As a onehanded backhand player I try to stay away from the high backhand as much as possible, but it is a good technique to have in your toolkit. Instead of using the high backhand I like to step in, get the ball early and hit it at a height somewhere between my knee and my bellybutton. This has considerable advantages. You hit the ball early so you lower the time your opponent has to get to it. You change and control the tempo because this is one of the better ways to take control in a rally. You can choose to advance to the net since taking it early, most of the time, means stepping inside the court and building a forward momentum. The drawback though is getting to the ball in time, which means more effort. And how we spend our energy on the court is something all of us have to choose. The slice you guys showed very well is also a very important control tool. I think a more in-depth video would be great since it's either underused by most players or abused by people who don't trust their backhand. Thanks for the video, keep up the good work and sorry for the long post.

Thanks for the video. Lots of interesting info. Detail and alternatives surpass other training vids. Absence of repetition is nice too. Confused by: @3:39: "tilt your torso back in the opposite direction to elevate that right shoulder" The video shows horizontal shoulder line at contact @3:41. @3:45: "Federer will adjust the racquet head to be more vertical at contact" Adjust grip? wrist position? shoulder line? (Shoulder line horizontal here too.) @4:21: "raise the racquet orientation by rotating your arm outward" Doesn't the arm rotate outward gen'lly for OHBH? "Racquet orientation" relative to what? Or just raise the head above the grip? Refreshing to see moonball lesson that goes beyond "1. move back, 2. take it on the rise, or 3. suffer". Looking fwd to more videos.

Just need to be careful that once the feet are airborne, you remove the hip and core as the power source. It will be all shoulder and wrist from then on. Ok if you are healthy and athletic.

Another amazing clarification guys, thank you! I'll be falling back a lot on my high topspin one-handed backhand just to counteract that moonball angle. I'm using the slice exclusively when closing down to the net, couse at this point the opponent is not that sharp in splitsteping and the positioning on the court is out of the usual rhythm which gives it a bit of a surprise factor when rushing to the net. It works let's say 70percent of the time, depending on the accuracy of the slice and the opponents reading my body language preparing for this big chip and charge. And I'll be going HERE'S UR MOONBALL SLICED INTO YO FEET WHATCHU GONN DOO?!!!

You guys make an awesome team! I’m going to try raising my left shoulder for the flat return on my 2HBH. I use the slice already and try to take the high ball on the rise when it’s mid court. I have been moon balling back on those high backhands also which are too defensive. Now I can’t wait to try the flat return you showed. Thank you!

Yup ...... eventually, the slice must come into play; especially if you’re under 5’10” . My second serve is a looping spin/kick serve that kicks 6-10 feet. Unless you’re a 5.0 player, you’ll have problems with it.

@RacquetFlex I was wondering if you could make a video on how to deal with high one handed backhands on the run. I tend to get pulled wide on my forehand, leaving my one-handed backhand open to a high bouncing drive. Dealing with this on the run is very difficult.

Welcome Grant Vanderhayden! Greaat video guys! So, mods compared to the normal mid height Backhand: 1. Upright torso posture while normal take back 2. Higher contact point of racquet head in relation to the grip 3. Usual follow thru Points 1 and 2 are a give or take and compensate and adjust for hitting the high ball Right? Thanks guys!!!

And how to attack it at the highest peak ? I'm playing single handed BH, I succeeded several times but I'm not consistent at all. That said, the few times I do it, the ball goes like a rocket, Wawrinka style. It feels so great but I hit them properly 5-10% of the time .. Do you have any tips ?

Hey Rohan! Great question and apologies for the misclarification. The racquet is slightly slanted up relative to being completely horizontal. You can achieve this by starting your external shoulder and forearm rotation until it is slightly slanted about 10-15° at contact. Hope this clarified the technique further!

The two handed backhand is basically cheating because players who do that effectively have two forhands. Look at the mechanics of the shot and what each arm is doing. It is in fact effectively a second forhand. Before you hate on me, Try to debunk my argument, please.
