I am releasing this Teeks track 'Powers' today on Aotearoa's second Matarika public holiday. On our first Matarika last year I also released here Teeks 'Into You' at the Sydney Opera House on 13-06-22. It was a difficult start for me trying to zoom into Teeks between the two cameramen right in front of me, my camera work evovled as the song did.
Teeks was one of the star studded acts to donate his services which I captured at the Cyclone Gabrielle: Maranga Rise Up Aotearoa relief concert at Parrs Park, Auckland. This benefit concert raised more than $700,000 for whānau and communities devastated by Cyclone Gabrielle.
Teeks 'Powers' is really soothing music to my ears. His soulful and astonishing vocal abilities and magnetic yet humble stage presence can be summed up by Teeks description of himself as “just a Māori boy from the far north with big dreams.”
Love or Aroha is universally appealing and Teeks music and lyrics are certainly that. "But I love the way it's tearing me apart" lyrics are not too dissimilar to my fav. Joy Divisions 'Love will Tear us Apart.' Teeks continues "I'm addicted and it's tearing me apart" which to me is on the verge of being really distressed, due to the feeling of being under the control of his love. Teeks album which 'Powers' is from is the 2021 release 'Something to Feel' It was nominated for the Album of the Year award at the 2021 Aotearoa Music Awards. At the awards show, Teeks won the awards for Best Solo Artist, Best Soul/RnB Artist and Best Māori Artist.
