The Jepson Leadership Forum presents Alice Evans for a discussion on " Ten Thousand Years of Patriarchy" on the University of Richmond campus. Evans is senior lecturer at King’s College London and author of the forthcoming book The Great Gender Divergence
The last few decades have seen rapid changes in gender relations and norms -- in the household, in the workforce, and in government. The 2023-24 Jepson Leadership Forum invites speakers to discuss masculinity in the context of these recent cultural changes. March 5, 2024

It's insane how almost every talk I find about patriarchy, especially done by a very educated woman, has so many nasty comments . Just proves how right the women are doing these talks-it is the truth, deal with it, patriarchy fans, your days are coming to an end. Equality and fair pay are not some dirty words, it's what has to happen .

Now we have all these powerful women and society is collapsing. God bless the patriarch.

huh? So you're actually blaming women even for the mess patriarchy has brought on?? Women have NOT been in power much , we have not been making most of the laws and rules, we still make less than men- so blame us, sure. Wow. You just prove the point about patriarchy-it's nasty and unfair to women.

Please ignore the other comment. This is incredibility good! I love her attitude: "I do not answer moral questions, I only look at the data".

She just describe patriarchy as a negative thing. But she didn't tell the the fact that best society were patriarchal societies. There's nothing better than that.

Patriarchy is the greatest things that happen to human history. Men have sacrificed more than woman.

Female status doesn't matters in sexual selection and for man status and power is everything.

Women in ancient Egypt were ahead of their time. They could not only rule the country, but also had many of the same basic human rights as men. They enjoyed the same legal and economic rights and this concept can be found in Egyptian art and contemporary manuscripts. Dynastic Egypt actually initiated the world's first foreign aid program, donating huge quantities of grain to other nations. Each had equality of the sexes. Ancient Mesopotamia Women had the most freedoms during the Uruk Period (4100-2900 BCE) and the Early Dynastic Period (2900-2334 BCE). Sparta Spartan women were treated well and given formal state recognition. Etruscans The ancient people of Etruria, Italy, had great gender equality. Indus Civilization Some suggest that the Indus Civilization was more egalitarian than other early complex societies. Basque Ancient Basque, early medieval, and medieval Basque culture were more egalitarian than Spanish, French, and European culture in general. Polygamy iwas also practiced in some Islamic, Hindu, and Christian countries. Some Native American, Indigenous Australian, and Mongolian peoples also practice "group marriage," where a nuclear family has multiple husbands and wives. Ultimately, rules concerning marriage and female roles stemmed from religious traditions and values. Women had centuries to invent a religion that would have Many holes in Alice's "male, bad" narrative. Her narrative seems to dictate men had it easier than women during ancient times....dont forget, men may have had more professional opportunities, but for women to not have to subject themselves to labor hardships, that in itself is a HUGE opportunity. She left out the Black Widow of Rome and Catherine the Great. Was the first God a woman? Archaeological evidence suggests that God was considered female for the first 200,000 years of human life on earth, even if male-dominated religions sought to displace the matriarchal order. Stop trying to force women into masculine roles and traits - at the end of the day, all women want a male partner who dominates them - its biological, Alice. If you have relationship issues with men, there's no need to seek acceptance by forcing society to cave into your own insecurities. Love you!
