More like fifty years ago - 1971. Alvin Lee was at Woodstock in 1969 and passed away a couple of years ago. Try Good Morning Little Schoolgirl or the Woodstock live version of Goin' Home!! Epic guitar playing.

Yes it is sad when the same social issues we were singing about in the 60's & 70's are now worse. People must get involved.

Lots of differences between how to solve those issues compared with today. The song pointed to individuals to solve world problems, hippies were against big government and more restrictions. Now the ones fighting for the same issues reversed polarity believing the issues can only be solved by larger government.

Well that's a pretty easy question to answer since he gives it to you right in the song "tax the "RICH" feed the poor till they're on their Rich no more" Because money runs everything not politicians like the rich who use them and the political arena as a tool in the mainstream media the rich own to keep the poor and middle classes divided against each other so that the rich ruling class can keep going to the bank, among many other distractions they use in the mainstream media, it's called divide and conquer. "Forget the politicians the politicians are only put there to give you the idea that you have freedom of choice... you don't... you have no choice, you have owners they own you, they own everything they own all the important land they own the corporations they long since bought and paid for the Senate, the City Halls, the State houses, Congress, they got the judges in their back pockets and they own all the media companies so they control just about all the news and information you get to hear they got you by the balls they spend billions of dollars every year lobbying (bribing) to get what they want well we know what they want they want more for themselves and less for everybody else" - George Carlin The greedy Rich are the problem you know these guys the Central bankers➡️👁️ ⚠️ on the dollar bill that's why Jesus Christ said "It's harder for a rich man to enter into the Kingdom of heaven than it is for a camel to enter the eye of a needle"

@paulbaker7193
@paulbaker7193 Жыл бұрын
At the time this song was put out , the younger generation was actually concerned about certain issues and were saying they wanted them to change . But that they were unsure of how to go about doing it . Unlike todays generation that only care about issues that affect them directly . And they are so thin skinned about those issues , yet , completely oblivious about ALL the issues affecting mankind and brotherhood . And our fellow humans . If we worked on all of them instead of concentrating and having such anger towards a certain few , we may actually change things . Until then , keep crying and changing nothing . Have any of you ever been in a fight and the person you`re fighting is just so unimaginably pissed off that they can`t even focus . They`re so easy to beat . Yet someone who is calm and always thinking one move ahead always has the edge . Think about it my brothers and sisters . And perhaps one day you`ll understand just what you need to do to make a change .

The opening line, "Everywhere is freaks and harry's, dykes and fairies, tell me where is sanity?" ... He sings that line from the point of view of the older, conservative generation, NOT his personal view. It shows that we have the same problems now as we did then... Not just war and greed, but BIGOTRY and RACISM too, based on, well... just about everything.

The whole album is worth listening to. It was one of my favorites when I was a kid. You have to remember the time. And sorry, I disagree. All the social issues we have today, we had in 69. The culture was different, and the way people handled themselves was different. I don't remember who said it, but "the more things change, the more they stay the same".

There will NEVER be an end to "poor" people. Some people are just terrible with money or have no drive to make themselves successful in anything. That's why you see damn near every poor person who wins the lottery and is a millionaire over night is broke within a few years. Or even athletes getting multi million dollar contracts and broke as soon as their playing days are over. It was so bad they had to set up programs and classes for players and how to manage money for retirement because they had no idea how to handle money. True story

The point you might want to take from the song, is that the bulk of things you're thinking hard about now was already a subject of intense thought 50 years ago. People did and still do the best they can with the solutions available but the problem is always about balance. A lot of progress gets made while we can maintain balance. History shows what happens when we can't.

Written during the Vietnam War (and other driving issues of the late 60s/early 70s). It gave rise to the mistaken assumption that Alvin Lee (the lead singer) was necessarily an advocate of everything you hear him talking about in this song). When, the reality is, the things he mentioned, where basically many of the simple catch pharses and buzz words that were swarming all over the place at the time. (Much like today). Things that were basically emotionally charged statements that did not require too much critical thought. So, Alvin Lee is really saying: *Gee, I*d love to change the world, but the rest of you sound like you got all the answers! Me, I don*t know what to do! (Forgive all the asterisks, they are substituting for the quotes keys which are not working!)

So sad what's obvious. Time moves on, but as they say, some things change, some things never do. That's got to stop. There has to be equality for all, or there is for no one. way back then, it was obvious. How is it that things are still the same today? If not even worse? Did my generation learn nothing??? I'm in my mid 60's now, I was a teen when this came out, and there has not been enough done up to today to equalize our society. As an old hippy, I faced my share of backlash for my beliefs. So all I can say is Alvin Lee got it right. Where is the sanity? I definitely have more love in my heart now than ever, and not able to express it. I wish I could tell everyone that my eyes have not been closed. We are all people, and I just want to love my brothers and sisters. Ok, off my soapbox..:) Love to all, and Jayy, thanks for being so open minded. Music binds us all. A message that's good for one is good for all. Just listen.

Same fundamental issues but a polar opposite beliefs today. Hippies were the original liberals. Liberal in freedom and less government, they coined the phrase "government trying to stick it to the man". They were aware of world problems but despised big government. Now those labeled "liberals" feel like more government = less problems and are willing to trade independence for dependency. This song points to individuals to make a difference and not governments.
