Teoscar Hernandez becomes the first Dodger to ever win the Home Run Derby
History was made Monday night as Teoscar Hernández became the first Los Angeles Dodgers player to win the Home Run Derby! The 31-year-old slugger triumphed in a nail-biting final, edging out Kansas City star Bobby Witt Jr. with a 14-13 victory.
Hernández, who signed a one-year deal with the Dodgers this winter, showcased his power alongside teammates Shohei Ohtani, Mookie Betts, and Freddie Freeman. Following in the footsteps of his friend Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Hernández became the seventh Dominican player to claim the title.
With 38,578 fans on the edge of their seats at Globe Life Field, the new Derby format added to the suspense. Despite Witt’s valiant effort, including a near-miss on his final swing, it was Hernández who walked away with the $1 million prize and Derby glory.

• Competed in his first Derby, defeating Bobby Witt
Jr., 14-13 in the Finals. Hernández is the first Dodgers
player to ever win the Derby.
• The two-time All-Star is just the second Dodgers
player to reach the Finals after Joc Pederson fell to
Todd Frazier in the Finals of the 2015 Derby.
• He is the first Dominican-born player to win the Derby
since Juan Soto in 2022. Overall, he is the ninth player
(10th occurrence) born outside of the United States
to win the Derby since 2000 and the fifth such player
(sixth occurrence) to win since 2010. Hernández joins:
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (2023); Juan Soto (2022); Yoenis
Céspedes (2013-14); Robinson Canó (2011); David
Ortiz (2010); Vladimir Guerrero (2007); Bobby Abreu
(2005); and Miguel Tejada (2004).
• Hernández's 28 homers of at leat 425 feet were the
most of any Derby competitor.
• His 19 home runs in the opening round were: 466;
436; 436; 405; 448; 430; 401; 430; 402; 427; 418; 431;
440; 449; 383; 422; 448; 456; and 434.
• His 14 homers in the semi-finals were: 395; 454; 437;
438; 407; 435; 411; 443; 414; 446; 422; 421; 384; and
413.
• His two homers in the semi-final swing-off were: 420;
and 456.
• His 14 home runs in the finals traveled: 424; 424; 447;
433; 408; 427; 454; 441; 438; 416; 449; 405; and 449.
• Overall, Teoscar totaled a Derby-best 20,948 feet in
home run distance, averaging 428 per homer. His
longest home run on the evening was 466 feet and
his hardest hit ball was 111 mph.
• Became 11th player in Dodgers history (14th
appearance) to compete in the event. The 14
appearances by Dodgers in the Derby are tied for the
most NL teams behind Chicago (14) and Colorado
(14).
• Other Dodgers to slug their way through the Derby
include Hall of Famer Mike Piazza (1993-94); Raul
Mondesi (1995); Hee-Seop Choi (2005); Matt Kemp
(2011-12); Yasiel Puig (2014); Joc Pederson (2015 and
2019); Corey Seager (2016); Cody Bellinger (2017);
Max Muncy (2018); and Mookie Betts (2023).
Bobby Witt Jr. • Competed in his first Derby, falling to Teoscar
Hernández in the Finals, 14-13. Became the first Royals
player to ever reach the Derby Finals.
• Became just the fourth shortstop to appear in the
Finals, joining Hall of Famer Cal Ripken Jr. (1991) and
Miguel Tejada (2004), who both won, and Hanley
Ramirez (2010), who lost to Hall of Famer David Ortiz.
• His 50 homers were the most of any competitor.
• Advanced to the finals after beating José Ramírez, 17-
12, in the semi-finals to become the first Royals player
to ever reach the Derby Finals.
• His 20 home runs in the opening round were: 406;
410; 385; 412; 424; 405; 414; 442; 410; 394; 359; 428;
387; 394; 413; 426; 430; 439; 385; and 420.
• His 17 home runs in the semi-finals were: 445; 352;
399; 382; 400; 419; 445; 418; 395; 430; 383; 394; 454;
403; 393; 401; and 412.
• His 13 home runs in the Finals were: 395; 457; 377;
413; 386; 385; 424; 411; 370; 409; 416; 450; and 427.
• Overall, Bobby Jr. totaled 20,428 feet in home run
distance, averaging 409 per homer. His longest home
run on the evening was 457 feet and his hardest hit
ball was 111 mph.
• Witt Jr. is the fifth Royals player to participate in the
Derby, joining Bo Jackson (1989), Danny Tartabull
(1991), Mike Moustakas (2017) and his current
teammate Salvador Perez (2021).
• After winning the 2018 High Schol Home Run Derby
in Washington D.C. at the 89th All-Star Game, Witt Jr.
became the first to participate in both Derbys.
