to make politicians pass laws that prohibits misguided manipulative adverts. We must demand scientific accurate nutrition classes for medical staff as they are the providers of a service that deals directly with our lives and deaths! What is more important than our health?!..

I have nothing but praise for Dr. Greger. He is the leading expert on nutrition nowadays. Within years from now, people will talk about unhealthy food in the same way they are talking about smoking. Actually it's happening already and more and more people each day are more and properly informed about the fabulous benefits of a plant based healthy diet. Now gimme those beets and chard, spinach, kale, carrots, cabbage, apples, oranges, beans, nuts, oats etc.!

That change is taking place in health conscious societies, where there are efforts to raise awareness about the role of nutrition and behavioural habits in preventing and treating/coping with diseases. Change is resisted in societies, where there is ignorance about the contribution of diet and habits in maintaining healthy life style. Change is rejected by those who consider eating and smoking a pleasure due to addiction. There is also a group which is aware, but cannot afford or have no access to a healthy diet.

This man is just brilliant. I'm haunted by a response I received from my Oncologist in 2014 when I was diagnosed with cancer. I just knew in my bones that diet was part of the answer for cure/prevention. I started to talk about nutrition and the response was, "Nothing you ate caused this. You just won the world's worst lottery." To their credit it was indeed a rare cancer, but it's back, and (once again) I wish I had listened to that divine voice trying to save me. Thank God this time He's sent an Angel/Doctor to help me save my life!; especially since my employer made it impossible for me to properly take care of myself last time. No job is more important than your health. If you can, once you know that your health and happiness is not a priority to your employer, move on!

As a professor I have studied and shared the absolute lunacy of all of those old tobacco ads and shared them with my student. I published research regarding smoking activity in today's elementary schools. Dr. Greger DID present evidence of actual vetted studies in his presentation, but just like in today's world people don't want to believe the science. My husband became a vegan five years ago at 330 pounds. Within two years he had lost 115 pounds and is doing very well at 70 years old. Thanks Dr. Greger for the reminder.

1) there is lots of science that has come out since this video and there’s no way of knowing if some of the advice is the complete opposite of what better science suggests. 2) it’s easy to cherry pick from the science to arrive at whatever conclusion you want. Look up “material omission.” 3) there are plenty of “experts” in the medical and scientific communities who looked at the same body of research and have come to radically different conclusions. 4) people have different dietary sensitivities and are in various medications. There’s no one size fits all. For many people, a purely carnivore diet solves their major medical problems and lets them live healthy lives. Would be absurd for them to switch to plant based. Veganism is basically a religion anyway when you see how it’s discussed. Much of the research is done with mice and other animals.

Hi! I'm from Italy and I'm reading the subtitles in Italian. I found out there is an error... when the doctor says "plant based diet" the subtitles say "vegetariano" than means "vegetarian" but this is slightly incorrect, because we all now that a vegetarian diet is not a "plant based diet". So as not to mislead people and really help who don't understand english I would suggest to change "vegetariano" in to "dieta vegana" ("vegan diet") . Thanks for your cooperation.

My life totally and completely changed when I changed from a typical American diet to a Pesco Vegetarian diet. I am now changing to a 100% Vegan diet. On my Pesco Vegetarian diet, I ELIMINATED 3 medications...THREE. My weight and BMI is fantastic. I have chronic pain w/ortho and neuro causes, but, they are much better since I switched in 2013

I love Dr.Greger's info, and also am trying to raise awareness of this facebook page for those not ready for strictly whole foods. Reversing disease / losing weight with sugar (facebook page) Copying Rob Adam's comment from another site, "Sugar doesn't rot your teeth. Plaque does. In the absence of plaque you could spend the whole day with a mouth full of sugar and not get tooth decay. If you are a grot, sugar will make a bad situation worse. Clean your teeth then eat what you want (Preferably a whole foods, plant-based)

Excellent review of the evidence basis for nutritional therapy! We were lucky in Naturopathic Medical School to have nutrition taught as a main treatment, and have peer-reviewed studies summarized by the likes of Dr. Alan Gaby, MD.

The parallel with the tobacco industry and smoking in our society is brilliant, Dr. Gregor. I remember those times and the smoke-filled rooms, airplanes, waiting rooms, restaurants, doctors offices (!), and our own home where my father and mother both smoked. Jesus…

At 215 pounds (I was 140 pounds in high school) I had high blood pressure, arthritis, asthma, hay fever, diverticulitis, hemorrhoids, I had no energy and felt terrible. 6 months on McDougall diet now I'm 165 pounds and health issues are gone. Now I'm doing the Pritikin diet and feel years younger.
