Tegus are big lizards and require lots of space to roam and explore! Remember bigger is always better, when it comes to adult enclosure size. Lets talk about the key points of how to house these amazing creatures. We cover topics like hides, platforms and decor to put in the enclosure!
We also talk about the different setups for hatchling, juvenile and adult enclosures.
During this video we touched briefly on this topic but I wanted to provide more information. Black and white / Red Tegus are from tropical habitats which is a humid environment. Repti-bark and soil (reptile) is the best thing to use! It holds humidity well, looks good and is completely safe to use! Sand is NOT a good substrate to use.

Your tanks are such an inspiration! I have a unexpected Tegu as of last week. I'm in the process of building an iguana cage which resembles your tank to the right! You're really something

Great cage. I'd put a nice backdrop in it. Perhaps a jungle type, or something to match the interior.

What did you make the basking platform and the hide from? Looks great. Still trying to decide which way I want to build my cage. I'm thinking of going 8×4×4 for my monitor in a year or so. What wood did you use? I'm looking to use melamine just not sure if 3/4 or half wood be best.

3/4'' plywood is heavy. I use 3/8'' plywood on all my cages it's strong and light weight!

@@rayellis1811 Not sure. I decided 8×4×6 1/2 plywood due to melamine being way more weight. I've looked at doing foam insulation board then grouting for hide and basking. May just go with pvc or making one with scrap plywood just to make it easier to take out I needed for any reason. Just waiting for the weather to warm up so I can start the build and be able to paint/waterproof.

Great video! I have done hours upon hours of research on these guys and I just got my first baby a month ago. He did go down for brumation which makes me super sad. Question: is cypress mulch a good substrate because some people say its bad? Anyway thanks for this information!

Firstly, thank you for watching! I have used cypress mulch with Bowser before, and I never heard of that being a problem! It's a good substrate to use, so don't worry. Although, with hatchlings I would use reptile soil because of how well it keeps humidity and great for digging. Brumation is a natural part of tegu's life, so don't be sad!

Thats up to you. I provide a large cave for him to retreat into which is perfect for adults. But, as they age they have more confidence to be out more!

Depends on their age: for a hatchling, 40 gallon. for an adult 6 foot by 4 foot.
