Crohn’s disease not only stole more than 3 years from Chris Adams’ “life”, but it also stunted his growth and forced him to quit the sport he loved playing. After a fortuitous moment watching MTV, and an encounter with a musical hero years later, his path was changed forever. Chris Adams is the Board President for the Northwest Chapter of the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation. Having lived with Crohn’s disease for more than 33 years, Chris has endured several surgeries and countless life changing complications. Through it all, Chris took those challenges in stride and has since connected to a world he could not have imagined. His unique outlook on life has enabled him to persevere, overcome, and connect with a world that he could have never imagined. Chris now works closely with Pearl Jam’s Mike McCready (also a Crohn’s patient) on raising awareness and finding a cure for those affected by IBD. More info: www.crohnscoli... This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I had the amazing fortune of meeting Chris and his wife and son yesterday. While he told me he had Crohn’s disease never really understand what somebody goes through until you hear it in it’s exacting detail. I know other friends who have this disease but what Chris has described for me makes it something more tangible. I don’t throw the word hero around very easily because I believe circumstances come our way no matter what Avenue of life we are in and we are simply forced to deal with it. However hearing Chris upon meeting him and seeing the joy and happiness in his life and his family, does elevate his stature in my mind. He and his wife are both heroes and I wish them all the best are they continue in their life, their marriage and their goal to help find a cure for this disease.

Chris lived near a bar my family owned in Kirkland, WA. I played little guitar gigs and he was often in attendance. He's a incredibly amazing person. Biggest heart you'll find. And after what he has endured, is a testimony to his character. I'm very proud of him.

Chris's description of the day to day challenges of those of us who have Crohn's is spot on! If anything, he sweetened it a bit. I have messed my pants while on stage, shed straight blood instead of feces, had numerous blockages, had one foot of small intestine turn necrotic and need to be removed, sepsis, C-diff, pneumonia that was probably brought on by the auto-immune medication that I am on, and twice I have been taken off of all food and liquid (including water and ice chips) for six weeks straight. I even thought one time of publishing a book rating public and business bathrooms around the country as a guide for people such as me who need a clean and functioning bathroom immediately while traveling. Thanks, Chris, for your eloquence and advocacy!!

Very Inspirational and uplifting. Makes you want to hug anyone who is battling something in their lives. Better yet, hug everyone because we are all dealing with things. Great Job Chris!!!

Thanks Erik! Appreciate that. I have a life motto that I try and share (although not in this speech). "We all have issues, they aren't necessarily better or worse, they're just different..."

Wow, this was incredible. Let me wipe the tears from my eyes before typing … I too have an autoimmune disease which was crippling for most of my 20s & 30s… with that I’ve had several Colitis flare ups.. isolated periods of my life that thankfully have passed. I’ve almost always suffered in silence… but with the help of yes… Pearl Jams music. Hearing /watching you tell your story, beautiful & inspiring. You so deserve all the joy and healing that you are now experiencing and spreading into the world ✌️❤️🤘

Wow, hugely inspiring and a story not too dissimilar to mine. I too have met some inspiring people that have changed my life, probably one of your favourite doctors too... Dr Stein. Amazing speech and I will share with friends because from education and understanding comes empathy and understanding. I now work for CCNZ, and organise Camp Purple Live. I could have taken my crohns diagnosis badly, I could have easily curled up in the corner... but I now know if I didn't have crohns I wouldn't have a job I love, I wouldn't have met the amazing people I have met, and I wouldn't have found my purpose in life 💜 So inspiring and never stop all this good work you are doing! You and Mike are true IBD Warriors!
