Exploring NYC's Immigrant Stories: A Visit to the Tenement Museum
Join me on a visit to the Tenement Museum, a unique museum on the Lower East Side of New York City. This museum isn't just about exhibits; it's about storytelling. They bring the immigrant experience to life through guided tours and even offer walking and food tours of the vibrant neighborhood.
In this video, we'll get a glimpse inside one of their historic buildings, accessible only on a guided tour (link: www.tenement.org/apartment-to.... We took the "Finding Home" tour (link: www.tenement.org/tour/finding..., which explores the lives of the Epstein and Saez Velez families who shared a tenement apartment at 103 Orchard Street in the 1950s and 1960s. Despite sharing the same building and experiencing a changing Lower East Side, their stories are distinct, reflecting the experiences of Jewish Holocaust survivors and Puerto Rican migrants.
After our tour, we'll browse the museum's gift shop which boasts a fantastic selection of books about New York City. My party couldn't resist picking up a few - and surprisingly, even I made a purchase!
This video offers a taste of what you can expect at the Tenement Museum. Let me know in the comments if you've ever visited or are interested in learning more about NYC's immigrant history!
