Clarence: "Your brother, Harry Bailey, broke through the ice and was drowned at the age of nine." George Bailey: "That's a lie! Harry Bailey went to war! He got the Congressional Medal of Honor! He saved the lives of every man on that transport!" Clarence: "Every man on that transport died. Harry wasn't there to save them, because you weren't there to save Harry.” I get a lump in my throat every time I see that scene.

Re “I wish I had a million dollars….Hot Dog!” : George is making a wish and them using an old fashioned tabletop cigar lighter. Table top lighters for cigars and cigarettes were once common and would often take multiple tries to get it to flame to light. In the pilot episode of Bewitched there was a whole gag in which Samantha makes a coffee table lighter in the honeymoon sweet successfully light in an attempt to prove to her husband that she is in fact a witch. So the idea here seems to be that George and probably the other kids in Bedford Falls will make a wish before striking the big lighter at Gower’s Drug Store and if it actually works and lights the wish is supposed to come true.

I absolutely love this movie. James Stewart was suffering from PTSD after returning from WWII (He was a decorated combat pilot and colonel in the Army Air Corps). Lionel Barrymore convinced him to make this film, hoping it would help heal some of his trauma. Also, when Mary threw the rock at the house, Donna Reed actually was the one throwing the rock and she made it on the first throw. She had played softball in high school.

don't feel bad, I always cry at the end to! I love this movie so much, not only because it's such a great movie, but I always think of my beloved Grandmother, bless her heart and RIP, because this was her favorite movie! what I have to say is a true story and I actually have proof of it too! back then James Stewart was nominated for best actor for his role in this film, but unfortunately he didn't win it! my Grandma was so outraged by that, she and her girlfriends made him a makeshift Oscar trophy and actually drove up to his house one morning, back when that was possible compared to today's day and age with Hollywood stars who have tight security lol, and she presented it to him! James Stewart was so moved by my Grandma's support and appreciation, he invited her in for a cup of coffee and since then they became good friends! I have pictures of my Grandma with the trophy and of James Stewart's home at the time, so that's how I know the story is true, crazy isn't it lol! plus my Grandma was friends with a few stars from Hollywood's golden age including Joan Crawford, not that I expect you to know that name lol! but yes, this movie is a classic, it's got a strong message, great cast, great acting, and a traditional Christmas movie to watch every year! really enjoyed this reaction/review, really warms my heart that you love this movie! can't wait to see more reviews! @@moviefanatic22 Wow!! Great story!! Thanks for sharing. I love Jimmy Stewart. This film is heart rending and beautiful because it is filled with truths about family, love, romance and the human condition. It’s about the reality of faith, hope and reconciliation. It highlights the fact that the greatest things about reality are those things that we can not “prove” using a strictly reductive materialism. Because the fact is that reality and existence and in particular the qualities of experience such as empathy, compassion, altruism, morals, ethics, meaning, purpose and ultimately love are not made of “matter” they are made of what matters. This is definitely my favourite movie in this genre. I also cried at the part where he saves the Chemist whos son had just died. The part where he sees what reality would be like without him has parallels with Charles Dickens (The Christmas Carol) and it is a very unnerving metaphor for Hell. That is a great allegory for the complete rejection of love and the inevitable despair, anger and hatred, the splitting of the soul. The fact is that we all have intrinsic value and have the power to change the future by the choices we make in the present. The belief that value is extrinsic is represented and personified by the evil villain Potter. The ending is just beautiful and leaves you sobbing with Joy. Movie magic!! Would love to see a review of (To Kill a Mocking Bird), with Gregory Peck or (Alls quiet on the Western front) the original version. All the best to you and your family and keep safe ❤️

People losing their jobs, families hating each other, people being isolated and alone. The New Year is going to be better. We just need to have faith and restore faith in people. It's a Masterpiece Film of reflecting and appreciate what you have and be grateful for the people who have help. A positive Redemption story v.s. Christmas Carol which is a little bit darker. The scene at the bar was kinda real. Jimmy had just got back from WWII months before. As a B-24 pilot and later squadron ops officer, then squadron commander, then group ops officer, he was the real deal. Stressful bombing missions over Europe (in the days before they got fighter escort), took its toll. He did real well as a leader as stated by regular army air corps people. Not just some Hollywood schmuck in a uniform. The cost was long term post war stress. Great reaction. Have a great New Year.

Director Frank Capra struck gold with every film he did in the 1930's, went off and served in WWII by making documentary movies for the War Department and this like James Stewart was his return to Hollywood movies. Liberty Films was his production company that he formed to give himself more control over his own films. It did not work out so he went back to making movies for the big studios but the studios kept butting in and Capra made only a small handful of movies till he retired in the early 60's.

Of course it's the greatest movie ever made. And if it made you cry now, every time you watch it in the future you will cry more and more... Watching you cry made me cry. Wishing you a wonderful holiday season and hope you have a very Happy New Year! Thanks for all the joy you've brought me and others in watching you share your feelings, ideas, and emotions with the rest of us. The "Boring Stuff" is what life is really about. It's about relationships, not "things." Or at least it was until the last few decades. Maybe we can get some of that back? One reason the film continues to resonate is because we wish THIS was how people acted in real life... One of my best friends was close to Jimmy, and even played his wife on his TV series, and she said he was as magnificent in real life as he often appeared in the movies. She said she learned more about acting from watching him just sitting in a scene, without dialogue, than anything else she ever did, and she was one superb actor!

Utterly. Adorable. That's what this reaction is. It is so very true what you said about kindness! Once while traveling from your ancestral home of Canada ;) to Utah with friends, we got to Yellowstone Park (your old stomping ground) I had been driving for hours, it was late, and I was tired. The staff was dealing with some irate patrons. Not one of the "customers" was kind or even considerate. Then came my turn. They said that everything in the Park was full. I said, "Not a problem! I understand completely! You have a great rest of your evening!" I sat down on a couch in the lobby to wait for friends in the gift shop. A lady came up to me and whispered that a cabin had just become available, and since I was the only one who was nice, they decided they were giving it to me. Well Kay, we NOW know who your ideal man is! George Bailey! (Potential suitors take note ;)

The drugstore had a box on the counter that was an unreliable cigarette lighter. George and his friends would make a wish and if the machine worked at that moment they believed that the wish would come true.

Jimmy Stewart like most folks in WWII was drafted, but unlike many actors and athletes, he avoided doing token publicity service, flew bombers, the service with the highest casualty rate. He made it thru and stayed in the Air Force Reserves becoming a brigadier general.

2:05. "What is that thing? I've always wondered." It's a lighter for cigars and cigarettes. The gamble is whether it will make a flame the first time you try it. The kids turned this into a predictor of whether your wish will come true.

One that I can watch even more often is 1944's "I'll Be Seeing You." It shows the wartime shortages and labor adjustments around its edges, mainly near the beginning, and deals with some societal taboos that were very strong at the time.

@ 1:04 Yes he was a great director and two other of his you will enjoy "Mr. Smith Goes To Washington" (1939) also starring Jimmy Stewart, and "Meet John Doe" (1941) with Gary Cooper and Barbara Stanwyck. ✌😎

Hard to believe this film wasn't held so highly when it came out, it even ended up in the public domain for a spell. It's a bit overly-sentimental, but I can't deny its effectiveness. Even my cold heart gets a little warmer when watching it. Happy New Year, Kay!

I grew up in the 70s (in NYC) and it was very rarely shown at Christmas time back then. The Bells of St. Mary's and Miracle on 34th Street were the two big holiday films at that time. I first saw It's a Wonderful Life in college, sometime in the early 80s.

To answer your question, if someone committed suicide in the old days, their assets could be confiscated, their insurance policies denied, in some places they could be refused funerals or burials in public cemeteries. The deceased were denied the basic recognition of their humanity that we all deserve in the end, and anyone left behind would be left with a Herculean mess and the Sisyphean task of finding their loved one a crematorium or funeral home that would process them with half their income gone. This, incidentally, is where the term “commit suicide” comes from. Back in those days you were literally committing a crime.

THERE ARE NO LUGGAGE RACKS ON A HEARSE AND THAT'S WHY YOU CAN'T TAKE IT WITH YOU! NO ONE ON THEIR DEATHBED EVER WISHED IF THEY COULD HAVE JUST MADE ONE MORE DOLLAR IN LIFE. THEIR DYING THOUGHTS USUALLY TURN TO FAMILY AND LOVED ONES IN THEIR LIFE!

It was odd for a film of that era to leave the villain unpunished. Here's SNL's take on an alternate ending where Mr. Potter gets his comeuppance: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rN1obNJhxszGYnU.html

It's been raining here since Tuesday, it's Saturday afternoon, in NQ australia, and we are only on the south edge of the cyclone, we had some wind, but not much damge here. The power was off for nearly 24 hours, but it's back, and we didn't lose the freezer's contents so far. Many others are much wotse off. As John Lennon said, life is what happens, when you're busy making other plans. You get more flies with honey than with vinegar, so yes be kind.

The crow was symbolic of the Building & Loan always bring on the verge of death. It was a harbinger of doom. The crow was played by Jimmy the Raven who had quite a career in the movies. He was also in The Wizard of Oz.

"The Crow" was death constantly threatening "The Savings and Loan." As for the crow himself, I think I read recently he was the same crow from "The Scare Crow's" shoulder in "The Wizard of Oz."
