I just place them where I feel. Everyone stays in my big town, mushroom guy can live in the mushroom area, and the angler can live all the way on the other side of the map so none of us have to deal with him.

another way if you dont want to memorize the preferred biomes is to look at the bestiary it will show up in the same spot where it show where mobs spawn

Mushroom: truffle

The guide and the truffle like each other, so you can place them in any biome, the same goes for the arms dealer with the nurse and the mechanic with the goblin tinkerer.

They should add larger cloud biomes so you can make houses there and make a sky town

yeah... recently I convinced myself to go with it, learn what do the npcs need for most optimal happiness combination, I figured it out which took me a whole day and did it on my world - there were some issues with bugged things but generally it was all perfect - but then I killed the wall of flesh... and half of my housings were instantly corrupted -.- so I quit
