will never happen , in oxford county , homeless get 300$ a month to try and get their life together meanwhile the ow worker they meet makes 100k a year , and theres 20 workers , ,8 supers, 4 directors and 1 head director . The money goes to the administration of the programs not the people who could use it to get off the streets or the shelters !

The Mayor says in the video: "$355K". She also proclaims "this is not from taxpayers money, but from a "fund" as well as "third party groups" that will pay the bill... And i'm sure that they had a choice in this, and that this money surely couldn't be used for a better cause for the citizens of the city they feign to represent. Ill conceived. I am surprised that deep the thinkers at City Hall would choose a Ghanaian mythical name for Toronto's iconic core downtown public space. I admire and respect the Ghanaian community but I don't think this is appropriate for this space. It smacks of tokenism and virtue signaling. It's dismissive of the feelings of the founding communities of Toronto. Sankofa - as interesting as its significance is - has little meaningful connection to the square's creation or the City of Toronto's history.

@sola4393 Yonge-Dundas Sq is a public open space/ public square. No, there was no public vote, it was City Council that decided to do this and what name to use. This was based on a petition. Sankofa has no meaning in Canada.

When I first came to Canada and I saw Terry Fox running across Canada to raise money I straight out sobbed in front of the tv because my aunt died from brain cancer and she suffered in agony because of the lack of awareness. My grand parents all died in Toronto having lived all there lives there my parents born and raised in Toronto and as for me I watched the CN tower go up from my grade school window. Now my address is Fort McMurray Alberta. I didn’t sign this petition but that lady is saying that if I had my signature shouldn’t be welcome. Shame on the state of mindset of these so called community leaders. Next why was the name changed? Renaming everything to appease what I consider to be people that truly do not have standing as a historical Toronto resident. Section 37 funds are tax dollars collected through the Community Benefits Charge levied against developers. These are tax dollars. The residents pay these taxes through the developers of their residences. The developers didn’t just eat this money it was passed on into the cost of your home. The city of Toronto doesn’t have money. Almost every cent it spends is collected through taxes.

I live downtown and entertain the idea of 'how' would that monstrosity look nicer, every time I reluctantly venture in it's direction. I imagine a park with a pond, tall grasses, flowers, a place to relax and rest the soul amidst the drain...but quickly images of drug addicts shooting up appear, and tent cities amidst the park I imagined... I miss what it once was, a book store. There were far less stabbings, shootings, concrete overheating, and ugliness that screams poorly done fake Times Square. At this point I wouldn't even mind a new condo going up in that space. It might disperse the crime and grime...and the ongoing issues with 'offensive' naming.

Section 37 fees come from home buyers not the developers pockets, when you close on a unit you pay a section 37. fee in addition to the cost of the property. Imagine making housing more unaffordable for something useless like this.

Oh. section 37 fund. So the money doesn't come from tax payers - it comes from tax payers... well, consumers, anyone who uses the businesses who will pass the cost of contributing to the section 37 fund onto the people who use their businesses. So... so in other words, it's also a bunch of tourists who are paying for it. So therefore that woman's argument that the signatures aren't from Toronto, that invalidates her argument since everyone who visits and uses those businesses are the ones paying for it, not Torontonians.

As a Vancouveritr, I refuse to call that plaza in Toronto Sankofa Square. Dundas Square it is and will always be.

The square name change feels performative. Doesn't reflect the history of the area or solve the more pressing issues in the city. This decision doesn't appear to be a priority for the well being of Torontonians...maybe delay the name change when poverty and safety are addressed first?
