My middle offspring just super bravely told *everyone* they’re gender non-binary and is now going by Alyx. I’m super blown away as I was very very invested in my in-the-closet-bunker regarding my Bi status until I was 38. Just wow, I’m so proud of them! My generation is all fine with it, but my Nana & Ghee (their only great-grandparents) are VERY confused. He’s almost 91, she just turned 88, and they were raised by very “boys do boy stuff, never girl stuff, and vice versa. ANY deviations from traditional norms is cause for bearings and so much church shaming,” people. They’re being as kind as always to my Middle, but I’m getting SO MANY QUESTIONS! Most of which are answered, “I can ask Alyx. I identify as female so I don’t know all the reasons and feeling behind their announcements. The easiest way to explain it is clothes, makeup, nail polish, jewelry, activities, etc don’t have a gender. People like to assign a gender to things, but that’s dumb because they’re just things wo a base gender. You’re fine w my Pre-K son wearing bring red nail polish w gold flakes even tho he’s a he, right? Because it’s just nail polish, it makes him super happy, and who cares if a boy has pretty nail’s ? It’s like that, but for everything.” Anyone who is able to explain this a little better to grandparents in their 90’s is more than welcome to comment and offer advice! My kids are my kids and I’m going to support them no matter what, and so are my grandparents/their great grandparents. No one is going to get shamed, disowned, or sent to any kind of “you’re actually a single gender person you’re just confused,” therapy because that’s an inexcusable way to treat your (or anyone else’s!) offspring. So! If that’s your big contribution to the conversation I *will* blatantly ignore you. Same for anyone asking about my child’s genitalia. When the actual f**k did it become acceptable to ask what is in a child’s (or anyone’s, really) underwear or attempt to determine what gender someone else is in any way?!
@seabirdcj74422 жыл бұрын
1. I think that's a really great way of explaining it, I was very lucky with my parents because they don't really care about whether I do "boy" things or "girl" things (that being said I'm not exactly out I'm kond of just me) and 2. Thank you for supporting your kid, it's so sweet reading things like this where parents/great/grandparents are really trying it really warms my heart 💛
@Jack-er1sc2 жыл бұрын
hear hear! extra parents points for being supportive haha. my only advice (as a trans teen myself) would be to say that they're still the same person they just want to be referred to differently, and that "abnormal" people are surely more interesting. Also if they go down the grammar/plural route, say it's better to be kind than gramatically correct. hope this helps! feel free to ask me any Q's about being trans if there's anything you're uncomfortable asking Alyx or if there's anything they're uncomfortable answering or about binding/packing/tucking safety-wise - although I can't answer any legal questions as I notice you live in the US and I'm british :)

@@Jack-er1sc Thank you! Both for the kinds words and the offer of help ❤️❤️❤️ I want my kids to know I love them for *THEM!* IDC who they love or what they do as long as they are happy with themselves and their lives. They’re the ones that have to live it! Stay safe, healthy, and happy and so will The Momma be 😀 I *will* be using ‘it’s better to be kind that to have correct grammar!’ I’m also lucky Alyx is *very* understanding of his older relatives’ confusion, and as long as someone is honestly trying they don’t mind and will gently correct any mistakes Nana or anyone else makes. The legal situation is very dicey and volatile where we live right now. We are in Texas, which right now is at the literal forefront of stripping queer people and women of their rights. It’s… it’s a scary time to be anything other than a Conservative, southern Baptist/Christian, middle to Ken Connelly aged, white man, and I just know someone married to or fitting that description is going to come at me for saying it, but it’s true!

This is so sad. I'm in multiple trans men groups and there are lots of posts about trans men coming out to their grandma and their grandma saying "you're not a boy, you're just confused, you are a girl and you will always be my grand daughter"

You all inspire me so much. I’m 22 and autistic, pansexual, with severe anxiety living with my parents and despite my pain, I simply can’t bring myself to stand up for myself and what I believe in in front of them. You’re all so much stronger than I am.

My grandparents know.. but they kinda just think it’s like a preference? Like Christmas presents they deadname me etc tbf I hardly think I’ve heard them call me cody? My family is kinda supportive like they aren’t mean but aren’t supportive if u get me? But my grandparents on my moms side don’t do well. My grandad on my dads side is good with my name not my pronouns My aunt on my moms side is bad but my cousins on that side are good my littlest cousin is 7 and she’s always like ‘CODY I WANNA SIT BY CODY’ the second she sees me 🥺 And then my aunt on my dads side is fine with my name to my face but behind my back it’s not the best and then the cousins they don’t understand because I get called one name to my face and one behind my back? And one of my cousins is very rude, I don’t think he means to but like I took him to the boys toilet since I wasn’t going to the toilet and I can pass so I stood there while he did his buisness but he was like ‘YOUR A GILR’ ‘YOU CANT GO IN THERE’ and then at random moment when we’re with people and I’m trying to pass he’s like ‘you’ll never be a real boy’ and then when we went skiing once they asked our names I said cody since that’s what my mom signed me in with but he goes ‘AcCuALlY HeR nAmE uSeD tO bE _____’

I only told my grandmother (dad's side) about my sexuality, to which she responded "I won't let what I believe (religion) get in the way of my family." I am I think what is called Genderfluid I usually just switch between she/her and he/him but usually dislike being seen as a girl (born female). My dad doesn't believe in it when I told him so he wasn't going to start saying he instead of she, same with my mom. My other grandmother (mom's side) I'm not so sure. I get when it's hard to adjust to but my parents just flat out did not want to try
