TerraMaster wanted me to have a look at this F2-220 Dual tray NAS unit,, well we do just that, and we start by taking it apart to see if they made a good product :-) I might have neglected to mention that to TerraMaster.

My PlayHouse is a channel where i will show, what i am working on. I have this house, it is 168 Square Meters / 1808.3ft² and it is full, of half-finished projects.
I love working with heating, insulation, Servers, computers, Datacenter, green power, alternative energy, solar, wind and more. It all costs, but I'm trying to get the most out of my money, and my time.

The motherboard in this unit reminds me of how "CB" citizen band radios were once made. The manufacturers would make a single board with all the bells and whistles in place but when installed in the final model, those extra features were not accessible because the case and or user interface was not made to support them. In a higher priced model, those features would then be accessible with a different user interface. It appears to me this TerraMaster motherboard is probably a one size fits all models but limits accessibility like the VGA interface (IPMI?), to more expensive variations. Just my thoughts on that matter. The on board USB connector for the OS on the TerraMaster is just like the connector on my Supermicro FreeNAS server. As you commented, maybe this board can accommodate different operating systems for NAS or linux. That can really make it more user flexible and fun to use. This box has a nice price point too. Love all that aluminum. Great Video as usual! Can't wait until I see the test run. Happy New Year!!! too.

You will enjoy tinkering with that dave hjorth :-D Ahh so its a mini personal server, thats very cute :-D, storage with brains. I imagine it would be running on something like linux or similar. It does seem to have a lot of extra sockets/functions, the usb o.s i would think has configuration files and drivers, a different usb stick for each version.

I won a Synology DS916+ NAS from Tweaktown. Seems like a good unit, only thing I thought was sort of stupid is this unit can have 4 or 8GB or RAM. I would have hoped they would put an access panel in you throw in a RAM stick DIMM so-DIMM, etc and it's upgraded. Apparently there is no interest int that though. I originally thought 8GB RAM for a NAS what on earth would you need that for. Then I saw all the apps, servers it has and it makes sense. You could almost run an entire SMB network off a simple Synology NAS. Mine only has 4GB RAM, I only had 400GB SATA HDD available so used 4 of those with Synology Hybrid RAID. It will take 4 10TB HDD if you add the expander then it becomes like 12X10TB HDD. This also has DUAL NICs so it can do proxy server, VPN, etc.

I built a HP microserver g8 as a NAS. It is quite cheap (especially considering it is "as close" to a server as you may get elsewhere) and has a lot of power on it. I swapped the g1610t for an i3 3220t which has more power. The only problem I see is that drives are not hot-swappable. I guess you can just search for another controller though, but I think considering the advantages it is not such a drawback.

@guillermo.gonzalez
@guillermo.gonzalez 7 жыл бұрын
André Lopes not really. I believe it did in the past when ahci mode was used but it was fixed on a bios update. it is "a server" so it may be louder than other solutions but I haven't noticed anything special on normal use. I'm not super picky about noise though
@intrax2tv

It takes a lot more watts, so it's not really cheap. You pay through the electicity bill, i3 takes at least 35 watts. Not a smart choice !

Well the AMD chip draws a lot more power - I think at least 75 watts - so that would cost a bit to leave it running 24/7. These small Intel chips require very little power - 15 watts at most - and only need a small heatsink. Also what could you do with a sound card in a server? :P

Hi, If they had to put such a big and ugly label on there on how to insert the HDD's, they clearly did something wrong in the mechanical design. How hard should it be to insert a HDD in a hot swap bay... To determine whether a USB port is a USB 2 or 3 port, the color is indeed not always a guarantee. Although it is still no guarantee, I always try to see the five small copper pads in the front of the blue plastic. If they are not there it is at most USB2, if they are there it could be USB3. The HDDs connect to just a riser card. I highly doubt that's PCIe because there is no controller IC visible on the riser card. I think they just used the PCIe 4x connector because it was found to be cheaper than other options and suitable for high speed interfaces. So I wouldn't put any PCIe card in there. F_PANEL probably stands for 'Front panel'. So probable some buttons/LEDs or USB. Since it is a 10 pin double row header with one corner pin missing it is probably 2x USB. Also, I really don't like the USB stick inside. Yes, for a tweaker, it allows you to try to run e.g. linux very easily. But, what if it gets loose during transport to a customer who is not going to open it? eMMC would be better. Although a USB stick which is accessible from the rear and locks in using e.g. a screw would be nice for hobbyists.
