A little less damaging to the paint than a mag mount... but does it work? Let's get in installed and see how well it works.

I have been using this very antenna sine the late 90's, first on a S-10 Blazer, and now moved to our present car with the remount kit and it's been working great. Used it for APRS with my TH-D72a on 5 watts from the elbow of Cap Cod and was picked up at the Western end of Long Island.

My first antenna for mobile was a glass mount. Worked pretty good, I still have it but not using it. One thing about using a level, don't try mounting it in the driveway if the driveway has a grade to it. The antenna will be level in the driveway but it won't be on the street!

I checked with Larsen and the arrow on the mount can be pointed up or down, as long as the coupler's arrow points the same direction. This is good to know if you want the coax on the coupler to head off in the direction you prefer. Over defroster wires, they advise making sure that where you mount the antenna, make sure that there is an inch or more between the wires. If you are mounting on a lift back (where you see the underside of the mount) you can remove a little of the adhesive along each side in the middle. The you can add a small dot of Sharpie right at the measured mid-point and it will be much easier to get that heater wire right in the middle of the blank space of the mount. SWR is my next challenge, no doubt influenced by the mounting location. Using the out-of-the-box 2/70 antenna, the dips in the SWR were at 443 MHz (1.9) and 138.5 MHz (1.2). I'm probably going to tune a 2m whip first.

How does this do away with the need for groundplane? I've tried 2 magmounts on my Kona, but either something weird with the roof or paint, because I get all kinds of weird clipping in receive while in motion (been told it's not picket fencing). Great when stationary. Works great on Katie's Jetta too, in motion or not...
@temporarilyoffline
@temporarilyoffline 11 ай бұрын
It doesn't do away with the ground plane, and some models have a ground plane on the inside attachment point.

Nice mount. One caution is it cannot be mounted on any glass with aftermarket tint. Since it's a film applied to the glass the mount will pull the film off the glass.

I hope the adhesive tape is better than what is used on the Tram antennas. I put one on my wife's car and it didn't last 2 weeks. We lost it 6 hours into the 15 hr trip to Orlando last December. Now we it use a mag mount 2m/70cm antenna.

These used to freak me out a tad, but now they make window mount bike and kayak racks. Also, not pinching the coax in a door or some panel gap is really a major "pro" of this mobile antenna method.

FYI, there was mention here advising against using the antenna on rear windows containing defroster wires. Two thoughts: FIRST, The antenna comes with written instructions on how to install the mount over those wires by aligning the blank area in the mount that covers that area. It was designed purposely to deal with this situation. SECONDLY, note that many of the newer cars have a black "U" space center-top of the window area that provides a nice "safety-island" you can pluck it onto. (That's a technical term). I'm not a genius, I just made a call to Larsen for advice. Lol. ALSO, for best SWR, they advise to vertically offset the two pieces by 1/4" to 1/3" above or below each other so that they don't completely cover each other. No reason given, they just said "DO it" for better SWR results. Hope this helps. -de W6IFR, "Billy jack"

@@temporarilyoffline This is troubling… My kit did not come with the instructions that are listed on “what’s in the package“… manual… actually,“Instruction sheet“. Not there. It’s also not showing in the link I posted to buy it from giga parts. A little digging on Google though and I found it. I’ll try to locate the link again if anybody wants it and is unable to locate themselves.

Don't know if a bubble level would be of much use because that assumes your car is parked on a level surface. So if you are gonna do that, check how level the ground is too

This one is capacitively coupled, but the have better models with (inside the car) counterpoise/ground planes: amzn.to/3vm1tsR ) It would be really easy to add a counterpoise like this to any through glass antenna that doesn't have one.

Finally got a chance to check this. That car did a Christmas trip to see some family. It's 1.5:1 on 2m, but it depends a lot on your car and even where you install it on your car, so keep that in mind if you get/have one.
