In this episode, first, the wife and I scout out (recon) a job after our Q&A tow. This one will prove to be quite the challenge. A decent sized telehandler, shooter-boom, lull, crab-walking forklift, ends up frozen into a deep hole and it will not start and run to help break the suction. We have difficult working conditions, to say the least, and no easy access to the machine. We are at the end of our rope, quite literally. This should be interesting. Will we be able to get it out with the equipment we have available? Can we even access the area?? Stick around to find out!!! I hope you all enjoy this video!!! Thanks for watching and God bless!!!
Again, I wish to thank everyone who has expressed their prayers and/or condolences for the death of my Dad. The outpouring of support from my viewers has been tremendous and has helped in this difficult time. May God bless each and every one of you. Also, thank you for your patience. I am still making videos and trying to get to the new normal without Dad. I will continue to perform jobs and create videos, as long as God allows. Things will be different moving forward. I have to trust that God will guide me and this channel.
Again, a very special thank you to all my viewers, family, and friends who having taken the time to show their support. May God bless and protect you all!!!

I spent 40+ years in the auto and truck industry and delt with a lot of recovery drivers and no one is nicer to their employees than you. I also appreciate the cleaness of the language which is so nice this day and time. I have been around wrecker drivers that dont care what they say in front of women and children. I band one driver from towing anything to our shop because of the language. To top that off the company quit towing vehicles for us because he did t see anything wrong with his driver cussing all the time. Some other shops followed suite and that company went out of business. Thank you, Ron for yourself respect and your employees respect for your customers.

Hi, I'm retired from the construction industry. I drove a lowboy moving from small to super size ( mining equipment ) and I had to operate every thing I moved. I made a lot of recovery over the years always with other equipment. I offer 2 options for you. No. 1 you already mentioned a skid steer with a winch box, a good option, but limited because of size, also skid steers are not cheap even for a good used one. Option 2 a surplus military 5 ton 6x6. In the service saw them in service in a far off mud hole a long time ago. They have great winching capabilities and good ones are reasonably priced and not only for off road recoveries. Been watching for several years now and really like your jobs and work ethics, safety no. 1.

I apologize Ron but this one took it out of me. I had to go eat lunch and take a nap I was so tired. Then I came back and you started throwing those 4 letter words around. Well done to say the least! I haven't commented for awhile, but had to commend you on this one ... Once again, every element and factor against a successful recovery. But with ingenuity, the right equipment and making slow, precise, and using a well thought-out method, success. A dead machine, sucked into the mud ... not to mention distance and angle .... Only experience, with God giving the wisdom, another seemingly impossible job accomplished. Kudos! God's continued Blessings to you all.

Hey Ron, this has nothing to with the video but I just wanted to say thanks for all the info you've given over the years. Just had to help a tractor trailer out of a loading dock that was covered in ice, snow and slush. Another driver offered to pull him out but didn't know exactly what to latch onto. I grabbed some chain (double lined cause I wasn't 100% confident in a single line but had no other option) , hooked them both up. Wham bam, out he comes. I'm just a measly retail worker too, not even in receiving lol

I feel the same way. Learn everything you can just in case even if you think you'll never need it because one fine day you just might find yourself to be the only person on hand with the right bit of knowledge to get somebody out of a jam. Never needed anything I learned from Mr. Pratt (so far!), but one day some years back a co-worker locked his keys in his car. I went to our shop, grabbed a piece of sheet metal and bent it into a Slim Jim based on what I'd seen in another recovery. It worked and I made a friend.

Machine has a leveling system on it. It probably tried to level itself out while it was in the hole and that’s the position the leveling system was in when the machine was shut off. Since it wasn’t running when they pulled it out the axles stayed where they was. It’ll level out when they get it running again.

The axle tilt hydraulic cylinders were on opposite corners and have pilot check valves. They likely had the axles wildly tilted when it got shut off. You cannot level them until you have hydraulic pressure again.

I often watch your videos and the solution I come up with based on the information I have in the video, I often come up with a (sometimes drastically) different solution than you. For example; I'd have run a sling from the 4×4 to the high side tire to put down pressure on it while putting up pressure on the low side tire to help keep it from rolling and break suction easier. Just goes to show there's multiple solutions to most puzzles. :)

I remember a safety poster. It said "Always use standard crane signals." The graphic was of a guy making motions, in front of a very confused looking crane (bird). Before portable radios and two man crews, railroads relied on hand signals. Long distances or around curves, one or more in the crew had to stand where they could relay signals. Large flags, if needed, by day. Lanterns by night, if visibility was really bad you used a fusee (like a road flare). If sight of the field man was lost, it was all stop.

I worked at a place once and we had almost this exact situation occur. Telehandler slipped into a drainage ditch about 5ft deep and was leaning at a severe angle looked like it was about to turn over. Machine would not run because of the extreme angle made all the fuel go to one side of the fuel tank and it couldn't pick up fuel. They had a 950 cat wheel loader we hooked onto it and didn't budge it. They also had a 988 cat and an old Letourne wheel loader that was bigger than the 988. I think it weighed almost 100,00lbs, we hooked it onto the telehandler with a big cable and out she came. It takes a lot of force to move something that weighs over 30,000lbs and is stuck and all the wheels are locked!

I learned today that those holes in the machine you pulled out have a use. And those big shackles are amazing. I'm learning alot about towing angles through the videos. The other red shackle was on the truck that's why he couldn't find it. But, with all your spare parts it's nice to have so many options. The color coding is helpful too, I'm guessing. Ok, till tomorrow. Thank you. You guys did a good job.

It never ceases to impress me how respectful and courteous you are to ALL your people, and what a good teacher you are. Not only do you instruct what to do, but you also always take the time, even when under pressure to explain WHY things are to be done that way. Have you ever considered a winch on a hitch for the 2" receiver (for the Dodge)?
@RonPratt

We do have a winch wired up and ready in the bed of the truck. It takes two people to unload it and move it down to the hitch, but we do have one. That way we have a winch on the front and on the rear. Comes in very handy at times. Thanks for watching and God bless.

I wanted both cables from the beginning, but I needed enough to double back and "marry" the cables like we did towards the end. I had wanted to do that from the very beginning, but we couldn't get close enough. Thanks for watching and God bless.

@@RonPratt Would it have been possible to use a second blue strap or a chain between the telehandler and the snatch block to get the block a few feet further forward which would be all you need assuming blue and white had the same length cables? I appreciate that you cannot fishpole with it, but any other reason for not using the drag winch? Or is it a shorter cable or less pulling power than the boom winches? John in London England

Nice Job guys...! I always try to look or find the positive out of every situation and the positive on this one guy imo is you had no traffic whizzing by as you worked... It sure was a muddy mess for ya but as Ron detailed it out... " Inch by inch and steady as you go"... gets the job done… I really like Kenny and his positive enthusiastic work ethic he always displays... You guys work well together...! And Ron with your singing... LOL "Put you left cable in, put you right cable out" LOL I like your humor Ron... made me laugh... Love the “Fish Pole method too…. Gotta do what you gotta do… That was a good workout for you too Ron…! As you said… Don’t need to go to the gym today… Glad you're both ok & safe… a little muddy but safe and unharmed...!👍👍

Great Video! I kept waiting for you to redirect off one of their pieces of equipment to get a straight pull. Nice to see you and Kenny get a free cardio workout with no danger of passing traffic or ARC nemesis. I feel bad for the shop guys. Lots of cleaning and lubing to do before that job is done. Wife said I spent too much time on Pratt Vision today! LOL

Your comment about bringing extra equipment can be summed up in the following statement. And it works for alot of different jobs/situations. "It is better to be looking at it, than looking for it"

Nice work between you and Kenny. I found it funny how you wished you had a skid steer with a winch. Hal from Sumter Wrecker has one of those and he wishes he could have a rotator.. As you both have said you have to use what you got. My old friend Joe who had an Italian accent sounded so funny when he said that. It was more Lile I usre whata I gotta. Enjoy the weekend. Work smarter not harder and be safe.
