I was a band geek growing up and now as I'm getting into my 30s I bought my first tuba a couple years ago and have gotten back into a couple community bands... and being an aircraft sheet metal fabricator/repair tech I love this channel! Keep up the awesome videos, I dig all of it!

You are inspirational. It makes me search craigslist looking for horns to fix up. Most of all to play them again

Amazing to watch your videos Mr. Wes and see the passion you put into what you do. Congratulations. Could you please tell how to improve or restore scratches on gold lacquered instruments. Thanks

I’d like to invest in a “Wes Lee Spinny Jig Deal”. Silver plating always feels like magic to me. The test piece turned out great. Fun video today. Felt like hanging out in the shop as an assistant, doing a little of this, a little of that.

Wes, the "spinnie thing" you're looking for is called a slip ring. It passes an electrical current through it but also rotates. I use a slip ring for nickel-plating firearms parts so that I can keep the part slowly rotating for even coverage of the plating. I found them on Amazon in sizes that range from 5A all the way up to 60A.

I have no idea whether the slip ring technique is totally commonplace within the plating world, but I've never heard of it, and it's a wonderful innovation.

better would be to make a circular anode so no rotation necessary

In America, it will be easy to find a job... if you come _legally._ If you sneak into the country, you will have to cut grass or cook food, for a job. It's good that you speak English, which means more jobs will be available for you.

Hi Wes. Cool Mark VI overhaul. I just bought a 1967 Mark VI tenor that has been overhauled and plays well. It supposedly has the original lacquer, and it looks pretty good, but there is some liquid residue that’s been hardened on the ridge of the bell. I was wondering if that could be the patina ceiling wax you were talking about?

Hi Wes - Thanks for the tip about using Johnson paste wax to add a sheen and protection to bare brass patina. I have a 104K Mark VI tenor that I recently cleaned up with a citric acid solution, but it seemed that every time I played it, the next day I had to grab a swab with the solution to remove a green spot or streak. I had a can of Johnson's in my shop for woodworking. I just added a coat and I'm looking forward to seeing the difference the wax makes. The sheen is beautiful. I saw some wax made especially for this purpose (Renaissance), but it's very expensive and it looks to have the same applications as Johnson. What was your process for cleaning the the Mark VI in this video prior to applying the wax? What solution did you use and did you dunk it for a period of time?

Wes , I have given myself " a project " and while some folks are inclined to think I am totally over my head in this. : here goes my best description of what I have ..... Starting with the body of a very vintage YORK - baritone .... I need to either cannibalize another horn or make all the key-work myself . I have a Buescher - Bari that is a near perfect twin , however the Buescher has 2 tone holes on the pigtail that the York does not ...... The top 1/3 of the body on the York needs to be straightened . . . . . and thanks to you , I have made myself a 2 x 4 adjustment tool ;) I am also thinking of using the pigtail from the Buescher - also because it has a proper fitting neck .... any advise is greatly appreciated . Tim p.s. I have managed to collect quite a few horns this year , all different sizes and all of them are the curved - variety .

I might want to add - my goal is to have the York. being not just playable , but also be a featured item of my complete collection , as a silver body with brass keys nd the gold - toned bell ;) thanks again !

@@timparhamsr9598 Buy another one, and copy the pieces you need, on a lathe, etc. Then you can sell the duplicate (and keep the one you're proud of restoring).

Thanks Wes, much appreciated. Patina sealing wax? I think I need some of this for my 1928 York 6/4 raw brass tuba that is just about a uniform brown. Would you mind sharing the product? Thanks again for showing your tool cart. I like how the mini-Z has found a home on it...

You can use any wax like a carnauba wax, I use the wax I showed in a video about preserving tools. Johnson. I just really like it.

Hello, I follow your interesting videos and this is the one I needed to silver the drain of the 2nd piston of my trumpet, could you please tell me what materials you use and what voltage, how long is necessary to obtain the silver result that can be seen in the video? thanks for sharing your knowledge

Plating is pretty easy/inexpensive to get into, as far as hobbies go. Just start with basic research, to see if you like it.
