First time hearing this band, but man, The Mystery Of Pop reminded me of song that would be played by one of those forgotten side projects that the dudes of Spinal Tap would have a flashback about. The giddy little flutey sound just had me belly laughing....

What's with all the bitching about them being upper middle-class in the comments? Is this some kind of UK controversy that, I, as an American, don't understand? I genuinely don't get it. Who cares about someone's background if they make good music? Didn't John Lennon also grow up middle class?

It's the same like all the hippie bands that came from Laurel Canyon, they were only able to be hippies because they had rich parents and alot of people feel the same about Temples I guess. It's kinda understandable that people who don't have to worry about being free promoting weirdness and freedom feels kinda cheap because they never had to fight for it, despite their music still being extraordinary and they probably had to work hard for that as well. Also, these people usually grow up with certain expectations, rebelling against their parents might be very confrontational. But hey, what do I know. I'm just a working class kid that chose to be a photographer. Too bad I'm not middle class, now I'm just a dirty punk, right. TL;DR kids are jelly

Guys, relax. Yes, the vocals are weaker. But it's not bc he's a bad singer - it's bc this is a poor live mix. The levels are off. The bass has no punch. The keys are way too loud - too much reverb directly applied instead of being bused. Compare the sound and tone of the bass in this video to the sound and tone of the bass on the studio recorded version of Certainty. The fault of this performance lies on whoever managed the levels before Temples took the stage (either the band's road techs, the KEXP studio techs, the band itself, or most likely, some combo of all three.) Temples ARE a great band. You can look up a bunch of other videos of them singing this same exact song with much better results. This is one bad performance out of how many shows? Performers performing are doing the most vulnerable thing imaginable. Temples almost always perform at a very high level. Don't shit on them bc they fail 1 out of every 10 times.

The debut album was revolutionary. It was unique and sounded like nothing else in modern music. But what the fuck happened after that??? Everything they have done since then is contrived, boring and standard pop fare that sounds nothing like what made their debut so amazing. They don't even sound like the same band that made Sun Structures at all now.

Yes, man. I understand that some people do not care that rich "artists" are much more likely to appear in the media, including buying their media space, rather than people with "few" money, who rely solely on their talent for appearing. Maybe that's why what we see the most is the result of money, empty art sponsored by daddy, instead of talent. People could stop to listen to artists like Konono No. 1, instead of giving moral to a bunch of rich little boys who play an instrument with hands that never had to do anything else in their lives than to count the money earned from daddy.

Just my vision, success does not have much to do with releasing acclaimed albums. Acclaimed albums can be "built" by buying the best producers and influencers in the media, as Justin Bieber does, this is not about success. In music, as in all art forms, success is something subjective and very personal, a constant work of lapidating the outside world to its own inner truth. Not just spend how much money it takes (especially Dad's money) to be able to buy a hit in the plastic music industry. Just my vision, no need not be offensive if you do not agree man.

I agree with Andre Tierling and Jess Moss. well said. first thing I noticed about their kexp performances is their very expensive gear. wow! also, to add to the whole discussion of talented bands that are working hard to get by: Pyrrhon from New York. they use pretty basic gear but they are incredible musicians. they will never play on kexp or major festivals but they have already put out a whole bunch of great music. anyway, congrats to temples.

Yep man... its a sense of inequality, a construction of the world around the "rich ones", And yes, in a world being destroyed in the name of money, it is prudent to observe everything by the equality bias. Just in case, all the advances in music have always lived from people without a penny in their pockets, but with a heart overflowing to the world. Blues, Jazz, Funk, Rap... the roots did not have to buy anybody to flourish. Nowadays "rich children" buy and copy the style of real talented people to make success on TV. Sad, just sad.
