@samramoss2 If you know Puerto Rican history, then you know most Spaniards went to Puerto Rico after the conquista. Like my people, the Canary Islanders and many Spaniards that went to Puerto Rico as fishermen, farmers and merchants in the 18th and 19th centuries. Many. Not all Spaniards that arrived in Puerto Rico were conquistadors. Most were not. But Puerto Ricans want to live this lie that they are Tainos, when most only have a small amount and are more Spanish than anything.

@Elly56 Why do U.S. Puerto Ricans only like to claim Taino and nothing else? Most Puerto Ricans in the U.S. are more Spanish than either Taino or Black. On the island, many Puerto Ricans are island born Spaniards. I never understood that. Are they ashamed to be Spanish? I can see and hear the Spanish influence in this music more than anything. Saludos a todos los Canarios y Puertorriqueños. Soy Canario-Estadounidense. Isleño!

@samramoss2 See my previous comment. Sorry, I meant the Canary Islands did not gain independence, but joined the country of Spain. Today, Canarians are seen as Spaniards, even though the accent is different and the culture is it's own.

@IslenoGutierrez Thank you for telling it like it is, it really is refreshing.

@samramoss2 Yes, colonization happened in the Canary Islands, and the Guanche Berbers suffered the same faith as the Amerindians. Even we are partially mixed with Guanche blood, but only some of the population, not all of it. The Canary Islands did gain independence like Latin America, but did the opposite and join the country of Spain to become a region of Spain. But Canarians do feel Spanish, but understand there is an extra element of Guanche culture. But we don't hate them.
