In this video, I find a bike rack for my Land Rover Discovery 4. This isn't so straightforward because of the split tailgate. I also fit a spare wheel carrier to the back. I want to be able to leave the bike rack on all the time, so it was important to find one that was practical and looks good. The combination of the Terrafirma Spare Wheel Carrier and the Hollywood 1 Bike Rack seems to work really well.

Having tested the spare wheel carrier for a few weeks now, I have noticed that the reversing sensors sometimes don't pick up on the spare wheel at all, and other times, they do. So it's a bit hit and miss when the wheel is attached. When no wheel is attached, the reversing sensors work great. When the wheel is attached, it's 50/50, and when the bike is attached, the reversing sensors are definitely obstructed. But it's not a problem. I just cancel the beep with the parking sensor button.

I've been using it for about a year now and the reversing sensor works all the time even when the wheel is on. Not sure what changed, but it just seemed to settle in.

I recently installed one on my LR4- it’s great and very attractive! I got enough bolts, nuts and washers to install four in the tire plate, your kit was short. I installed mine to fit my new spare 275 75R 18 on Terra Firm 18 steel wheels with Proud Rhino lift rods for a 2 1/2 inch lift

@@inhistracks I came across this video with a really neat custom edition to a similar rear wheel carrier like yours. With a little additional steel work he's added a tow bar hook so you can hang a Thule or similar toe bar mounted bike rack which I think looks really neat - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/obxol8qSuqelgKc.html

Thank you. I need to do an update video on it soon because I'm starting to notice rust spots on the gas piston and it's a lot stiffer than when I first fit it.

Eddie from Terrafirma just got in touch after watching the video. He said that the powder coating on the wheel bolts is supposed to be done in such a way so that the wheel nuts can still thread directly on top of it. They tested a couple of models they had in their factory and the wheel nuts screwed on with no issues. So I was probably just unlucky. They also said that the swing arm usually does come with 4 nuts, bolts and washers to attach the bracket to the swing arm, so that shouldn't be a problem either.
@muntenated
@muntenated Жыл бұрын
Powder coating over any section of usable thread is fouling. Saying that threading a nut over it shouldn't be a problem does not excuse the fact that it WAS a problem for you. Also, normally supplied with 4 nuts and bolts so shoulldn't be a problem. Same response. The failure of simple quality control checks and balances, and the response given does not inspire confidence in the product for me. TerraFirma, have a word with yourselves.

@@muntenated you make a good point. While I do love the swing arm, it wouldn't have taken much extra effort on their part to avoid these issues.

Now I'm about yo step up my lr3 with some upgrades not made for the lr3 I just bought a defender side ladder and side storage box to go on passenger side I saw that a few people done this I also have front runner rack I will have to move to the side and I will need to drill 2 holes on each side and in stall insert nut and I hate to do it and 2 holes on both side of the quarter panel with insert nuts but once done it look really cool and different from all the other lr3/lr4 if I had a you tube channel it be great content I also bought a set of Molle panels for third row windows on inside to help in hiding the mounted ladder and storage box I'm still up in the air if I ever buy a roof top tent because of all the room you have to sleep in lr3 when all the seat are down , but if I do I like to get a ikamper hard shell but only tell will tell my final build upgrades and I thought of pulling a small tear drop trailer also .....

Well if you do set up your own KZfaq channel, let me know. I'd like to see your work. All it takes is a Go Pro and a small rode mic and you're away. I know what you mean about the rooftop tent. I'm sometimes tempted, but they are heavy bits of kit and that's a lot of bulk to have on the roof rack when I also use the car for daily commutes. The beauty of the LR3/4 is the space inside. So for now, I'll stick to sleeping in there. Good luck with your build!

Hi there, seems to be one good option. What do you think, would it work on a damaged flat tire? Imagine, you go overlanding and need to change your damaged tire, does the bike rack still work? Greets from Germany, cool car😊

I with you had attempted to do the installation or recorded the installation on the terrafirma carrier, I own one I just installed it but my mistakes came when installing the bumper back on lr3 because I drilled the hole where the carrier gose in that was good but the right corner is about 1/4 off I now now it was best to install bumper the drill out the hole where the carrier gose in , now I will attempt to take out carrier and try to attach the corner bumper back in place and drill a much bigger hole so the carrier go back in place and nothing instructions that say how the carrier is secured to land rover from popping out so I quess the black round metal with center hole is what is used to secured the carrier other than these complaints it was a very easy installation and you could have done the work as long as you has a few tools , but the terrafirma instructions suck in my opinion, I try to learn from the mistakes people post in their viedos like when you spoke about the front runner roof rack bolts , my lr3 still work in progress, but you could have set the tone by if you recorded the installation of the terrafirma carrier nobody has a well detailed installation of the carrier one other person but he left out many key factors for a good installation I own the Yakima EXO Swing Away Storage System w/ 2 Enclosed Cargo Carriers - 2" Hitches , has many nice accessories to build on and a dull bike carrier check it out a bit pricey Nice viedo

Hi James. Thanks for the message. Yes I would have preferred it if Avenger 4X4 were able to video the install, but they are super busy and it is a big ask to record an install as it makes the job quite a bit longer. They did take some photos and I'm sure they'd agree that the instructions could be better.

Hey mate👋 I’m just wondering if you got two choices would you pick a defender with Puma engine or discovery 4? Thanks in advance.
@inhistracks
@inhistracks 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Jackson. I'm almost certainly not qualified to answer that question with any authority, as I haven't travelled in, or driven a Defender with the more upgraded Puma engine and interior layout. I understand these more modern Defenders make motorway journeys much more pleasant and the Aircon and interiors are better too. But I imagine they are still a long way from the comforts, speed and on-road performance of a Discovery 4. Having said that, the Defender is likely to be better off road if you are a good off-road driver. If you have a good road car for day to day driving and you also want a pure breed off-road legend, then the Defender is probably the way to go. If you wil be using this vehicle for every day living as well as your adventures, then personally I would go for the Discovery. People underestimate just how good the Discoveries are off-road. In the Army, we used to thrash the Defenders and the Discoveries on some good challenging terrain and both cars performed great. The difference is, the Discovery felt like you were driving a Jaguar, whereas the Defenders (all military Defenders are very old), felt like you were driving a tractor. The Discoveries were also great when the drivers were not confident off-road, whereas the Defenders were far less forgiving. The Discovery is so clever, it just figures it all out for you. As much as I'd love to say I do lots of off-roading in my car, the truth is, more than 99% of my driving is on road. And when I do have an off road adventure, the Discovery is more than capable enough to handle it. If you live on a farm, or you are doing some hard core off-road adventures, and you want the uncompromising kudos of a vehicle that belongs in the wild, get the Defender. Otherwise, enjoy the comfort, speed and advanced technology of a Discovery.

No worries thanks for your reply. I saw lot of videos every time they need to do some major work on the discovery 4 they have to lift the body up and separate from the chassis. That looks scary for me. Anyways so far do you face any major problems and would you recommend people to get one? And what’s the advice before we buy one any particular things to check before buying it ? Thanks in advance would like to hear from you soon.
@inhistracks
@inhistracks 2 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the delay. I was away for a few days. Yeah I agree about the body being a big concern. It basically means any repair requiring the body off is going to cost at least £2.5k before you even start! I had a horrible rumbling when I first bought it. God knows what it was. A gearbox specialist drove it for several hundred miles trying to recreate the symptoms but it only happened when I drove it on 2 occasions and never happened again. Likely that was something to do with the gearbox and at some point that might happen again. If it does, that will probably be a body off job too. The problem is, these cars are so unpredictable. But I once tried to look for a more practical car and I just couldn't do it. I bloody love these cars. So I'd rather accept that I may have some awful bill to pay at some point. The only other thing I can think of is the Turbo. If the previous owner hasn't given it a good hard drive for a long time, the turbos can get a bit sticky. Tootling around towns and not accelerating hard means the second turbo doesn't need to kick in... So I've been told. So make sure there aren't any issues with that before you buy it, or you'll be in limp mode and if you're lucky, it will be a couple of hundred pounds for a new hose, or several thousand to take the body off and replace both turbos!

Legally, don't you need a light bar and extra number plate when you have a bike on the rack? Your rear lights and your number plate are not clearly visible!
@inhistracks
@inhistracks 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I'd say a light bar and plate would be the safest bet. Not 100% sure what the legal requirements are, but the lights are very visible even with the bike on. I tested them at night and during the day and all the lights show through really well. You can also see that in my next video which I'll publish soon. But despite that, I still think your suggestion is the right way to go and I'll get one sorted ASAP. Thank you
