The rotors are fixed magnetically. Do not ask.
There was no reason for it to be this big. But here it is, a living proof of concept: indeed, you are able to create a 31,6 kiloton SSTO out of stock parts in KSP 1.
CRAFT STATS:
Takeoff weight: 31577 tons
Length: 460.7 meters
Wingspan: 113 meters (134 with Wolfhounds deployed)
Cost: ~16m kredits
Parcount: around 3050
Peak thrust: 336000 kN
Peak vertical thrust: 350000 kN
MUSIC:
• DAREDEVIL - Ace Combat...

@vanlaukaus
@vanlaukaus Жыл бұрын
glad that you enjoyed! sadly, there is a little trick here: the title and the preview say "stock parts SSTO" and not "stock SSTO" for a reason. to be more or less stable this craft needs the Kerbal Joint Reinforcement mod, which, obviously, makes stock wobbly joints much stronger.

@@vanlaukaus Ah I see, I was thinking it was done via autostrut or immense use of struts hidden somewhere. Well, KSP is a great game, but at some points, you need to help it if you want to make something as magnificent as this craft! Keep up the great work!

There are plenty of good comments so I am just going to state the obvious. What is missing from this video is more.... More of the video.... I want twice as long. I want Kerbal cuts showing the kerbals riding up on the ship. I want see like a Pilots prospective flash cut with gauges showing giving the realness to the build and that you actually put this thing into the Kerbin world. I want to see that big @ss thing flying through the debris cloud (if possible) and then trying to get repaired from all the obvious damage lol. Even if there was some wizardry involved this is a very nice looking ship and the attention to detail shows.

The narrative and aethetics are hilarious, but my engineering brain was screaming in anguish about the gravity losses incurred during the initial hover phase on a mix of liquid engines and fan blades, then baffled at the 90 degree rotation to vertical as such a flight profile wouldn't make use of the lifting surfaces, or of the fan blades dominating the center of the craft. Man, these Kerbals must have gotten stupendously wealthy in those intervening years to be able to justify dragging all that dry mass all the way to orbit for the pure vanity of a hover-and-pivot take-off maneuver! And those engines that rotate out are hilarious, but it seems like they could have achieved a faster and more efficient ascent phase had they used those early on for additional thrust. Perhaps they were larger vacuum nozzles, something KSP doesn't really model properly; yeah, that could explain it. Well, entertainment achieved.
@vanlaukaus
@vanlaukaus Жыл бұрын
Eyy, finally some good engineering criticism! First of all, yeah, it is a rather goofy concept even compared to my other spaceplanes. Initially the idea of using massive liftfans was justified by a fact that I'll need, like, a lot of static lifting surfaces to make it fly as a normal plane at low speeds. Instead I decided to decrease the needed partcount by making said lifting surfaces move. It did backfire. Turned out that it is impossible to fly forward faster than 40 m/s with liftfans not locked, hence the need to stop and turn vertically mid-air, and from there questionable decisions started to build up like a snowball. Then there are also stock KSP limitations - and I'm really trying to make everything as stock as possible - so, say, I couldnt even use airbreathing engines to spin the liftfans as there are just no a/b engines powerful enough in stock game. Fortunately or unfortunately, this project has a lot of such compromises. The vacuum engines were indeed specified for, well, vacuum. KSP may not model the entirety of nozzle physics, but those engines have ridiculously small ISP and thrust under atmospheric pressure. This, however, drastically changes in space. And yeah, all the lifting surfaces ended up being needed only for return - and indeed, it is able to glide more or less adequately. Afterall, I'm not disappointed with this thing, as a) it looks more Kerbal than anything I've recently made and b) it compensates the absolute lack of common sense in its design with an ungodly amount of style points. Afterall, we're in KSP, are we not?
@ddopson
@ddopson Жыл бұрын
@@vanlaukaus That's fantastic. I think I enjoyed your response more than the original video. Fascinating to hear that you started out with engineering based ideas and then when they didn't pan out due to Kerbal simulation limits, you Kerbal'd through and added the pivot and vertical ascent.
