@PuzzlePottage1390
@PuzzlePottage1390 4 ай бұрын
Everything about that final Father Ted episodes is tragic; Dermot Morgan suffered a fatal heart attack only a day after filming for it had finished. There was a scene in said episode where Morgan's character, Ted, dances next to another priest played by Irish comedian Tommy Tiernan. However, Tiernan kept messing up his lines, so Morgan had to keep reshooting the scene despite complaining about feeling pain in his heart. Tiernan would ultimately speculate that his constant mistakes meant that he was inadvertently responsible for Morgan's death. If that wasn't already depressing enough, Tiernan's character in the show was a suicidal priest, and Ted spent a significant portion of the episode trying to convince him that life was worth living.
@yeethittter1285
@yeethittter1285 4 ай бұрын
@@PuzzlePottage1390 Something extra I find rly interesting in a messed up way about that episode is that there was an alternate planned ending where Ted goes to kill himself after not being able to leave the island. It got filmed supposedly but they weren't sure whether or not to use it, and then of course when his actor died they used the happier one out of respect. It's lost media now

Whilst there are a lot of rubbish films that have been made in the UK, the UK film industry is thriving. We have: - Pinewood - Shepperton Studios - Elstree Studios - BBC Films - Aardman Animations - Studio Canal UK Maybe it would be good to look at some of the good ones made here?

Is it bad I only knew that Pinewood and Elstree Studios was home to the original British versions of The Weakest Link and Who Wants To Be a Millionaire? ...Oh, don't forget. They also filmed Big Brother there at Elstree. (Back in the Channel 4 (Except for the first two series, that was filmed in Bow, London.) and Channel 5 days.) Aardman is still producing 5-star Michelin dish type of animation though, it's like everything they made or touch, turns to gold.

Horrid Henry is actually the source of one of my favourite jokes ever in TV. In one episode, Henry is trying to write a letter to his dad's boss, and he signs it ending with "Earth, the Universe," and then he says "Huh, what comes after the Universe?" Later in school, his teacher randomly brings up this exact topic, and just when she says "So, if you've ever wondered what comes after the Universe..." and Peter (edit the threequel: it wasnt peter lol) randomly walks in saying there's a limousine thats come to take Henry away (its his dads boss), and Henry says, completely deadpan, "Great, just when you're about to learn something interesting, along comes a limousine." Its just so funny to me specifically and probably no one else on the planet lmao EDIT: This joke comes from Season 4 Episode 31, "Horrid Henry Helps Out". Thanks to @cyberz55 for saying what season it was cause the wikipedia page for episodes is vague as hell. EDIT THE SEQUEL: Here's a link to the episode in question: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bZp9arVo0M_Jqas.html. The joke is at 5:55

Are we forgetting: All Aardman films, The Cornetto Trilogy, Trainspotting, the King's Speech, Local Hero, Monty Python, Kes, 28 Days Later, Chariots of Fire, Dracula (Christopher Lee). Umm... the James Bond films? Notes on Blindness (more of an indie movie that I highly recommend) And, it's technically a tv show but had film length episodes: Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot with the excellent David Suchet. Also, I think Derry Girls massively helped redeem Ireland in the tv comedy front.

When I was 7 and living in Hong Kong in the 90s, I received a book called Stories for 7 Year Olds (or something like that). As the title indicates, it was an anthology. Specifically, an anthology of British children's stories. One of them was a Horrid Henry story about a camping trip. His family and brother are excited about the fresh air, tent, and sleeping bags while Horrid Henry hates everything. He wants cabins with power and indoor plumbing instead. I felt very seen as someone whose relationship with the outdoors was/is best described as "ambivalent." I moved back to the US about a year later and didn't hear of Horrid Henry again for over a decade. I had no idea he had such cultural cachet.

I feel extra bad for James Buckley because he was in Doctor Who quite recently. However given its quality drop off in 2018-2022 he got lumped into what is notoriously the worst episode of its 60 year history, Orphan 55. Poor bloke

I mean at least he's in a funny bad episode, that's able to live with the likes of love and monsters or fear her. I actually remember Horrid Henry as a kid, despite being from Texas. The reason I ever got to see the show was because my step brother found it on Netflix, and he absolutely loved it, probably because he saw himself in Henry were both very similar people. My parents would eventually end up banning it from the house, because he was a little demon at that age, I mean the kid tried strangling my brother because he didn’t get a longer turn on a game than him. Anyways, my parents blamed the show on his behavior.

When it comes to mrs browns boys, it's not really treated like a show in Ireland, it's more like an expression of irish pride and qualities, i like to think people see mrs brown as their own mam/gran, which is just emphasised with all the 4th wall breaks, also an episode releases every Christmas and new year so people put it on when they're together with their family. It's just a show that encourages appreciating the people around you and your local community. But it'll never top father ted though 😂

It's funny: Alfred Hitchcock, perhaps the most revered and influential film director in history, was british, but he spent almost his whole career at the United States, where he made pretty much all his most acclaimed films, and often having his films demeaned in the UK as not british enough. In fact, such criticisms are why he left Britain and went to Hollywood to begin with in 1940! Please check out the films by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, such as The Red Shoes. They made many classic amazing british films in the 40s, with colorful visuals, but were also sadly shunned by many contemporary british critics as "not british enough". British cinema was expected to be grounded, realistic. Some would say to the point of being "stuffy".
