Mr. Laws has many tutorial videos on KZfaq and has frequent field trips and drawing sessions in the San Francisco Bay Area (very affordable). He has created many field guides, calendars etc.....a California treasure

John Muir Laws is a gifted teacher. He has an extraordinary ability to explain and to simplify. I have the book, and "attend" his classes via youtube and highly recommend both.

I am so glad you reviewed this book. I bought it around Christmas time and it has helped me improve my understanding of drawing and given me ideas of how to set up pages. He has some KZfaq videos where he goes through some of the exercises. They are a little long, though. Thank you, Teoh, for always sharing your wonderful knowledge. I love learning the things you present. Your voice is so soothing and calming. It inspires quiet professionalism and inspiration.

Thank you, Teoh, for this wonderful review. I love this book. I have had the pleasure of attending a few of the monthly (free!) nature journaling technique workshops that JML teaches in the Bay Area. He's a super enthusiastic and wonderful teacher. There are lots of great videos of these workshops here on KZfaq. The amount of knowledge he shares freely is amazing. Lots of stuff to learn!

This is an awesome book. I'm still going through the book. So far I have learned drawing techniques that I haven't grasped before. John Muir Laws also has some interesting KZfaq videos on how to draw especially moving animals.

Beautiful book, the reader/artist can learn all about the California landscape and wild inhabitants along with the techniques the author shares. Very accurate renditions of the lay of the land in naturalist John Muir's footsteps of past centuries.

I just got this book at the library and was looking online to see if it originally came out in hardcover... And what do I find, but that my favorite art blogger has reviewed the book! Not only that, but has an affiliate link for something I was planning to buy anyway. Thanks, Teoh! My kids and I always love your art videos. I agree completely about this book. Everything is broken down to basics and the way he provides instruction really makes doing good quality drawings DOABLE, for anyone to learn step by step. It's a book we will go to over and over and worth buying.

This book looks amazing! Totally recommended it to my friend who loves nature sketching, after I watched your video.

I have this book and his one on drawing birds. Both excellent books.

Mr.law uses colored pencils often and the sketchbook is perfect for that medium...every field lab in biology that i took in college required each student to make a journal ..during this year of virtual learning wouldnt this book have been a great asset to have!!!!

I love this book. I love to follow along the exercises except the insects. I also love Irene Brady's book. Both books are very thorough in their own way! I hate picking up an instruction book and feel as if the author is holding back information. I don't get that feeling for either one of these books. Both are scientific illustrators with great blogs too.

I was an avid reader of the works of John Muir. He was also a naturalist. I have not found anything as of yet about whether John Muir Laws is Muir's descendant. I might look for that book on Amazon or see if my local library can get a copy.
