Vulture populations across the world are under threat. There are several reasons for their decline - faster than that of all other birds - but chief among them is poisoning by humans. In fact, of the 23 vulture species on the planet, 12 are endangered or critically endangered. But vultures are scavengers, and an essential part of a functioning ecosystem. Their decline can have a huge impact on the environment in ways that might surprise you. Learn how vultures safeguard our health - and what needs to be done to save them.

🤓 Fun fact: Vultures are known for vomiting to speedily reduce their weight, particularly when faced with a predator, in order to be able to take-off more efficiently. The practice also has the added benefit of distracting the creature causing the threat, since the chances are that they won't want to look at, or smell, a pile of freshly regurgitated (and often rancid) carrion.

I actually met a vulture once. Was walking my dogs and there was a Vulture in the middle of the neighborhood street eating some roadkill squirrel. Every time a car came, it waddled to the sidewalk, let the car pass, then went back to the carcass (instead of just picking up the carcass but hey, it does what it does). When my dogs barked at it, it just gave us a curious look before going back to eating. A polite and fearless thing, if not a bit behind in critical thinking regarding how to eat with minimal waddling.

Awe that’s adorable! Vultures have flat feet and blunted talons, so most of them are unable to grip or carry things with their feet; this is likely why the vulture didn’t move the carcass out of the road.

@@Beesahdosomink while I don't disagree with you, I think you're forgetting the most scummy people in the whole scenario. The people who buy ivory. You rightly mentioned poaches are trying to put food on the table. Highlighting poverty being the problem. Well traditional medicine is usually caused these days through lack of education, quite often caused by poverty. Also one reason people resort to it is because it is a lot cheaper to buy in a lot of underprivileged countries. Again poverty being the cause. Ivory is bought by rich degenerates. These people should be taken to the place where the animal is poached from, tried to a tree stump, and give a little something back to the animals. All their wealth should be donated to the communities where the poachers families live. But poaches continue this trade while knowing what they are doing, and ignoring the fact that once they finish off the last animal they are screwed. Where they get really scummy is when they poison the carcass.

My grandma had told me stories about how vultures used to be in large numbers and how they snatched food from your hands especially in villages but now not a single vulture can be seen.

I'm pretty sure that's a consequence of the reduction of local wildlife as cities expand and countries become increasingly urbanized, reducing the territory and foraging space they use and forcing them to move elsewhere or otherwise reduce their numbers until they are more manageable for the reduced space. Of course there's also what the video discusses in the 3rd world where poison tends to drastically reduce their numbers

When I was a child I use to see vultures and other birds near my house but now big birds are very rare in my region due to excessive housing and deforestation, hope we could do better in coming days.

No, @akshay it dose seems to be getting better. In recent times our government have introduced vulture protection programme where certain drugs are banned for animal use but I didn't see any changes in my region. Maybe due to unorganized housing and destruction of natural resources(small rivers, forest and ponds), I think I will not be seeing diversity again. Though vulture population have been drastically improved in Nepal 2014 and on. But it is not only about vulture or other animal species we humans must find a way to co-exists with all living beings in our locality.

I have always loved vultures. When i was a kid i read a small book about Condors. Since then i find Condors and vultures amazing animals, they are huge, travel a lot, they are beautiful and majestic. People admire eagles and other birds, but i truly think Condors and vultures are the king of birds.

Fun fact: California Condors were once found all across North America, from the Atlantic to Pacific coasts. When most of the large animals went extinct or became rare, the Condors in California survived by adapting to eat whale carcasses. I wouldn’t mind having herds of Bison and Elk and flocks of California Condors here in my area. I hope other people think the same, and these beautiful birds can be reintroduced.

Hopefully, California condors will one day be able to return to more of their historic range. They can travel pretty far, so it may be possible at some point in the future.

I never got the impression vultures had a bad rep here in Spain. I love to see them soar through the sky. The population has been steadily growing for the last 20 years and right now we're one of the world leaders in vulture repopulation ;)

The easiest thing you can do is to cut out cow flesh from your diet. As you heard from the video, vultures are mainly poisoned by cattle antibiotics. Stop supporting the animal agriculture industry with your money, and you can indirectly help vulture populations replenish.

Seeing Black Vultures hanging out at the same pool as I was was a highlight of my trip to Mexico. Literally feet away from me- so cool! Such big, fabulous, gorgeous birds!

@@lenafromterramater3690 I was really surprised to see them there, especially so close! Their size is very impressive- hard to believe other vulture species get even bigger. I'm sure this video will help more people appreciate vultures- thanks for that! They need all the help they can get with their reputation. 🤗 I had a ton of amazing animal encounters on that trip, many of which were on tours tailored towards that. Not the vultures, though; they literally came to me! Lol 😊 The resort was covered in birds and lizards; perfect place for a wildlife nut like me. 😄 My favourite tour was their "Crocs and Turtles" tour, where I got to be within touching distance of wild crocodiles (my long-time favourite animals)! They took us to this little island nature preserve where they have a crocodile breeding&release program, and also house confiscated illegal exotic pets, including a Spider Monkey, which I got to interact with through the bars (they allowed it briefly for enrichment for her). So incredibly sad to see it captive like that, though, the poor thing, just because someone selfishly- and wrongly- thought it would be a good pet. The illegal pet trade is so infuriating! 😠 Anyway, before I got sidetracked, I brought up the island to mention that there were some wild grouse-like birds there. They would run around your feet (with the staffs' chickens lol) trying to find any crumbs you may have dropped, so I guess I had a lot of good luck with wild birds coming up really close! 😁💚

Those are Andean condors, the largest species of vulture, among the largest extant flying birds, and the largest living birds of prey! They have near 11 ft wingspans and are gorgeous, especially in flight! Releasing any vulture back into the wild is an awe-inspiring experience, but with Andean condors, it’s almost magical.

Wow!! Vultures are unique animals whose importance in the ecosystem are highly underrated. Until we understand how important every living creatures are, we may not last too long. Biodiversity is crucial. Ecosystem needs to be balanced.

And any little bit of sympathy I had for poachers just went right out the window. I had no idea Old World vultures were in such trouble. At least the turkey and black vultures here in the US are in good shape. There are huge numbers in my area, and I see several of them every day.

@@lenafromterramater3690 Northwest Georgia. Yeah, it isn't uncommon to see dozens of vultures at a time circling around, piling onto roadkill, or resting in trees. I kind of take them for granted, I guess; this video definitely increased my appreciation for them.

I've always seen Vultures are cool animals. They can sore for hours without flapping, they can travel island to island. Best part is that they can almost Anything! If there was an option to turn into an animal, I'd become a Vulture, probably the Bearded vulture or the Andes Condor. It's silly but they're such amazing animals. I plan on getting a vulture so that the neighbourhood kids and adults could interact and understand Vultures.

I must say, I always thought of vultures as "dirty" and their unique appearance, especially the bald head, doesn't exactly look trustworthy (it doesn't help that in children's cartoons they are always portrayed as such, lol) I knew they were kind of important, but I didn't know they were THIS vital to the ecosystem. I'm glad I know better now! Thanks for the great video

I see vultures all the time around my town, especially by my house. I live near a cow pasture, so it makes sense I guess. It’s always really cool seeing them, they’re very pretty and impressive birds.

One thing is vile of all is those evil poachers who illegalily kill poor animals and poisoning them resulting vultures getting posioned in the process. I wish all poachers and soon to become one be locked up for the rest of their days, this is so inhumane and they are lower than goblins to be honest at what they do to the poor animals that are endangered.

I've never had an image problem with vultures. Even as a child I used to understand that they were keystone species even though I didn't know the word then. But what can I say? People are stupid... They never use their head and they just kill, kill, kill..
