Somebody looking like somebody doesn’t mean they’re imitating them. There’s somebody in this world that everybody looks like.

Yeah but... when he first came out he was clearly seen as an imitation of The Purple One...

@@majr6852 Because back then all the black guys that mattered to the masses were Prince and MJ (and a little Lionel Richie). There was a limited view of what black artists could be. TTD was his own person, a true individual. Only similarities between him and Prince were their skin complexions and the motorcycles they rode.

He was a bigger MJ fan than Prince.. He said he heard I want you back and that was it for him. He went to Princes house before his show in Minneapolis at First Avenue

I remember when this and Wishing Well (his #1 hit) came out. I always liked "Sign Your Name" better, slow and incredibly soulful.

TTD was huge in 1988, he was right up there as a peer of MJ, Prince, GM etc and nobody thought he was immitating anybody. He dropped out of the game and changed his name soon after, which has affected how he is now perceived, but trust me, he was a top drawer talent.

Prince was a big influence on a lot of artist back in the 80’s, you either wanted to be like Micheal Jackson or Prince. Terrance Trent Darby did have some Prince mannerisms but also MJ because both were influenced by James Brown and it showed. But the thing with Micheal was that there would never be another Micheal, there was only one who could dance and sing like him, but the thing with Prince , you could imitate Prince’s look, mannerisms , his music , or his band , but you had to sing, dance , play guitar and all of the other instruments in the studio and on the stage. So reallly , like MJ, there will never be another Prince. TTD still should have been a big star …

Terence Trent D'Arby is such an underrated artist. He is an amazing singer/songwriter! His debut album called "Introducing The Hardline According to Terence Trent D'Arby" is amazing. He changed his name to Sananda Maitreya which did nothing for his career but he still performs under that name and has some amazing songs, check out his songs, "Dance Little Sister", "If You Let Me Stay", "Let Her Down Easy", "Delicate", and more!! He did not imitate Prince but he, like Prince, was a huge James Brown fan. So if anything, they both imitated James Brown a little. But he had his own individual style and is a very talented guy who left the music business at the height of his career because he disagreed w/the corruptness of it all.💖💖

Being someone who grew up down the road from Paisley Park-I don’t see the D’arby/Prince at all. What I do remember about Terence is seeing him on MTV when I was 15! He told Mark Goodman (MTV VJ), “ I have sex as much as I wash my hair, and I wash my hair a lot.” 😂

This is the only song I like by this artist! It's pretty deep and emotional! 😮 And that can be pretty frightening! Similar to being on the sunken place from the 2017 movie 🍿🎥 Get Out! Love and music can be so powerful and enigmatic! Later and take care!
