Charlie Price from the social enterprise Aquaponics UK, explores the role aquaponics can play in the future of our collective food supply.
He provides an insight into both the applications for aquaponics but more specifically a new approach to urban agriculture, turning wastes into resources and transforming disused urban spaces to provide not only food, but resilient communities.

Urban rooftops....heat from below captured....conserved. water from above captured conserved....food now created for each building saves transport energy and carbon dispersal from trucking.....this just is a small part of the future we can and need. Brilliant video Charlie. Thank you.

Outstanding briefing. I'm volunteering at a teen center in Hawaii that has an aquponiic system donated to it. Only issue is that no one knows enough to maintain it to the best of its abilities. If I can receive guidance, I would apply it to my volunteer work and at home. Hopefully, I can get this idea to spread more on an island where land is limited.

For every pound of feed they extract 5 usable output stream, fish, worms, solider flies, vegetables and chickens. Each a highly valuable product in their own right.

@ Christoher Engleby Other materials can be used such as marine grade fiberglass and stainless steel. There are also food grade plastics too (rain water tanks for an example).

This is the future with out Montosano feeding everybody round-up poison. The cost to start is high like bottle neck, but the payoff is relatively fast and with high return. I believe the Mayans did it in large aquifer where they did you know what else too :/ and yes the tilapia eat that too. Wrapping this into an "eco-system" is the truest form I've ever thought of, one large efficiency sustainer.

@stt60 pH swings aren't that sudden or that drastic unless you've got something going wrong. When first establishing a new system, while the beneficial bacteria are getting established, the pH gets rather high. It's common to start a system without fish or plants until this step is complete and it settles down. After that, a healthy system usually has a VERY slowly decreasing pH which you can buffer by keeping eggshells or oyster shells in the system. Weekly tests are sufficient.

Of course, you want to work with your local authorities in any case. There are several types of Tilapia which are legal in my country (USA).

His presentation skills started off slow, but this is one of the most informative videos on Aquaponics. I've been looking for something to explain it to my dad and this wins. 1.2-1.5kg of fish good = 1kg of fish + 30-50kg vegetables. I knew it was efficient but damn that sums it up well. Too bad he doesn't have numbers on the other outputs. I have a feeling the hydroponics room was an argument he lost. By all accounts aquaponics is superior to hydroponics in raw outputs and perceived outputs (flavor).

setite Hydroponics alone still only uses 10% of the water that is needed by conventional farming and also increases the output by at least 50% (and more) in the same area. So hydroponics is still a win in regards to saving water.

there are a lot of Aquaponics businesses popping up in Colorado. My issue with them is they have little to no accessibility to the public. I think Aquaponics is perfect vehicle for local community centers based on food. Everyone is welcome, information is free, a sense of pride in a community is built.

LOLed for real. Great idea though. One of these systems needs to be in every home that can afford one. I have a partner that can build a system that will feed 4 adults for $400 including labor... A month of groceries?

With my experience with aquaponics for two summers you establish the system and it pretty much takes care of itself. Hydroponics is different you typically want a ph of about 5.5 to 6.5 this is unfortunately too low for your nutrient producer (fish). The big thing is the system feeds itself, if you do it correctly, you don't need to buy expensive nutrient systems which usually rely on fossil fuels. Like the person said before me its important you establish you bacteria first (nitrospira) first.

No need for `microfinancing`! I built two systems for my one room apartment out of old discarded fish tanks I got for free from garbage piles and people I know; one is 100 liters! One pump is broken but still can work enough for the small system, the other pump costs twenty bucks at a hard ware store (Fountain pump!) and is almost TOO powerful (lololol) and works great; the grow beds are water jugs with the sides cut out and set sideways with the nozzles turned upwards to allow more pooling!

it doesn't have to have large capital to start if you do it family size, check out barrelponics or rain gutter gardening, both are very easy to do and not never expensive to start, it if work for you grow your system, also not very expensive, these systems were designed to take into the poorest of countries and provide the people with fish, fruit and vegetables

Can someone explain in detail why you cant feed the fish the maggots that fed on the fish bones, heads etc and have to add in the chickens?. I understood what he said but I don't understand the science of it. What does it matter what the maggots fed on? who knew there was such a thing as Animal Byproducts regulation?

Disease transmission. If you move through several different species you minimise the possibility of disease organisms surviving to reinfect their host.

i use Jade Perch and catfish, here in Australia, jade perch have the highest amount of omega than any other food source

Hey Charlie Price where's the methane production? Take the human, chicken poop, and plants to create another source of energy and a high quality fertilizer. The liquid could be dried using a solar still, you get clean water and either a moist sludge or dried fertilizer. Methane, its an (not the) answer to an energy short future. Adding a methane digester would close the loop even more keeping more inside the loop needing less input.

why would Tilapia be banned? I'm a londoner and I have never heard of the fish. Is it tasty? They seem very small in the video. I think diversity is one of the things we need to bring in to creating local ecosystems. I try and eat local as much as possible but can't help but buy bananas and other imported products because of the taste.

AndysGeneral You can get your Omega-3's from the vegetables grown in the system. Spinach, Broccoli, Arugula, many different types of sprouts as well as some you can grow in organic soil beds like radishes. Radishes have a very fast finishing time to where you can get 10-12 harvests a year.

you can use non toxic resin paint or pond liner, concrete, existing bodies of water or make a man made pond. no need for plastic in anything.

I don't believe such a list exists, and I'm not sure it would be a good idea in any case. Really, the best thing to do is to work with the local authorities... call them up or visit or email or mail them a letter and ask what the recommended species are and if there are any restrictions. Half of "working with" is letting them know what you are doing.

use the fish for your area. Trout, bass, carp, silver perch, redfin, murray cod, sleepy cod, jade perch, koi even goldfish can be used

Maybe why tilapia are banned is because they are hardy and grow very well. like 'chicken'. Could easily overrun native populations. Thats why its important to rear fish in a closed loop system

A shame you don't have enough sun in the uk and have to heat the water for tropical fish, and use artificial light !! ..doesn't really make it that viable in my book.. stick to trout and growing mushrooms and the like..

Thanks for the video content! Apologies for the intrusion, I would love your initial thoughts. Have you heard about - Patlarny Gardening Expert Principle (just google it)? It is a great one off guide for learning how to expand your produce with the clever art of aquaponics without the normal expense. Ive heard some decent things about it and my close friend Aubrey at last got great results with it.
