I worked in the Tornado Project Office at Warton. I remember the main computer was a 32k unit. Massive upgrade to 64k a few years later. Moore's Law. Great to hear Mr Nichol speak. George McCauley, Chief Nav in Flight Ops told me this story. On trials with Tornado, flying through the Welsh valleys, with TRN active, 400+ knots, hands off. Snow flying and the looking out of his window at the red reflection of his anti collision beacon on the mountain walls.. Amazing technology, proud to be part of it.

I authored a majority of the last RKT (Retrofit kit) at TI for the MRCA Dual mode GM/TFR RADAR LRU 1 (Processor/Computer) Test Set that used a TI 960B minicomputer back in the day (late 80's) before we turned over all design authority to Panavia ... before that was doing engineering production support for RADAR LRU 2 (GMR TWT-based transmitter) and also LRU 7 (TFR Magnetron-based transmitter).

John Nichols' book is one of those books you cannot put down until you have finished the last page. Highly recommended.

These guys are heroes, not a bloody footballer...these guys put their lives on the line to defend our country and war fighting.

I vividly remember when the news showed John Nichol and John Peters being paraded on Iraqi TV. And a US pilot too. Deeply shocking at the time and still shocking. One of those 'news events' I will never forget.

Exceptional. All aircrew interviews contain fascinating insights, but this really conveys the happiness we missed out on - and makes us feel our income tax found an appreciative recipient!

I can now understand why they only flew down to 200 feet, it was to avoid having their large brass testicles scraping on the desert sands. Mad respect to you, and R.I.P. to your missing crews. Bless 'em All

I remember seeing a news clip from the gulf war where a Tornado missed a sand dune by less than 10 feet. Not sure if it was a radar problem or a really confident pilot.

Very confident pilot who had an even more confident nav in the back, all done by seat of pants as the rad alt would unlock below 100 feet then read anything other than the actual height above ground.
