Tennis Commentary & Why Words Matter
Even before Emma Raducanu's dramatic success at Flushing meadows in 2021, we were told, by former legends of the game, that there were 'no holes in her game', that she was a 'future hall-of-famer' and that she would be a 'multiple Grand Slam' champion.'
But what happens if she fails to meet these red-hot expectations?
Shouldn't the tennis world better manage its expectations for its young champions?
And, whilst hype from the press is inevitable - shouldn't ex-players be more considerate and balanced in their praise?
After all, Raducanu is at the very start of her career, which can take many twists and turns.

This was one of the most intelligent commentaries I've heard. Emma after the US Open no coach and was actually coaching herself. Covid wow another thing yet she went on, pulled out but still the coach thing was a problem. The best female players in the world, most missing, took ages to get to where they are. I do think Emma will be a miracle and when that happens it's going to be amazing.. For now it will be interesting watching the woman's game. It's like dice in a cup there are no greats at the minute.

Aside from the inevitable plausible accolades that now piggy ride on her refutation Emma must remember NOT to go at full gear in her tennis in her effort to keep up to her fan's expectation but pay attention to her health and avoid ALL kind of physical injuries at this stage of her career.Time is on Emma's side. There is no need to rush for any SLAM yet they will definitely come in her way. That’s not true. Ivanovic was a child prodigy and was consistently making Slam SFs and two Slam finals before winning her first Slam and becoming #1 in the world. If anything, she underachieved greatly and most people thought she would go on to win other Slams. Same with Stephens, she was immensely talented and people thought she had the capability to win many Slams.

When Martina said 'there are no holes in her gfame' she means _technically._ Many players have a weak side, or are vulnerable to slice, or have a weak second serve (or a weak first serve). A player can have no holes in their game and still be beaten - as Murray, Rafa, Roger and Novak have proved against each other for the last ten years.
@xav9258

I would not include Murray along with the other three (all have 20-plus grand slams), the idea of the Big Four was always a joke! More British hype. Mentally, Murray has always been a bit flaky. Something happens on court, he blows up, loses the next 10 games.

Anyone who wins a grand slam looks brilliant technically and strategically. However, Women's tennis has a lot of one hit wonders. The best predictor of future greatness is the overall win rate. The truly great players have win rates of about 80% or higher. Swiatek is now averaging 76% overall, but 89% this year! Raducanu has an overall average of 54%, with a best annual average of 67% in 2021. Coco Gauff is now averaging 66%, with a best annual average of 69% in 2019. With an overall win rate of less than 70%, it is unlikely that a player will win more than 2 or 3 Grand Slams.

Great video, and I m agreeing 2022 will be a huge learning curve for Emma. She just might able to win a couple of WTA titles but no Slams, not yet anyway..... it is true she was an awesome weapon during the recent US Open..... whether she had an easy draw I dont think so. Reckon 2023 will be the year she gonna get into top 5...... a few slams along the way. But there's no doubt she can play. She has the talents.... it is a question whether she can forget all the media crap and find her inner talents and I m sure she will. Whether Im bias or not but god damn she is a fine looking lady. And I cant wait to see her 'grow' better, faster and stronger this year. Roll on AO, it is about to start in 2 days time. Come on Emma....show us what you got!!!???? Good luck Em..... The thing is, the level needed to win a Grand Slam tournament in women’s tennis has never been lower. Most of the time, players don’t even need to beat anyone from the top 10-15 in order to win a Slam and have an extra day of rest, making the Slams easier to win than regular tour events. Two random teenagers, one of which was ranked outside the top 150, playing a Slam final is literally rock bottom for the WTA. There is an absence of elite players gatekeeping Slam titles and as a result the stakes aren’t nearly as high nor as special. Slams aren’t this giant hurdle you need to overcome by being the best, it’s simply enough that you play at a decently high level, be consistent and capitalize on the draw completely falling apart. Raducanu is one of the many that has emerged victorious from this post-Serena transitional era, but the hype is unwarranted. That being said, I do think she has the potential to be a great player, but it will probably take a few years. She’s still too young.

I AM EMMA'S BIGGEST FAN. Eversince Wimbledon. My biggest love for Emma is her character (on & off the court - u got to be kidding me if u say her precious smile doesn't melt ur heart). But, this doesn't have anything to do with what im about to say.. What does it take to have a good chance of winning a major? 7 consecutive very good match or 7 exceptional match played, gonna give these WTA players within reach of these trophies. Is there ever 'easy' draw in WTA? I don't believe so & i never did. But why there's so many different major champions in this last 4 years? Its because there is NO domination. Its easy to forget that legends like Martina Navratilova, Steffi Graf & Serena Williams only came ONCE in a decade. Its just that they came in RIGHT AFTER ANOTHER that makes this domination continuation a non-stop & became like a tradition. But there WERE many good players which also became Hall of Famers, DURING this eras. So, we all (tennis fans) EXPECT somebody to dominate after Selena, because we've been served with this 'domination' tradition for decades. For me, its too early to say.. All these current champions are still young. BUT by EXPECTING these young winners to DOMINATE EACH TIME THEY WON A MAJOR, is a crime in itself. It might gonna take a while for 'domination' eras to begin again. So, just be SUPPORTIVE of ur favs, but DONT put too much expectations on them. Because in the current field, there are about 100 players who can beat one another on their given day.

I keep hearing people wondering whether I know Emma. Have I ever met her physically? No. However, some of the best male tennis players (and some female tennis players), who are somewhat familiar with me, have been saying that we two have a lot in common (an unusual amount). I am generally better known than many among the "athlete clique". I was a number of years ago dubbed the Bay Area Super Fan for my helpful comments on Bay Area pro teams. More recently I have been commenting on the women's world cup skiing. I also played racquet sports. Thus Emma can "know" me to some extent without actually meeting me. This helps with trust on her part. Also because we have a lot in common, I can think along the same lines she does without straining myself. She can understand me without much effort. We have been communicating a bit through public forums. Emma has been saying my comments have been helpful. I have been trying to help. I have been trying to help even with injuries and blisters. I have also been trying to help with tennis at least in fundamentals. She seems to be listening. My comments seem to be helping when I see her play. She has taken it on the chin with all of her injuries. I have been trying to keep her from getting too down on herself. She is a great talent. To some extent you may have had to experience lows yourself to know what she has really been going through after he big US Open win. They do say, "Glory is fleeting." However, talent is not fleeting except if there is serious injury involved. Emma has the talent. I like to think I am helping her show it without having to experience as much pain. Perhaps I am showing myself to be a nice guy. Nice guys with a lot of experience tend to be empathetic to people with talent who are trying hard. I like to think I am a nice guy. Emma also has a strong interest in Economics. That is another thing we have in common. In a sense she knows me without knowing me (without have physically met me). I a sense I know her better than many people she talks to every day.

And what is your point? You sound as though you have something against Emma Raducanu. Martina is a professional and she did a fantastic job. She has to be fair and impartial. Who knows, she may be the next best player in the future. All the other young, up and coming players you mentioned, have yet to win a slam, but Emma has one under her belt. she also participated in the same tournament with Barty, Iga and Sabalenka. Where were these players in the final? Barty has been on tour since 2010 and only just won her second slam and stay in the number one spot. For now, my girl Iga is just a one slam wonder. If I were you, I would not mention Kenin or Sabalenka. Kenin won one slam and was never heard from again. Sabalenka again just got beat by a player ranked number 100. She loses to anyone who makes her play tennis, yet she also remains in the top 10. Words matter only when they are negative like whomever posted this channel. Also, women tennis has problems from top to bottom, not just Emma. Try and not to be bias against one player and try and sugar coat it.

The ones who hype you up are the same who knock you down. In tennis and more broadly in life, the are bound to be ups and downs, and Raducanu is yet to experience a significant down. It will happen, and we are possibly witnessing it unfolding right now, but don't bash her too much, or there won't be a chance for her to bounce back.

But I do think Emma will eventually live up to the hype. People forget that this is just her first full year of being on the WTA tour. It takes a lot to play tennis week-in, week-out and travel all over the world to do it. Plus all her endorsements, magazine shoots, interviews etc. must also take up time. Those who chide her for taking on the endorsements, well tennis is an expensive sport, she needs the money to build a good team around her, pay for all their travel expenses, hotels, meals etc. on top of salaries. It took Sharapova 2 years of full time junior tennis plus 1 yr 7 mo's of full time WTA pro tour to win her first major. She didn't even win a single match in her first 2 slams. Emma made it to 4R in her first slam, and won it in her second as a qualifier, without dropping a set, within the first 3 months of her WTA tour, and prior to that, she didn't play a single competition for 18 months due to Covid. It is simply breathtaking what she has achieved. It's understandable that expectations are sky high. As McEnroe said multiple times, you don't win 10 matches in a grand slam as a "fluke", she is the real deal. Once she gets passed this year of growing pains, get her body used to the grind, and get a good team around her including a full time coach and trainer, perhaps a nutritionist, she'll make more history, just wait. She is far from done, she's just getting started.

Reality check form future: she lost 2nd round in A0, 1st and RG, 2nd at wimbledon, 1st at us open, and she wasnt able to win more than 2 matches in a row. So there are players that have done it better in thejr first 6 majors. And the most important thing in tennis isnt how you play before you won the grand slam but after, and she has been pathetic

At last, some common sense amongst the ridiculous nonsense gushed out over this young talent. Give her time (it may take a few years yet) before she can settle into what will be her stride. If of course the silly people making rash predictions allow it.

Poor Emma! After winning the 2021 U.S. Open she let all her team go saying they did not have WTA experience! Look at her now! Cannot even win her 1 rd. matches now!😞😫😱👎 Looks like she will be another Genie Bouchard in the making here! ☹️ Just no longer a fighter now! She should hire Rafa part time to “never give up” mentality in close matches and how to fight back when you down a couple of games and comeback to win the set. How to play injured. Emma gets a lot of injuries for a 19 year old! Need to workout on her stretching routine too! Basically, Emma hired a coach that got canned by Kerber. Who made this decide to hire her new coach is an idiot! Emma plays better without a tennis coach! Emma is not the same dominating aggressive player she was at the U.S. Open. Now she makes lots of UE, hit the ball with less pace, hits the ball back at her opponent in the middle of the court just to setup a finishing shot back that she has to try to return on the run and it usually a short floater. She now serves down the T or to the forehand in the add side and the returner just moves to hit it back with lots of pace to her in the open court! In addition, Emma hitting the ball with more topspin and at a slower pace. Her opponent easily move to meet it. Her matches for the most part are all long, 3 set matches too! Emma seems to be running out of juice to fight back! Emma now is a pusher and retriever tennis player. No longer an aggressive all court player that won her the U.S. Open. 😂

She mauled everyone in front of her. Only one player took her to 5 games, in only one set. In 20 sets she served only 16 double faults, lost only 7 service games, and had at least one break point in 33 out of 48 service games - that's nearly 70%. Would it have been more astonishing if she'd beaten Osaka, Barty, or Sabalenka on the way? Possibly. But it was astonishing enough. She'd played 2, count them, 2, top 50 players before and she brushed past these players as if she hadn't started the year at 350-odd in the rankings but 35. Including the players who _had_ beaten Osaka, Barty, and Sabelenka - and the Olympic champion, and a player who ended the year in the top ten despite her loss to Emma. A half-arsed comment like yours suggests that you just want to belittle her.

Radacanu is trying to be the women's version or answer to Nadal. She's trying to go so hard in matches she's forcing herself to retire, making simple errors and causing injuries that will cause her career to end early. The reason I use Nadal in comparison was simply being a fan since he turned prop I always remember everyone saying how much damage he's doing to his body with his style of play. Look now, he's still winning major grand slams and has blown even djokovic in his prime away but those early days have really taken a toll on him. He's needing numbing injections before playing, his shoulders, ribs, back and his feet have received unrecoverable damage that's going to make him retire earlier than some others like Federer. She needs to take time, understand tennis and becoming a great in the sport takes time and patience. Play to your strengths and not to the crowd and fans, before those 2 weeks she hadn't won any major competition and just turned pro. The mindset she had was simply, get as far as I can and even getting past round 1 would be a positive. She needs to drop the expectations that she's going to win or make it to the semi finals or last 16 everytime she plays, don't play with an intensity that's going to cause irreversible damage because not everyone can continue like Nadal has. Time is key, patience is key and self preservation is sports like tennis are the key elements that allow you to develop ad a player. The British public have this uncanny ability to apply such pressure to our tennis players that every single one of them foil and crumble, even Andy Murray after his Wimbledon win never achieved the same greatness, yes he still became sensational and won other tournaments but the British expected him to hit the heights of Federer, Nadal and Djokovic and expected him to play with an intensity that again caused him to make fatal errors towards his health that hindered his game. The duffernece, Nadal and others didn't have the same pressure applied to them by the world's eyes, only the pressure they apply to themselves to win and progress in this sport
