Thanks Ten! You brought back memories for this old man from my youth living in Michigan and fishing these secluded narrow creeks, but more for Brown trout. The thrill of fishing in such confined yellow streams and pulling out 6-8” was so satisfying, even though I had the open deep waters of the Great Lakes all around me, (which I also enjoyed). But there was some feeling that so atttracted me to this venue that’s hard to put into words. And as you noted, when you occcasionally pulled out a 12-18” trout, (that by deep rivers and lake tributaries would be considered normal size, it was that much more gratifying to nab one in these narrow and shallow creeks.

This is the type of fishing I grew up doing with my brother. We grew up on tiny creeks and small beautiful trout. The thrill of catching even a 12 inch back then would make our whole camping trip worth it. We would fish in the rain and be soaking wet shivering as we got back to camp. We would fish sunlight to sundown. Nothing like catching a decent trout like this in a creek like this. Thanks for sharing

Yeah. My heart would be pounding too. Catching a fish of that size in that stream makes it very memorable. You can catch 8-10 pounders in henry’s lake but that’s expected. Catching a 17 inch cutt in a tiny creek like that isn’t common. Well done.

This video really demonstrates the reason that I love Tenkara! I have fished larger, well known streams with Western style fly gear and landed some big fish. The enjoyment is lost when there are crowds of people. These tiny, overlooked creeks can be amazing and very peaceful! Every wild trout that I encounter is a treasure! Even the tiny ones! You are right! The memory of one big fish, out of such a place, is very meaningful! Thank you!

Good stream so narrow ! Excellent skill !! Fabulous fish!!! We, most japanese anglers, can not tell cutthroat from rainbow trout. But I finally realized they are completely defferent from your picture. Cutthraots are so cute and the cheek is a bit blueish. Very clear skin. More similar to Amago and Yamame, my favorite species. thank you.

Part of the wonder of fishing is what lies beneath the waters round the bend. Sights, sounds and the thrill of it all. What a Beautiful fish. Glad to see it stay in the creek. Finding an off the beat body of water that most folks will say is un-fish able shows their lack of faith in nature. Where there is water there is life.

The cutthroat trout I'm used to are of the Lahonton variety, in Pyramid lake. I would never have thought a species of trout bigger than brook trout to be found in a creek like the one you're fishing in...and being able to drop a fly in those conditions is amazing, I know I couldn't do it.

I tried tenkara a few years ago in the eastern Sierra. Borrowed a buddies rod to try in addition to my usual lure casting. It was a great way to learn fly type fishing, easy to pick up, and the gear perfect for lightweight backpacking. Only negative was it wouldn’t work for any larger water where you want to get far out from shore. So fun and simple though.

Rarely, do I use the term monster. In fact, I often chide those who use monster in their title when the fish is only average. Dude, this truly is a monster for this size of a creek in quickwater (with little pocket water). This isn't the first time you've done this. You are restoring my faith and showing us not only how it's done, but that it can be done.

That is mind blowing that a fish that large can live in such a small creek. I fished in larger creeks and ONCE managed to catch a brown trout that large. Mainly used small rods, 5-pound line and the smallest hooks...works well! A friend and I went to Junction Pool in Roscoe NY and my friend's first cast of the morning caught a 22" brown trout with beautiful spots so it wasn't a stocked one. There was a brief rain falling at Noon and we were pulling out so many 16" to 18" trout that we had to toss many back since we reached our five/day maximum. Some went on the smoker and some were on the grill in foil simmering in melted butter and fresh squeezed lemon juice!

I used to occasionally catch lunker fish in tiny creeks. One of the reasons they are there is that most anglers won't even give those waters the time of day instead favoring more popular fishing holes. One time I caught a 3 lb Rainbow from a creek that you could literally step across. There is a creek in the medicine bow range that never has any anglers fishing it. It takes a two mile walk down in a canyon to get to but there are some interesting trout varieties that I have never seen before. And occasionally you can hook a decent size fish.

I live in Tulsa, OK now but grew up in Washington State outside of Seattle. Fishing small streams for big trout was always my favorite. I would use a live worm with a bobber or a dry fly with one of those clear floating bobbers so it wouldn’t spoke the fish drifting with the fly. Most of the big came like yours did under a wood jam.

I didn't see any TREES here, but there was quite a lot of brush--very close to the edge of the stream, and you made several beautiful casts, right on the button, quite literally. That last fish was more than a surprise. I have NEVER caught a fish that size in such a small stream. Perhaps that's the difference between the northern Appalachians and the northern Rockies. This has to be one of my favorite videos that you've made since you began--it has a beginning, a good strong middle, with several nice fish, and a smashing, unexpected end with the whopper. Perfect.

Tristan, I love your videos, and this is easily my favorite of your videos. I fished this creek twice, two years apart, some years back when I was angling for the Wyoming Cutt Slam, and an affable retired Wyoming Game and Fish employee that I encountered at his campsite on a neighboring stream (he had been a head honcho) recommended this water to me, suggesting I would do well, adding the observation, "you WILL catch Bonneville Cutthroat Trout". Boy, was he right. My experience mirrored yours, Tristan, in that I found the creek to be chock full of Bonneville Cutthroat Trout, as my friendly benefactor had asserted. As you mentioned, I also far and away prefer the small, intimate creek settings. Accordingly, on my initial visit, I concentrated my efforts on the smaller upstream section, and I was impressed at how even small rills in this creek seemingly too small to hold a fish would produce respectable trout. On my subsequent visit, I spent perhaps an hour on the lower section just below one of the many beaver ponds. The fish averaged considerably larger (I suppose not surprisingly) in the larger, lower section, including a few in the range of your whopper. What a thrill to see you catch such a Leviathan in such a small setting! You got my pulse going as I watched you hook and land that beautiful fish. What with the intervening years and all the "slings and arrows" that have accompanied them - ha! - It is unlikely that I will ever be able to return and fish that stream, but your fine video elicited many pleasant and happy memories (not the least among them almost getting stuck in the snowdrift blocking the pass - on BOTH trips - in July!!) As always, I look forward to seeing your next video - keep it up, Sir!

A snowdrift blocked the pass in July?? Lol that's Wyoming for you, I guess. And yeah, I also fished this stream when I did my WY Cutt Slam in 2020. I fished it a couple miles higher up, though, just long enough to catch a single fish before moving onto the next stream. I hadn't planned on fishing this stream on this day but was driving along it and thought, "You know what? Let's give this one another shot." I'm glad I did! Thanks Jonathan!

Looks like you miss as many strikes as you catch. That tenkara method would drive me crazy. The scenery is beautiful.

Living aboard a sailboat on the coast of British Columbia there are thousands of islands in wilderness. Many of them have small lakes accessible by hike. Sometimes I drag a small kayak up the streams that reach the ocean. The trout fishing is spectacular. Good fishing...

Wow! Im about to enter the Tenkara world soon. I’m incredibly frustrated with western fly fishing but really like using and tying flies. Your casting is impressive!!
