A playthrough of Konami's 1991 license-based action game for the Nintendo Game Boy, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: Back from the Sewers.
Played through on the normal difficulty level.
About a year after the release of the excellent Fall of the Foot Clan ( • Teenage Mutant Ninja T... ), Konami brought the Turtles back to Nintendo's handheld for an encore performance, just in time for the 1991 holiday season.
Shredder, Krang, and all of their minions from Dimension X are again running amok in New York, and as the song says, these Turtle boys don't cut 'em no slack.
There are six lengthy stages for our amphibian heroes to battle through this time around, and unlike in Fall of the Foot Clan, your choice of turtle has an impact on the gameplay since they all differ slightly from one another in their attack range and speed.
The structure of the game is similar, but there are a few key differences. The levels are larger and better varied: though you still walk to the right as you flail your weapon at anything and everything that moves, there are a few open areas with multiple paths, and a couple of areas (like the autoscrolling skateboard stage and the elevator ride) even go so far as to shift the game into a 2.5D perspective that gives the playfield a sense of depth akin to that found in the TMNT arcade games.
The controls are tight, too. They feel about the same as they did in Fall of the Foot Clan, but the shuriken toss has now been replaced with a slide maneuver that can be used to attack or to evade airborne enemies.
Back from the Sewers looks and sounds fantastic, easily surpassing already excellent presentation of the first game. The benefits of shipping on a two-megabit cartridge (twice the size of the first and third GB TMNT games!) are immediately obvious. The clear snippets of digitized speech sprinkled throughout are a rare treat for a Game Boy game, and the graphics are a big upgrade. The character and enemy sprites are impressively large, the animation is smoother, and the backdrops are more complex - it looks much better than the average NES game despite the low resolution and lack of color. The art style is a bit awkward and never quite manages to nail the look of the comic or the cartoon, but the graphics turned a lot of heads in 1991.
The game isn't terribly difficult overall, though it is a fair bit more challenging than Fall of the Foot Clan when you play at the normal difficulty level. It has its frustrating moments when it'll relentlessly pelt you with attacks from off-screen or when the action becomes so busy that you can barely tell what's going on. It's still quite reasonable most of the time, but I prefer the flow and feel of Fall of the Foot Clan.
That's not to say that Back From the Sewers isn't still a lot of fun, though. If you were a fan of Fall of the Foot Clan, it's probably safe to assume that you'll enjoy this one too when it's re-released as part of the upcoming Cowabunga Collection.
PIZZA TIME!

I couldn't help laughing and or imitating the scragglized speech every time a turtle just STOPPED progressing in order to have pizza time. It seems that on only two or three occasions there was NOT time for pizza time.

As a kid my dad would take me with him to work sometimes where he did some maintenance stuff in the underground tunnels of D.C. I had this game and was playing in places that legit felt like what you’d imagine the turtles world was like. Good memories. …also I really wish the Cowabunga collection kept the green screen instead of the black and gray we got

I bet this looks ridiculous for the younger audience and they roll their eyes and call it shit. Yes, there are more sophisticated games now. However, when I was 10 years old, this came out and I played it all summer long till I managed to play it through. I think for us older guys, it has a sentimental value. Trust me, youngsters, in 30 years kids will roll their eyes over the animation of your games today. Don't take yourself too serious and be aware of your own nostalgia. ;)

Thank you for posting this, this definitely brings back wonderful memories. I got this game on the original game boy just like what you see here when it came out in 91. I now can play it on the cowabunga collection with the tweakable option to display it in different color palettes. I wish we could play a version in full color though. still, a super fun game regardless of which version you play.

What's neat woth the original Gameboy green screen is to make up for lack of colour the pixels and how they were creativevly used actually made the sprites etc nicer then even on the colour Sega Game Gear in some ways. IMO

Even though the blurring on it sucks, I agree. I always thought of it as the gaming equivalent of those old green and amber monochrome monitors. They always looked so cool showing graphics.

A very solid follow up entry to the previous game boy outing. Although it is more challenging, boss fights especially, and art can be a bit awkward at times. You can get used to it in no time though. Ofc, we are all excited for the next three games coming up after this one, because we'll be into a special ride and those games are near perfection putting the turtles at their prime. Still, a this is very worthy game to play overall. Pizza Time!

The voice samples clarity are insanely impressive for the gameboy, not to mention the animation leads to this game feeling like it has a LOT of personality. But in every other aspect I would say this game is extremely frustrating. Sluggish controls, gigantic hurt boxes, animation that impede on your reaction time, as well as a plethora of cheap shots and beginner traps. Its a very technically impressive game, but as a game to actually play...I think its just not fun.

Leonardo, come ON! You are supposed to be the RESPONSIBLE ninja turtle. JUST because you FOUND a pizza in the TECHNODROME does NOT make it pizza time! It is one thing to eat a pizza hidden in sewage in stage 4 because you've been living in it and i guess are immune, but technodrome pizza is probably a trap!
