This entire album is a tribute to Andrew Wood, the singer for "Mother Love Bone" who died from a drug overdose (was also friend and roommate of Chris Cornell). The band, along with Chris, wrote maybe the best single album of the era, filled with amazing, heartfelt songs, and even got their new singer to duet with Chris on the song "Hunger Strike." Yes, the band went on to be Pearl Jam, Chris continued on with Soundgarden, and the best album of the grunge era was written by a super-group before anyone knew they were super. You need to listen to this entire album, but you should also listen to some "Mother Love Bone", as Andrew Wood was pretty amazing himself. Check out "Stargazer", "Man of Golden Words", and "Chloe Dancer/Crown of Thorns".

If you want more Temple of the Dog, I'd suggest "Say Hello 2 Heaven." For Soundgarden I'd start with "Outshined," that's the song that introduced me to the band way back in '91, and it still hits me just as hard today.

Also Chis and Eddie were neighbors in their apartments when they were starting their careers. Chris lived with Andrew Wood from Mother Love Bone and he died of an overdose at a very young age. Temple of the Dog was a sort of tribute to Chris's best friend. Eddie actually stumbled onto this track because Chris was messing around with it in front of him and he started singing the lower octave notes. Mother Love Bone to Temple of the Dog basically was what founded Pearl Jam. Andrew Wood was honored in the most amazing fashion you ever could be. He literally created a new genre. RIP to all of those legends. Chris is arguably my favorite vocalist of all time at this point, his loss resonated so hard.

As someone born in the mid-late 70s loving the 90s 2000s rock ... Hunger Strike is one of my favorite songs of all time. Chris was amazing. R.I.P. Honestly there were so many amazing bands between the 80s - 2000s that there were a few super special people from. Enjoy your journey!

Something I had forgotten to mention about Hunger Strike in the last video, Chris had originally been trying to do the low notes and couldn't get his voice to go low enough. I think Eddie was watching and he stepped up and did those notes, and the rest is history. And Chris' vocals around the time that Hunger Strike was made involved a lot of belting, which I think is pretty prevalent on almost any song he did on the Badmotorfinger album. "Searching With My Good Eye Closed" is one song from Badmotorfinger that you can find a live performance of on Soundgarden's channel, and some various other performances from the 1992 Paramount Theater concert floating around on KZfaq. Chris has done some duets with other people, but the most notable I can recommend are the songs that he sang with Chester Bennington. They were great friends, and he or Chester showed up at each other's concerts from time to time to sing together. There's a video of him singing "Crawling" with Chester and another where Chester sings "Hunger Strike" with him, and they sing the opposite lyrics (Chris sings Eddie's part and Chester sings Chris' part). Chris is also great at doing any cover he wants to do, like "Nothing Compares 2 U" (there's a version where he and his daughter sing it too).

Chris Cornell and Eddie Vedder were very close. Eddie almost looked at Chris as an older brother. When he died, Eddie was absolutely devastated, and has spoken of still struggling with it. On Pearl Jam’s latest album, Gigaton, the song “Comes Then Goes” is basically all about Chris. Would love to see you dive deeper into PJ, and Eddie’s solo work.

Only a few days after Chris took his own life, I can't remember if Eddie was on a solo tour, or with Pearl Jam, but at a concert he did a solo performance of Black and dedicated it to Chris. You should check it out.

I’ve got a cool story about Eddie Vedder. First I worked for an insurance company back in the day in the special lines field and remember actually speaking to Eddie about his boat policy! He said enjoyed calling instead of his agent! Very down to Earth and later we were able to meet at a Seattle Pearl Jam show so he was able to put a face to the voice on the phone 📱. ILL NEVER FORGET IT! RIP CHRIS CORNELL. The Seattle scene in the early 1990’s is unsurpassed by anything going on today!

I’m so glad you got to hear this. It was such an influential, monumental song when it first came out. Top tip: listen to the soundtrack to the film “Singles”. It is virtually a who’s who of early grunge.

Vedder was virtually unknown when this was made. He was asked by Cornell as a way for the new singer of the new band(now known as Pearl Jam) to fit in with the music family of Seattle. The whole album was a tribute to Andy Wood(one of Cornell's best friends and roommate). Cornell was the voice of my generation and is sadly missed dearly!

So amazing seeing someone discover this masterpiece for the first time. Chris, Eddie, Layne, Kurt and even Scott with STP.... you really cannot go wrong. The rabbit hole of grunge is plentiful. The grunge era was such a gift to all of us. Some may be gone, but the gift of their music continues to deeply touch us to this day.

Great reaction, Aileen. I think your next reaction should be the song "Alive" by Pearl Jam. "Alive" is one of the singles from Pearl Jam's first album, which is called "Ten", and for me its their best song. "Alive" is partially an autobiography of Eddie Vedder. An excerpt of the lyrics talks about when Eddie was a teenager and his mother told him that the man he believed was his father was actually his stepfather and his biological father was dead. He never knew his biological father.

Chris did a version of Nothing Compares 2u that will make you cry. Eddie did a tribute to Chris after he passed that will make you cry even harder. These guys loved each other and Eddie was devastated how things went down with Chris.

When this video came out, Pearl Jam wasn't out yet. I saw this guy with this voice and was immediately in love. Anything from the Temple Of The Dog album is amazing, but especially "Say Hello 2 Heaven" which to me is Chris's best work. Also his work in Soundgarden, particularly "Slaves & Bulldozers". They'll send a shiver up your spine, but it's a glorious shiver.

This song was actually the first time that Eddie Vedder was heard on a recording, he was in Seattle to audition for the position in Pearl Jam and happened to be in the studio when the song was being recorded. The story goes that he walked up to one of the mics and started singing along with Chris adn the rest is history.

This came out when I was 18 and on my day off work. I bought the tape...put it in my sony walkman...with extra AA batteries in my pocket...and went to high park in Toronto...and listened to it over and over again...I will never forget that day.

As mentioned...Chris and Matt (from Soundgarden) and Pearl Jam members (minus drummer) formed and recorded this 'Album' in tribute to Andy Wood; singer of Mother love Bone. Andrew was friend and roommate to Chris Cornell. And two PJ members, Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard, were members of Mother Love Bone before Andrew died. Andrew died in 1990, just months after the recording of their first album 33+ yrs ago. But it, Apple, is a good album. I have it on CD, and still play it often.

I started high school in 91 when Soundgarden and Pearl Jam were getting big. Their voices along with Staley and Cobain define the sound of our generation. When you're ready, and when you've explored his some of the rest of his catalog do his cover of Nothing Compares to You (Written by Prince, Famously covered by Sinead O'Connor). That one though... whew. It's Solo (vocally) Acoustic and only a couple of years before he passed.

It's a tribute album from Chris Cornell for his now deceased roommate Andrew Wood. Cornell wrote a couple songs when he went on tour with Soundgarden in Mid 90. When Soundgarden came back to Seattle he approached Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament as they were in Mother Love Bone together with Andrew Wood. The rest is history. Pearl Jam wasn't even a band yet when the recording sessions happened in late 1990. Times Of Trouble and Footsteps are the exact same song but different lyrics.

Fun fact about this song, Chris was in the studio recording this song. But he couldn't find the exact sound he was looking for. Eddie was also at the studio and overheard some of it and he knew immediately what Chris was looking. He joined them in the both and it took 2 takes to create this masterpiece.

The whole Temple of a Dog album is a gem and sounds just as good as it did over 30 years ago. The song "Four Walled World" hits the hardest for me. Eddie Vedder provides backing vocals during the chorus and the whole band is on fire on that track.

What’s even more magical is Chris brought these great talents together before there was even a Perl Jam. This is Eddie & Mike McCready’s first studio recording ever. Eddie was flying up from San Diego to work with what members existed at the time. To say Chris had a musical vision by giving Eddie & Mike room to showcase their talents is a huge understatement to say the least. Chris & his wife (Susan Silver) did the same with Jerry Cantrell & Alice & Chains by giving them a place to live while they got discovered. Susan doesn’t get enough credit for being the key force to what’s now know as the “grudge movement”. She is the godmother of grunge, undisputed!

After Chris' death, Eddie did an acoustic version of Black at a concert. He cried. Very emotional

I'm at work and desperately fighting to hold back tears after first watching your "Black" and then this review and failing a little bit. I was in high school when all these bands hit it big and watching you go throught similar emotions that I did at 15 was like going back in time. Thank you.

I love going back to this record every now and then. There were some amazing tunes written by this band of grunge brothers, who came together to create such a beautiful and colossal album. The interplay between Chris Cornell and Eddie Vedder on the song alone is remarkable. But you also can ignore the musicianship between everybody. This is just one of those once in a lifetime albums that, even though they only had one record, it is timeless and quite a masterpiece in its own right. You should really explore more from this record. There are a lot of bangers on this album. And man do I miss Chris Cornell!

Eddie wasn't supposed to be on the song. He was there waiting for them to finish so he could tryout to be the singer for Mookie Blaylock, formally Mother Love Bone and latter changed to Pearl Jam. All the songs on the album Chris wrote as a tribute to his friend and singer of Mother Love Bone, Andrew Wood who, with so many other 90's singers(Layne Stalely, Bradley Nowell, Scott Wieland, Shannon Hoon, and Nick Traina to name a few)died from a Heroin overdose. Chris had planned to do both parts himself but was having trouble with the lower vocal range parts so Eddie jumped in to help him out ....and the rest is history. One of the those great serendipitous moments in history. There isn't a bad song on the album and many great ones...Say Hello to Heaven, Call Me a Dog, Wooden Jesus, Four Walled World, Reach down, are all great, emotional, heartfelt songs. Check out Mother Love Bone...Stardog Champion is probably their most known song, but Shangri-La was another outstanding track. ✌️

IMO the greatest Vocal displays by both of these Dynamic vocalists is; Chris, "Say Hello to Heaven" from this album (Temple of the Dog") and Eddie`s vocal Bomb from the MTV unplugged "Black"...Aileen both of these performances will leave you speechless!

This whole album is amazing and is still a regular play for me all these years later. This album deals with a lot of dark stuff because of what it was about.

I love this song. One of my favorite parts about the video is they're like, "Hey Chris, we're gonna start with a dramatic shot of you singing in the shadows with some cool lighting, and then have you shredding the guitar on the sand dune while the wind blows your hair back. Uhh... Eddie, you go sit in the bushes over there and sing." lol

yeah, us 90s kids had no idea how spoiled we were at the time, just shear legends at 19-20yrs old, as an older adult now, i look back at everything now and in AWE of how 18-20 yr old's could write sing and perform at the levels they did " same with anything ie. skateboarding, skiing snowboarding, anything in general, music too... Cause i look at what i was doing at that age. it makes me feel like i was a lump of shit.....bc as with anything its a little bit of talent and shear will and drive that got them to these levels of mastery... that's what i feel is missing with this young generation.... very rare to see a kid spend hours a day for months /years practicing something until it happens....when i was young just in my neighborhood 5 of us skateboarded and we practiced 3-4 hrs.' a day for months through years and we got pretty good, but it was my friend every time we took a brake he stayed out, when it got dark he'd find a way to light the area; when it was raining he'd work on stuff that the rain would help like flat ground, i stayed in and kept dry, but i digress he became a monster on a board, and during the time we'd be out and we would always say "your just so damn good and lucky your gifted", but it wasn't till later i realized how many more hours he put in, all those nights we in cooled off drank water and relaxed for a bit, which seemed like 20-30 min added up over months and years. Nothing works better than HARDWORK, DRIVE, DETERMINATION

Oh how I miss the 90’s.

Great song that never gets old no matter how many times you hear it. One of those few songs that stopped me in my tracks the first time I heard it on MTV. Cornell had invited Eddie Vedder to take part in this song between the eventual members of Pearl Jam and Soundgarden, which was already formed. Cornell saw the talent that Vedder had and didn't listen to the jerks that didn't want to accept Vedder into the Seattle music scene because he was from San Diego. Not only was Chris Cornell an amazing artist but he had a good heart.

Keep in mind also that this was the first professional recording of Eddie Vedder. He moved to Seattle to join Pearl Jam shortly after Andrew's death, during the writing and recording of the Temple of the Dog album. Chris asked Stone, Mike and Jeff to bring their new singer along and we got this masterpiece out of it. I don't know if another commenter mentioned it but I highly suggest you check out Chris Cornell's live cover of Billie Jean. Such a beautiful man, musician and soul taken from this world. RIP

The two greatest voices ever

I was fortunate to catch these guys in their final Seattle performance at the Paramount Theater when they went on tour (sans Eddie) a few years back, shortly before Chris's death. I feel so fortunate to have experienced that truly Seattle moment.

Chris Cornell was such a talented music artist! He may be gone but he lives on through his music. He had a talent like no other. Him and Chester Bennington were actually friends. It’s said that Chester took his own life on Chris’s birthday. Such a haunting thought. I miss them both so much! Loved the reaction much love and support.

River Of Deceit by Mad Season would be a good one to check out. The band was a supergroup that included Layne Staley from AIC and Mike McCready from Pearl Jam.

It's so funny looking back at this video now. I was such a big fan of Mother Love Bone and, when Andrew died, it was hard to imagine how the rest of the band would continue on with anyone else. I mean, he had a very particular vibe that I thought anyone else would just be doing an impression of, y'know? Then, of course, they brought in Eddie Vedder, changed their name to Pearl Jam, and continued being incredible... just in a very different way. I guess that was the key, right? They didn't try to be "Mother Love Bone with a new singer," they just became another band with its own sound and made their own history. Anyway, yeah, looking back at this video, I can remember being skeptical about "the new Mother Love Bone singer," but then also being drawn to the voice of "the other guy" in this Temple of the Dog video (which was an album I LOVED, btw). When I found out "the other guy, with the deep voice" was the one who was stepping in with the old MLB lineup, I was def onboard. And then, of course, I heard "Ten" and was sold. As others have mentioned, Aileen, "Say Hello 2 Heaven" from this album is incredible. In fact, it's always been my favorite track from TotD. I like "Hunger Strike" too and it was certainly popular for a reason, but "Say Hello 2 Heaven" is honestly on another level, Chris kills it on the vocals, and it's a lot more directly addressing the loss of Andrew in the lyrics in a way that'll make you cry. You can hear the pain of a man who's lost his friend, pouring out his heart in a song. I hope enough people here will request it that you feel compelled to react to it because I think you'll really love it.
