SMS delivery issues are a big thing in certain areas, especially southeast asia, this program is probably an attempt at routing the messages internally through the carriers rather than relying on an international external service to get there which is very unreliable, just 5 years ago it was common to wait a couple minutes for an SMS to arrive even in the US and western Europe. sounds like an awful idea in practice though, especially since it gives someone both your phone number and auth code

lack of end-to-end encryption, not total encryption. which means, your isp won't see your data but telegram will be able to see the messages you send in chats. btw, group chats aren't end-to-end encrypted to prevent abuse. if they did people could literally be selling child porn in channels and no one would be able to report them

Not surprised at all by the Telegram thing. I never understood why so many people believe its secure and private. Most messages aren't E2E encrypted so sit there on the servers just waiting to be backdoored (if it hasn't already). Shame that even with the Facebook news, basically nobody will leave the platforms as there couldn't possibly be any other way to stay in touch with friends /s

Even though it has no E2E tg has developed trust, by tgs T&C they never share group chats and personal chats with anyone, not even the government, and nobody can report or shut down those chats. So many protests and movements take their communication via tg. Again, it rises many illegal systems within tg as well.

2:28 or 5 cents for UK numbers, and they want you to allow them to use your phone to sent up to 100 sms a month, so $0.05x100 =$5 , so not really getting premium for FREE then, just getting it for the NORMAL price, but opening yourself up to a whole lot more potential hassle, might as well spend the $5 on premium and NOT have the issues.

Most phone contracts include a number of free SMS, sometimes up to unlimited. If you have one of those contracts it won't cost you money. However, as mentioned in the video, hackers are known to use premium phone numbers with extra cost, which wouldn't be included in your plan. These SMS can cost up to 5 pounds, so we're talking here about a fraud of up to 500 pounds per month.

I'm a former member of Telegram's TSF (their volunteer support force) and to this day I cannot recommend Matrix any less over Telegram. It does basically everything Telegram does, but decentralized (yet without the issues of P2P).

All they have to do is stick to US law at a minimum , then any other country's law they operate in. Are they unable to do that? It's been revealed in 2022 that EU nations like France and Spain were employing the services of a certain middle eastern ethnostate to illegally surveil their domestic independence movements (Basque and Catalans respectively). in some pro-censorship countires (like Iran) the government bans 3rd party companies that send login SMS for some apps (Telegram, Facebook, Instagram, etc). It doesn't happen all the time, but it definitly happens. This is a solution for this issue, however a really stupid one!

Telegram decentralizing the SMS sending is probably to help some of the pressure they get from governments and special interest groups. They typically go after the 3rd party providers (hosting, payment, etc) to harm the service and get them to comply with demands.

What's wrong with revealing your phone number to arbitrary people if it's not in conjunction with any other personal info, though? Like, they could equally easily use a random phone number for whatever malicious actions they could do to you. The fact that "someone has this phone number" doesn't violate your privacy, and just like "someone is called Bob". What would be a violation is if the link between the two was revealed, i.e. this "phone number belongs to someone named Bob". But this doesn't seem to be the case. The second issue is more relevant, though.

It does, because it creates a potential attack vector and because your data can be linked across services. Also it's just plain annoying, you'll keep getting scam calls and scam messages.

@@DMSBrian24 No, that's exactly my point: no link between your phone number and any other data is established. (Besides the fact that you are a telegram user. However, it can already be identified from the phone number anyway via telegram's interaction with contacts). And why would scammers bother calling you specifically, over any other random phone number they could type in? The only potential concern here would be auth code recipients texting you back with questions, or perhaps even trying to prank you out of boredom, and while that would absolutely be an issue, it has nothing to do with privacy.

You know, a good option to reduce SMS costs for MFA would be to not use SMS, instead using TOTP codes on a phone app, or a yubikey (U2F NOT the password-less passkeys, same math but more U2F is more private and if a usb token is lost, attackers don't know which accounts it works on).

I remember seeing the price of the newer Raspberry pi's, the 4+5 and thinking they were expensive, not for a KIT, just the actual Pi, I mean I remember ordering the original Pi* in a KIT, that came with the Pi, a CASE, A Power Supply, Preloaded Raspbian on an SD card for £46.98. Would of been ~£22 for just the Pi. Also got a Raspberry Pi Zero for £3.82 The BASE 4GB Raspberry Pi 5 is £58.50 WITHOUT a case/power supply/SD Card or ANYTHING ELSE. So I guess their " we’re very attached to $35 as our highest price point." went out the window. *Well not the original, but a Model 1 Raspberry Pi (B with 512MB RAM I think)

Wait a second... Doesn't this Telegram experiment have potential to reveal ANY phone number of logging in user? I mean if my phone sends the message, what prevents me from snooping on my text messages tab and checking who I just sent message to? Come to think of it, couldn't I just take the code I sent and act as MITM to login his account? Isn't this technically just Telegram willingly opening up all their accounts for MITM attack in order to save some money?

Facebook and Meta in general, are truly evil. Had a discussion with a work colleague about storage containers, and within hours, adds for storage containers popped up on my feed. Never have I searched for said topic, nor have I ever given permission to Facebook for the use of my camera and microphone. Deleted all my Meta accounts and removed apps and all cookies.

Actually, Telegram is totally honest in the reliability thing. Some countries like Iran where I live have restricted getting text messages from specific numbers that are linked to apps like Telegram, Meta, or ... This actually helps us to log in easier (which is still unsafe tho)

Sending up to 100 text messages a month to random people all over the world? That is gonna cost a LOT of money on phone topup. Texting people outside the country you live in costs a lot unless you both happen to have Android while using Google Messages and have RCS enabled Which is a combo thats not likely, especially in the US where most people use iMessage and Whatsapp

2:18 No this, for once, isn't about money. Countries like china and iran are used to blocking services that send OTPs for facebook, telegram etc. The privacy risks are negligible considering this feature is almost guaranteeing that you'll never be locked out of you account even during a protest (which leads to a total communication blackout).

You'd be correct if the system truly was 'peer to peer', but it's not. An SMS has to be routed through a cell carrier, regardless of whether the recipient is sitting right next to you. SMS's aren't end-to-end-encrypted

@@Seytonic- The Telegram app should be able to "read" the user's phone number through the API of Android or iOS, therefore no OTP is needed to be sent and received for verification. They could block users based on their number alone if they try to create multiple accounts from the same device. What do you think?

Clickbait! It's not a feature that's available to everyone. It's actually not that dumb, from an economic perspective. Why pay for SMS if many users of the app can send SMS for free. You can choose only to send SMS to numbers in your own country. You could use a secondary phone number as part of multi-SIM to circumvent the privacy issue. Or simply use a secondary phone number for important stuff.

I did point out that it's only available in certain regions to Android users only. The ToS make you agree to "international SMS charges that may apply from time to time", so this doesn't seem to be limited to your country only.

I wonder if they thought about the person signing up for free just might be a middle man attacker and they are just sending info straight to the middle man, meaning the middle man can detect and change the info however they want or use the info themselves to break into people's account. Did they just sit in a meeting and brainstorm who could come up with the worst idea to try to save money? lol It's funny how everyone is mostly worried about the guy in the middle getting their privacy breached when it's worse than that.
