We traveled the state from coast to coast to find destinations all over Florida that native (and transplanted!) Floridians would rather keep to themselves. These are the non-Disney Worlds, the lesser known gems that aren't advertised all over those tourist brochures you see in the hotel lobby.
And come check out our podcast, Sunshine State of Mind, on Apple Podcast, Stitcher, and Google Play!

Back in the 80s I lived in Florida and I loved it a little place I can't tell you about but when I lived there near the beach when you got tired of saltwater you could go across the road into the forest and jump into ice cold freshwater spring so cold you could not swim very deep you could keep your beer ice down in the water it was lovely

All the citizens in Florida get together and vote on whether we want other people to know about certain places. If we don't want others to know we force the mapmakers to remove them from maps and GPS units so they can't be found. We managed to keep the Keys a total secret until just a few years ago and now look. Disney has actually been here since the 1930's but we hid it behind Palm Trees. We still don't let outsiders know about the Florida mountains and the great skiing we have.

Thank you. I'm a transplant so probably biased, but all the don't come here we hate you stuff is pretty silly. Tourism = $ and jobs. I live in the Orlando area and yeah it can be irritating getting around with all the extra vehicles being driven by confused tourists but what am I supposed to do? Tell people to stop taking vacations? Go spend their money elsewhere? Florida is beautiful. I love it here. Makes sense other people will too.
@johnk3606
@johnk3606 5 жыл бұрын
All I would ask is if you come and decide to stay bring a great attitude and keep it. Don’t complain about the heat or how it was better back north or my favorite how it’s getting too crowded. Florida is constantly changing as is natural due to its popularity so its not going to stop changing just because you moved here.
@linmims3049

As a 60 year old life long resident of Florida (NW), I agree, in part with what you're saying. Tourism does bring revenue to the state, however, I hate that the wonderful and mostly deserted beaches that we combed as children have disappeared, such as Grayton and Blue Mountain. I loved having the beach all to ourselves, now they've become overcrowded. We locals rarely even go to the beach because of the rude tourist who think nothing of leaving our once pristine beaches a trashy mess. I don't what to sound mean, or selfish, yes come, stay a while but please leave our beautiful Emerald Coast as beautiful as you found. And stop building on the beach, there is plenty of land available off the sand. Leave our beaches as they were meant to be.

colby silagy I've lived in Florida for damn near twenty years and I can tell you right now that there isn't a single spot in this godforsaken state that is worth going to except for the on-ramp out of this fucking state. Disney's technically a secret cult operation and a lot of children go missing there every year some of them are never found if that isn't enough to send you running that I don't know what the hell is I could probably tell you that it's the Devil Himself that runs this state and you probably would still jump on a fucking bus down here like an idiot

Haters gonna hate. Let'em. Maybe we can tone down on all the damn Yankees moving down here. Personally, I'd like Florida to be a little closer to the Florida I grew up in, when the tourism wasn't as out of control as it is now. You know, there was a time when Disney World actually had kind of an off season where Florida Resident Pass Holders seemingly had the parks to ourselves. No huuuge crowds, no 2 hour waits to hit the popular rides, it was awesome. Now, it's ridiculously crowded year round.

@@horsepastetosy2587 Yeah, I grew up in Tampa, and, we'd get hit by Red Tide now and then. Several weeks after the red tide dissipated, it seemed like there were very few living fish in the water. And, ohhh, that wonderful smell of (literally) tons of rotting sea life along the shore. I feel bad for folks like you when the red tide comes a callin'. Here's hoping y'all don't get hit by another bloom of it this year! 👍

I'm sorry but the things here are sooooo touristy...for real getaway and nature feel, you cant beat the PNW...the mountains are amazing, tons of places to really hike, beautiful oceanside. Plus the pay SUCKS, I'm an RN and when I look at pay AND cost of living, FL falls realllllllllllyyyyyy short. I do love scuba diving though, but honestly there are other states that provide wayyyyy more variety without having to drive super far away.

Ha Ha Ha , you should of seen the Black Hammock Fish Camp back in the 50's and 60'. That's when Dick and Lillian Van Camp owned it , It was real then and one great spot to spend time. I would list all of the spots mentioned on here as minor tourist spots except for the State Park ones. Even us locals like to spend time at the state parks .

@Robert Grubbs please define “hood” please. Most people tend to refer to any black neighborhoods as hood so I’m trying to figure out if that’s what you are saying for a city that is almost 60% white

Some nice areas here, closer to Lake Mary. Fortunate to be living in one of them. But yeah alot of Sanford is pretty ghetto.

These are all popular destinations and the Everglades take up about a 1/3 of the state so no hidden secret there. Devils Den (#1) I would not suggest visiting unless your a diver or plan on at least snorkeling it. Number 1 should have been the freshwater springs that can be found all throughout North Florida. Florida has the highest concentration of freshwater springs in the world and some of the rivers that are formed by them are crystal clear, deep and drinking water clear, and also stay the same temperature year round (average 71f).

Florida is not over crowded compared to other states I’ve lived and visited. I go to springs all the time and no one is there. If it was say Austin Texas there’s no way it wouldn’t be crowded.

Chipley is also home to the Seacrest Wolf Preserve, where you can purchase a private tour to experience the wolves up close! I had a fantastic time when I went with my husband. We got to howl with the wolves and give them belly rubs. ❤ The guides were very knowledgeable and professional!

I grew up in Bartow in Polk county. My mother loved Bok Tower. We went there many times and picnic there and listen to the claren bells. Then as a treat for us kids, my dad would stop up the road at Spook Hill. He would park the car at the bottom of the hill and it would roll backwards up the hill.
