In this video I take two rifles to the range both chambered in 30-06 to see which bullets it likes. I'm shooting Federal Terminal Ascent and Norma Bondstrike ammo. Hope you enjoy the video!

Had a Kimber Mountain rifle in 270 Win I spent lots of money on. No matter what ammo I shot through it it wouldn't group small than 1.7 inches. Picked up a used Savage Model 110 in 270 winchester that was in poor shape on the outside but the bore was great for less than 300 clams. The Savage shot almost everything sub MOA. Sometimes we don't pick the rifle... It picks us. Lets say that Kimber is going to a new owner and my beat up ugly cheap Savage pawn shop find is taking its place.

Kimber is over rated having collected rifles for 60+ years the Kimber rifles and pistols are trying to live off their reputation which isn’t getting any better! I have owned many of their rifles and pistols and their fit and finish is a joke and their quality is too! Called their customer service on a brand new pistol that I was shooting brand new premium ammo and it kept jamming over and over! Their service rep accused me of doing something to have caused it and said it wasn’t covered! I took it to a top gunsmith and he had it fixed in an hour and said he gets this all the time from Kimber! Be warned😳

A little trick you can try if your factory ammo is NOT crimped - I took some Norma factory ammo that was not shooting well in my Tikka 308. Tried seating the bullet slightly deeper and WOW, 0.3s on 3 different days, 3 shot groups. So, I took all 5 boxes of the ammo I had on hand, all same LOT #, and seated all the bullets a little deeper, another 15 thousandths. Did the trick

I’ve got four Winchester models 70’s and everyone of them is a tack driver. The first thing I would do is to check and make sure all of the screws are tight. Three of the model 70’s are made in Portugal and one is made in the good old USA. I see no drop off in quality or performance.

The model 70 is a really good rifle. Float your barrel, bed your stock, muzzle break it, and lighten your trigger!!! You will shoot much better groups. And later on move to hand loading as to have each round exact. It takes several things for precision!! Especially at long distances. But its more the rifle needing work than the ammo. But until you reload you wont be cutting bullet holes often.

I was excited to see this video as these were the two loads that I was planning to run for my .308 win Ridgeline. I had the inverse experience. Bondstrike wouldn't group below 1.4" moa, while the terminal ascent held right at .75 moa. My rifle normally eats Sig match 168 gfain ammo and prints .5 moa or a tad lower, but I wanted to go as heavy for caliber without sacrificing much accuracy. I wanted to love the Bondstrike as I wanted to go as heavy for caliber as possible with good accuracy but the TA won out. Thanks for the content!

Lightweight rifles can sometimes shoot much better if you're holding the foreend tightly when you shoot, so it doesn't flick up in the air under recoil. If you just passively rest it across a sandbag they can group much worse.

@@Hondayo77 That is simply not true if we're only talking about group sizes in an ammo test. I own two ( and have owned several more) that make nice tight one hole groups at 100 yards when loaded properly. However, I'll be the first to admit, a Sako or Tikka can't be beat overall for nearly any hunting purpose. My comment was related to his saying the model 70 wasn't very accurate. Any competent hand loader could have that rifle performing well in an afternoon, provided there isn't a defect in the rifle.

I would say check the bedding and the stock barrel inlet on that Model 70. Quality control on production Model 70’s of late I pretty pathetic. I just had a client bring in a new, never shot Model 70 Safari Express in .375 H&H for a complete facelift, ie polish, engraving, re stock with exhibition grade Bastogne walnut and rust blue. The thing out of the box is atrocious and as ugly as a mud fence. It’ll shoot a 3 shot one hole group a 50 yards when I’m done with it…guaranteed!

Savage and Tikka rifles have a proven accuracy reputation. However I love the look and feel of the Mod 70 Featherweight but I’ve found accuracy can be a hit n miss kinda thing. The older Mod 70 Ultimate Shadows were real tack drivers. I had experience with a couple of 270wsm’s, two 300wsm’s and a 325wsm. All will shoot 2-3 or more brands of ammo at 1” or 1.2”. I’ve never seen one, yet, shoot a 2” group or more. They are great rifles and I often wonder why Win quit making them.

The random flyer is pretty common with factory loads using copper or hybrid bullets like the Ascent, in my experience. By hybrid I mean that the Ascent is approx. a bonded bullet regarding the ogive and a copper bullet regarding the shank. Very few of these commercial loads can do 1 MOA or better with some rifles. This is not good for 2 reasons: 1) the flyer can be way off the expected impact point already at 100 yards where it can be acceptable but not for longer range; 2) they are expensive for what they offer. So I only consider these bullets for reloading. The Norma BondStrike on the other end might not be ideal in general as well (because of the extreme shape and length of the bullet) but at least it only results in a more uniform and usable 1.25-1.5 MOA, in the worst case. 1 MOA or better is far more common even with cheap rifles. Obviously to use it as intended (i.e. long range hunting load) it needs to shoot better than 1 MOA, IMHO.

I really like that terminal ascent bullet. With factory loads my waypoint 2020 CF 308 was less accurate than you 06(2.6 to 3 in 5 shot groups). My 270 was Ok but a lot better with other options. My 6.5CR shoots really well with terminal ascent bullets.
