In my mind, I always like to think that 4KIDS bought the license to One Piece without actually watching it beforehand. They just saw some promotional material for it and thought that it was just some kiddy stereotypical pirate anime cartoon and bought it immediately, only to realize the HUGE mistake they made when trying to localize it. I always did wonder how long 4KIDS intended to keep dubbing One Piece after all the crazy shit they had to write around and censor.

I rather think they got it in some kind of large deal and didn't know what to make of it. One Piece is a bit of a contradiction which is one of it's major strengths. It's silly and cartoonish yet also dark and serious. However that put 4Kids in a bit of a dilemma. Since it was too dark and violent for kids but too silly and cartoonish for adults.

you know, when I think about the scene, and what would have happened if luffy wouldn't have been saved by shanks and died, I wonder what would have happened when garp showed up to visit. imagine the horror there would be on the face of those badits when all of a sudden garp would blow up their base with his fist and then just rekt them all. that could have been fun to watch.

I do feel the early parts of one piece actually were harsher than the later ones. Especially when the red hair pirates demonstrate their ruthlessness in being able to kill someone without hesitation or regret and that is treated as a good thing.

1:18:40 I do think that does make you appreciate just how diverse the warlords really are. Oda could have just made them all clones of Mihawk since he is the only character he had firmly in his head before starting. However he made them all extremely different from each other. With unique designs, backstories, goals, power levels and attitudes.

@@SentientPotatoXIII Indeed. One character that does ring alarm bells with me is Rocks though. I really hope he won't be revived or if he is it isn't a huge thing. I really hate it in anime when like half of the show is building up the main villain but then at the 11th hour he suddenly get's sidelined for another dude. Blackbeard has been build up perfectly as the evil counterpart of Luffy. One who can serve as both a rival and a villain. I really want the final battle to be between Luffy and Blackbeard. I don't want Rocks bursting in at the last minute and stealing the show. It also would just go against the whole theme of inheritance that One Piece has. Luffy is the inheritor of Roger's will and Blackbeard the inheritor of Rock's will. I really like that but it should remain that. I want to know more about Rocks but he needs to stay dead.

I was scanning my stuff, someone employee called out to someone and I thought it was me he was talking to, but it wasn’t. My mom was with me, but she was over somewhere else looking at something and I forgot some meat I bagged. We tried to go back and get it, there was some lady where we were and we knew our meat was in her bags, but she kept denying it and we didn’t get it back. My mom hopes the lady choked on that meat.

Thanks for uploading these videos. I first saw One Piece on a special channel segment called Miguzi, which also played other shows I liked like Yugioh and Code Lyoko. Years later I found One Piece again on Hulu and instantly knew it was different because even though I didn’t remember the show so much, I know the opening song was not the one I remember. I started watching One Piece seriously last year when it came on Netflix. I’m at episode 160 something and I fully agree, the Funimation is way way way better than the 4Kids one, but it’s still enjoyable to watch how I first encountered One Piece and to laugh at some of the dumb edits and dialogue.

I do like how One Piece starts off so slow. They don't just rush through. Luffy starts out with nothing and it's a decent while till he get's his ship and his pirate crew. Also the scale is really small; The warlords are one of the factions of the world and they are going to fight a mere henchmen of a warlord. So they start at the bottom. It's the same with the Yonko. Even though they were introduced around chapter 400 they are still significantly stronger than any of the protagonists.

A lot forshadowing, introduction and setup for Nami's skills and motivation in the later series: 11:38 She reads weather and later uses it's power (got to weatheria, even got Zeus a cloud in the last arc) as a weapon 1:00:08 predecessor of the clima tact/art of weather x'D But oh god, watching these dubs made me cringe (poor Shanks, poor Sanji) and I think I'm greatful to grown up with the German version (with good music x'D). But I like Zoro, ehem, Zolos voice here x'D The good thing: I really like your streams very much, because you made them with so enjoyable. Good job!

I think that Arlong's bounty is lower than it should be sort of like Kuro for different reasons. Kuro kept his still being alive under raps on his own, but Arlong paid his way so the higher ups don't really know what was going on. He bounty was probably stuck at 20 million because of that.

Its still crazy to me to realize that I started reading Shonen Jump/One Piece since Don Krieg. I wanted to catch up, so i thought, "Hey! It airs on 4kids! What a great way to catch up on the beginning of the series.....what a mistake that was. Still appreciate the 4kids version for not introducing me, but for allowing me the opportunity to search for a better version of the anime.
