Ellen welcomed 18-year-old Sivert and his mom Lorna, who offered her then 12-year-old son $1,800 to stay off social media until he was 18. She explained why she made the bet and he shared what it was like to spend his teen years without social media accounts. Then, Ellen gave him a chance to win money for his college education by doing some viral internet challenges that he may have missed out on over the years.

I wasn’t allowed to have social media until I was 18 and I’m really happy about it. I’m not addicted to it and just am generally happier than a lot of my friends

Did anyone notice how he was concerned for his mom crying? He kept checking on her. What a thoughtful, kind and attuned young man. My son is 12 and I will be attempting bringing this up to him. Lol.

This challenge turned out even better for him. He won an additional $10,000 from Ellen and $5,000 for charity. So $16,800 total. And not having to be wrapped up un this social media addicted world in developmental years. 👏🏽

@@hopeurok True. But he also made more than what his friends made in 2 weeks of working without having a job (with the money from Ellen). Social media is wonderful but it could also be damaging. Besides, he is probably very followed on social media now that he went viral. It will probably become a thing for him now. I don't know.

I am 19. And I never had social media, my friends always asked me how do I survive and I was just like🤷🏾‍♀️, I just live my life. I believe my confidence and self esteem comes from within rather than the approval of others.

It's a good idea, but as a student I can't survive without SM . KZfaq has great teachers , better than most of my HS teachers. But do what you think is the best .

I am currently 17 and I do not have social media unless you count KZfaq. I definitely felt when he said he was several steps behind trends and trends moving onto the next one once he you knew about them, and when he was talking about different slang words and not really knowing how to use them, but just having to rely on context clues.

I can definitely relate to this guy.I also had my first smart phone at 16 and my first social media account at 18 and deleted it 6 months later because of the harm it caused me. I didn't know trends until a year later.People would always laugh,in a joking way, because I would either do the trends wrong like the dab or minsinterpret it.But I really appreciate what my mum did till this day.
