Roselinde Kaiser asks: what is it about the teen years that puts us at risk for depression - but also helps us to build resilience? Drawing upon neurodevelopmental and clinical science, Dr. Kaiser shows why adolescence is a developmental window of both risk and enrichment, and outlines strategies for teens (and the rest of us) to thrive. Dr. Rosi Kaiser is a clinical psychologist and neuroscientist who uses integrated behavioral, developmental, and neuroscientific methods to understand Major Depression and related affective disorders. Dr. Kaiser explores these topics from a developmental perspective, with special interest in using neurocognitive risk markers to predict the onset and course of mood disorders in teens or young adults. Clinically, Dr. Kaiser is testing how neurocognitive functioning may be enhanced to foster affective health, with the goal of translating basic science into improved treatment and emotional wellness.
Dr. Kaiser received a dual-Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology and Neuroscience in 2013 from the University of Colorado Boulder, completing her predoctoral Clinical Internship at Yale University School of Medicine. After receiving her doctoral degree, Dr. Kaiser trained as a postdoctoral Fellow in affective and translational neuroscience at Harvard Medical School/McLean Hospital. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

It's not just "possible." It's do-able. I read a great book by Liz Mullinar last year called "Heal For Life" which deals with the subject of overcoming the pain of childhood trauma. It doesn't matter if you just feel sad or clinically depressed...I have spent years trying to find something that explains how to actually heal yourself without antidepressants. I have CPTSD and OCPD, along with the usual alphabet of "disorders," and I can say that this book is better than the rest of them put together. I'm a different person from the one I was a year ago, thanks to the understanding I've gained from it. I have no ties with Liz Mullinar and I certainly don't receive any recompense from recommending it. Incidentally, I'm not recovering from teen trauma...I'm 67 years old and I wish I'd had this information 50 years ago...the best bit, though, is that I'm "happy" within myself for the first time since I can recall.

She clearly put a lot of effort into this and she's so good at it, especially for a topic like this that's really important.

I'm 20, trust me it gets better. Just focus on your goals and find out what are they. Edit: People keep coming and replying to this comment to this day so I'll elaborate it a bit. Life is a plate, the more you have on your plate, the less sorrow you feel when you lose only one item from the plate. If your plate is empty, you'll feel empty. Fill up the plate with items i.e. activities, responsibility, hobby, self care, exploration, adventure, love, friends, family, profession etc etc. More details in the replies below that I did.

The most regrettable thing is that many people work hard on depression without realizing it. It all seems normal that the roller coaster of life is turning harder and faster to do everything as fast, much, automatically and cheaply and as big as possible. Not because it is necessary, but because our commanders and shareholders will never be satisfied with their sick ego and their greed.

@YourBakaSenpai its not about happiness. It's not heir job to make me happy, i get that. But as parents, I think they should show support and care. Instead they make fun of me for asking for help. And then they say that they are supportive, when they don't even care about me wanting to kill myself. I never got help. They are the only one that could have helped. And if one doesnt wanna support, doesnt wanna care or show love, then they should not become parents.

Thank you! I agree with the title, but I have to say that the concept of the teenage stage was not around until the early 1900's. The concept itself, together with societal pressure and expectancy shape and determine the mindsets we develop in those fragile, crucial and life-changing stages and these mindsets can be extremely difficult to change at a later stage

i just talked to a temporary therapist and she told me that it’s u who controls ur feelings and u shouldn’t let depression take over u. but it what if it already has? what if u had no other choice in everything? what if u do have a choice to be happy but no one helps u to be happy even urself? what if no one tries to understand u? what if someone or something already took over u that u offer ur entire capacity and attention to them because they trapped u and don’t understand u? depression isn’t something only one can get out of. if someone really cares, help that person with depression because it means a whole lot to them than having to live day by day trapped instead of doing something they once loved or enjoyed. at least they’ve got u to understand and help them.

Brain function follows the law of diminishing returns. A baby has a higher rate of brain function, but with limited experience the total intelligence is very small. Likewise an elder has great experience but reduced brain functionality. The peak is somewhere in the middle with experience and brain function combining for maximum effectiveness.

Mental health issues are genetic, just like cancers and heart disease for instance. You have lived a very traumatic event on top of that (PTSD). Illness of the brain can be either internal genetics or outside events, like the loss you have endured. Please, if you haven't yet, see a doctor, this is classic depression and nothing to be ashamed of. You are carrying a huge weight and what should we do when the weight is too much? We ask for help!! Please, don't be hard on yourself, you're just ailing and need a doctor. And when seeing the doctor, don't hold anything in or sugar coat it, tell him or her everything for the best help. Take care. :)

Are people the victims of their own emotions or not? I'm pretty sure that you actually can choose to not give over the power of how you feel to every single situation as they arise. Granted you couldn't possibly survive eternal sunshine so you can fall victim to the circumstance from time to time. How on Earth can anyone who took basic psychology classes act like the situation has more control over how we feel than we do? Wtf is wrong with you?

Are cars the victims of their own parts of not? I'm pretty sure that a car can actually choose to not give over the power of how they operate to every single condition as they arise. Granted cars couldn't possibly survive eternal pavement so you can fall victim to conditions from time to time. How on Earth can anyone who took basic mechanical classes act like the road has more control over how cars operate than they do? Wtf is wrong with you?

The way the many parts of your brain works and reacts to the things going on around you is how the environment can have more power over how we feel as we do
