Snorre and the Thorns demos seems like the definition of the sound. Combined with Euronymous' riffs and the low-fi production sound from Burzum and Darkthrone etc. Culminating in DMDS. Great vid Teloch! Love those 'reverse chords' or whatever they are called, especially on tracks like Throne of Time and VI.Sec..

Well, the fathers of tremolo picking is Quorthon and Euronymous within the black metal scene. Snorre came afterwads, learnt it from Euronymous and added some evilness in it. As for the low-fi production, it didn't start with Darkthrone and Burzum. Mayhem had already used it in 1986 on Pure Fucking Armageddon. Let's not forget Master's Hammer, Samael and of course, Bathory too. It's fair to say that before Mayhem's live shows in Norway and in Leipzig no one really knew what black metal was since death metal was the trend, then Euronymous declared war on death metal. This is a pivotal moment in the history of Norwegian metal, suddenly all Norwegian death metal bands turned into black metal bands according to Euronymous' own definition of black metal, the rest is history.

Thank you for guiding the next generation of black metal creators. I really mean it, its a great community to be apart of. If you have time, could you do a similar tutorial video about writing songs specifically? How to put a song together, connecting intros to chorus to bridge, fitting lyrics to melodies, etc. I read you basically did all the writing of Esoteric Warfare and writing is something I struggle with, lyrics and music. Hail from Zurich.

@MOsKOn that's a good analogy. You don't need sheet music. It's possible to speak without reading, but you do need to know what words mean. I taught myself music theory but that's really hard to do. Just learn the basics and use those as ways to explore different sounds. He says in black metal to only use minor chords but you can use major chords and still sound evil. Just gotta know what to do.

It's like training of shaman or monk, when you learn stuff like music- or color theory. You need to restric yourself in beginning, but then you start to see everything differently. In the end, there is no rules nor even quidelines. You are back at the starting point, but now your feelings translate directly into completely non-verbal language.

You don’t have to act so cocky man, I may be a christian “and I listen to black metal” yes, but I also appreciate the fact that the bible says all music is good. What he does on guitar may not be good when it comes to “music theory” and don’t get me wrong that’s very important depending on your style of playing, but it’s a preference man. This is HIS style of playing, not yours. Not learning music theory can make you more creative and not so restricted too. I have learned music theory myself on guitar and it’s important to me because that’s the way I wanted to play. It’s just his style and you have your style. Just try and appreciate the way other ppl interpret music. That’s what music is about

Why do all those professional guitar players love to say they don't know theory? You definitely know some stuff in order to write music. You're just being humble for saying that my man.

Black metal is one of the few genres u can play without theory. Tremolo picked powerchords and whatever dissonant chords u can come up with. Bass mirrors guitar. Double Bass blastbeats.

@@YourFearIsReal i said you can PLAY it without theory. And i dare you to even find a key in most modern black metal. If he knows how to play a minor chord without knowing its functions, construction or harmonization, he doesnt know theory imo.

Ehh I know music theory and I don’t necessarily have to use it. I just play what feels good and use the music theory to write down and explain to others what I wrote. It’s very useful when collaborating with other artists or even sometimes getting out of writers block. Also when I do something that I like I can articulate it in many forms because of my music theory knowledge. It doesn’t break your creativity if you learn it.

Hey I am currently looking for a nice pedal for Metal, that is able to generate the sounds for a lot of Metal genres (especially Black Metal ofcorpse! ;D) and I was wondering if you didnt like the Boss MT-2 because you showed it in the video along with the funny looking guitars, so I thought its also a joke... however others say its a good pedal... can you give me any good advice what kind of pedal I should get? (It doesnt need to be the most expensive since I am not playing any concerts, I just play for myself and some friends and family.) Thanks in advance! Love your music!

Thanks brother :D Im not really using any pedals, using the gain in the amps. But about 20 years ago I used the MT2 and I used that for all sorts of styles, BM, DM and hardcore. Not sure this helped but good luck!
