For anyone who makes statements like "this wasn't so complicated" or the voicings are easy to play is missing the real talent here. His improvisational skills is what we all should praise. Sure many of us musicans could get a transcription and play tunes the way he does but the real question is if you could mimic his paying. The real question is could you have come up with the ideas he displays in his playing?! Especially on the fly. The man is purely gifted plain and simple. He reminds me of how ppl discredit Monk's technical abilities on the piano. There's probably tons of players on KZfaq that are more technically proficient playing the piano, but this guy is truly a virtuoso in his ability to come up with these type of solos. I have never heard anyone perform Autumn Leaves like this

Sure without context yes. But Autumn leaves is almost always played in gminor or eminor and it kinda seems like he just randomly picked ebminor which is cool. Most experienced jazz pianists can play a given tune decently well in all 12 keys but to improvise with another level of sophistication in a random key is even cooler.

Terrance has a very rare skill - he plays these very complicated sequences with brilliant voicings - example, check this out: 4:17 to 5:11 -- what is he doing there? I've never heard movement like that and I've been playing jazz since 1955. Brilliant playing... "that's how it's done"...
@johnbresnik

@Tom Silver - no idea - I don't have perfect pitch so I don't know what notes he's playing. If I could see some music I could figure it out. But, just by sound alone I have no clue...
@johnbresnik

@@pete3816 - I should clarify... if I could see the music (which doesn't exist, of course) I could determine some chord names - I play by reading chord charts, not notes.

No) its not from giant steps. Some subs like Am-D7 Abm-Db7 instead of Abm so third becomes the ninth and sounds more sweet. Or instead of Ebm which is tonic he uses series of m9 chords on the notes of F7. His favorites). Not too complicated but so much lyric and nuances in his playing.

Terrance, you have an amazing gift. I heard so many different covers on Autumn Leaves but when I listen to your play, I am thinking of only wonderfull things that our life can offer. Your music, and the way you play is more just a piano play. I never used to write comments here, but this time I want to let you know, that while playing you're touching hearts of people, changing somenthing and make it pure. I wish you can ever share note sheets, or show your piano keys while playing it in order "common people" like me have a chance do something like that too:) please continue sharing your works. I am the one who is listening to you hundred of times✌🏻

My Mom played music on the piano like this, bending and improvising at will, changing keys and playfully sticking in some other tune's phrase just for a lark. The room was filled with fulsome music like Terrance does. Does wonders for the spirit. You can hear the spiritual background.

Worked out the stuff at 4:17 to 5:11. Tried to add some music theory insight, but someone has done a full transcription of this. He's playing in the key of Eb minor/Gb major. At 4:17, he plays Dsus13 (you could think of that as Cmaj7 over D), then resolves the suspension to D7. This is followed by Dbsus13 which resolves to Db7, then the next really colorful chord is Gmin7 instead of the Gbmaj7 that would typically go there. They share the same 3rd (Bb) and 7th (F) and Bb is the melody note there (common tone substitution). After that he goes directly to Bmaj7. The rest of the A section uses the conventional harmonies of the song. Will edit as I figure out more. At 4:34 there's another tritone substitution. Sounds like he's about to go to Ebmin, but, SURPRISE, he goes to Asus13 which resolves to A7. Then he plays Bbmin7-Eb7#9-Abmin7. This is a secondary Bb and Eb chords are a secondary 2-5 leading to the Abmin7. After Abmin7 he goes to Db7 then another unexpected tritone substitution, C7 instead of the Gbmaj7 that would normally go there. This leads to that very gospel rundown starting on Bmaj7. He's just playing the chords of the Gb major scale (Bmaj7-Bbmin7-Abmin7-Gbmaj7-Fmin7b5). From the Fmin7b5 we go to Bb7 then Ebmaj (this is minor 2-5-1 which unexpectedly lands on Ebmaj, this is a modal substitution). From the Ebmaj he goes to Daug (D-F#-A#) then Dbmin9-Gb7-Bsus13-B7-Bbsus13-Bb7. The walk-down from Ebmaj takes us into a secondary 2-5 (Db and Gb chords) which leads to, SURPRISE, Bsus13 instead of the diatonic Bmaj7 you're expecting. That leads to the actual dominant chord, the Bb7 which is preceded by a sus chord. This leads us to the Ebmin9 tonic chord at which point he does something very cool sounding but conceptually very simple. First the chords. Starting at about 4:52, he plays Ebmin9-Cmin9-Amin9-Gbmin9. Notice that all of the chords have the same quality (min9). This is parallelism. I think there's another term for it (something about constant structure I think), but I can't think of it. Also notice that the roots of each of these chords are a minor 3rd apart. Conceptually simple, right? Then, he plays the same Bsus13-B7-Bbsus13-Bb7 again which leads back to Ebmin9 and he does the constant-structure parallel chords again. He keeps repeating this before he goes into his ending vamp.

God _damn_ this is a classy performance. Makes you really feel it twice as much. I wasn't watching the video and when i eventually looked down at my phone to see your head bobbing in time with mine i was like "oh yeah this is good"

Prior to 1st listen: Knowing it ain’t gonna be ordinary cover, probably filled with ideas, nuances & Terrance combos 1st listen: hold on a sec, rewind that, & that chord, that run too. Holy S%$@ 2nd listen without rewind makes me shake my head, smiling like the sickest slam dunk. 3rd listen Comment: GREAT JOB! It’s well paced, each rendition of the melody & short solos are FRESH as always & KEEPS YOU wanting to GUESSING what trick is out of the sleeve next. a joy to see you attempt this masterpiece with so much ease & not having to even focus on the keyboard.

Damn you can hear how much he enjoys playing piano. He definitely threw ad-libs in there for the hell of it kinda of like a "gotcha" moment. As for the 4:52 - 5:09 or so section, that is a common chord progression you hear in electronic music, so the fact that he was easily able to move from such an experimental style to something contemporary on a whim is quite astounding. Kudos, and keep up the great work!
