Well this technically is canonically how they would be as teenagers. Its from some sort of memory episode and this specific part was when they were reminiscing about how they once sped up time and became teenagers. When they did, they decided to give up their superhero lives and just lived as normal teenage girls. (Or moreover, how teenage girls were decided at the time)

A lot of people are mad about butter cups design as a teenager but I feel like it made sense because as a kid it’s common to be a tomboy, and when you grow up become more feminine. So I feel like buttercup design made some sort of sense. Not trying to say that’s for everyone though.
